The house was a two-story frame, and we understand was partially in sured. Mr,Shreck was absent from home At the time, assisting a neighbor to move, and hence very little could 'be . saved from the tiaines. What little IS 110 W 011 hand, , the Comm tree have thought proper to distribute amongst the sick; of whom' there arc several Very needy families. COPPEIttIEADS ROUTED.:—The election in the borough of Jersey Shore, last week, resulted in the choice of the whole Reputt limn ticket. The fridette says: There was not a full vote out, or the Republican majority would have been greater. There was considerable cutting and cress-firing, and, as usual, those who did the most work received the highest vote. Some of our Democratic friends were unable to conceal their mortification at their defeat, having confidently exported to elect at least a part of their ticket. CITIZEN AND SOLDIERS' TICKET —The following is the ticket to be voted for to-day by the Republicans of the county. Let all Republicans go to the polls anti cast their votes for this ticket, as the result of to-day will have a decided influence upon the future prosperityof the Republican party in Lancaster county : For' Delegates to Arutional Convention— Natbaniel I.lllmaker, Gen. Don't buy what you don't want. Use every hour to advantage, and study to make a leisdre hour useful. Think twice before you spend a dollar--remember you will have another to make for it. Look over your books regularly, and if you find uu error, trace it out. Should a stroke of misfortune come upon you in your busi ness, retrench, work harder, but never fly the track. Confront difficulties with un flinching perseverance, and they will dis appear at last ; though you fail in the strug gle, you will be honored; but shrink, and you will be despised. Go to the cheap store of T. 0. Bruner, Columbia, to buy your goods.. Ile always has a fine stock of gentlemen's furnishing goods on hand, which he sells very low. REPUBLICANS, ATTENTION!—One or the most important primary elections which has ever token place in any party, will be held to-day. The polls will open at the Town Hall, at, 3 o'clock this afternoon, anti remain open until 7 o'clock. It is for you, Republican voters, to say whether you will continue to be " hewers of wood," and "drawers of water," for a few ccrrapt men in Lancaster city, who have and are now running a very rickety mill, which grinds brit few gri.sts; all of which, however, are taken into the capa cious maw of the " ring"-master-i, Jack Hiestand dr, Co. Arouse, Republicans, and rebuke those who aim to be your masters. Come out in your strength, - and let no uncertain sound greet the.ears of the motley crew who will be waiting in that sombre Wilco, commonly called the granite, on North Queen street, to hear the thunder from old Columbia. E NTERTAI N M ENT Al' DZAILI ETTA.—The Marietta "Band of Hope" wilt give a grand entertainment, Sze., in that place, on Tues day evening, 10th inst., at 7 o'clock, at the Town Ball. The exercises .will consist of tableaux, dialogues, recitations, singing, etc., etc. Tickets for sale at the door. The proceeds Will be devoted to cikaritable pur poses. The exercises will be tinder the di rections of Rev. G. M. Clawaes, who is one of " nature's noblemen" amongst the "hand of hopefuls." This little Band of Rope. its it is ealled, is a temperance organization amongst die children. It has a large mem bersuip, both here and in Marietta. It is doing much good in ninny ways, and its members are growing larger and the antic stronger, Go on, little folks, in the good . work you have NO,arvpicionsly began ; fal ter not at any obstacle in ypur way, nor doubt for a moment your eventual triumph over vice and intemperance—sins that send annually to the grace inure souls than war, pestilence, or Valtillie. TArr TAN 0 tl3 a great thin 2 to mind one's ow•n business, snid a vertain philoso pher; and he was right. Au exchange re marks that it is, a great thing to let other people's brininess alone, and ibis mizeli hi implied by the maxim above quoted ; In our view there is hardly a class of pests in modern society—and they are numerous—so superlatively eontemptible as that class known as tattlers, or meddlers in other people's business. \V- don't ad mire a thief, we have no affinity for gam blers ; and have no respect for misers, brat either of these are first-class gentlemen in comparison with the inquisitive, jealous minded tattler, who goes mousing about in a garb of social respectability, poking his nose or his lingers in the affairs of his neighbors, and seizing upon every trilling circumstance that comes within wide swoop of his remorseless curiosity, for the purpose of making capital against those whose char acters he cannot, understand, because they are pure and, above impeachment. These mischief-staking busy bodies are simply an unmitigated nuisance, and should be frowned upon by alt sincere lovers of social peace and happiness. The man or woman who can find no better employ ment than tattling, had better jump into the nearest body of water and become food for tespeeMble Xe that way the finny tribe would gain a little in their com missary department, and society above water would he immensely purified. - jLTROUS.—G rand and Petit Jurors have been drawn to serve in the Court, of Qnurter Sessions, commencing on :be third Atnudn:s, in April next. As the best county paper in ponneyivintii, the SPY is entitled to the rauk.—ihatctia, Kent, Ohio. Your head is perfectly level, brother Dewey. Al R. EDITOR :—:You ask in your two last issues what has become of the "contraband whisky" that• has been seized by the Col lector. " as in almost every cage the inform er is bamboozled by frauds or forced into a settlement?" This is only the ease under the immediate jurisdiction of the Collector of the Ninth District, whose private inter ests seem to be paramount to his public duties. You ask rightly enough what has become of the two hundred bags of corn, that were loaded at Bainbridge, upon a private car belonging ton firm in Lancaster. It will be remembered by our people that these two hundred bags of corn were diseover ea to be forty barrels of corn whisky, while the car was standing on a siding at Colum bia. Now, an honest administration of the revenue law would have seized both car and cargo, and with a little zeal might have ferreted out and shut up the distilleries; and why was this not. done? The agent who was in charge of the car, and who was in the employ of the forwarding firm that owned the car, ran away and left the car and the whisky for the Government. The owners of the car would not have dared to enter a complaint before the U. S. District Court. Why is this not the case in, other districts? Why is there no difficulty in condemning and sell i ng contraband whisky, that is shipped from this district bet seized in another? Ts there an instance in this district of an informer ever receiving the moiety provid ed by the revenue laws? SQUID. Whisky and Income Frauds. MIL :—Fora long time past it has been openly asserted, and very generally believed, that great frauds have been practiced, and the Government cheated out of its dues, by the whisky distilleries; and surprise has been manifested that the Gov ernment Officials arc not more alert in de tecting those frauds and bringing the offend ers to justice. It is alleged that frequent seizures of illicit whisky have been made by informers, and the facts made known to those whose duty it was to collect the fines; but, strange to say, seldom,,,if ever any thing is done, and the guilty plikties escape with their illicit game. Somebody is cer tainly to blame; and it is refreshing to see that you have taken the bull by the horns, and published certain facts that everybody should know. You deserve the thanks of the tax-payers for your disclosures, and it is hoped that since the ball is opened, ;you will not cease until you drive the scoundrels into a court of justice. The whisky "ring" must be broken up, and it will be the duty of every good Republican to vote, this day, I against the whisky "ring" ticket; and for I the ticket selected by the soldiers and the people. Of a character with these whisky frauds is another quite as offensive to good morals, which you also bring to light, viz:—the false returns of income, made by different parties. It is lamentable that men who consider themselves equal to the best in society, make no return at all, or make only a partial return under oath; and ask people to believe they have sworn to the truth, when it is believed by all their re turns are not correct. It. has been suspect ed that possibly some of them have not been sworn when they reported no income. The present Assessor will know his duty ; and he is looked to to make every one comply with the law, and swear to his re port, true or false ; for it is passingstrange, that for the last year or two, how wonder fully the incomes of some Copperheads have fallen off. It is only necessary to let them know they are watched, and not any too neat or important to be legally called on for an honest report. W. arriages. Deaths and lifarringes are published in this paper without charge. When accompanied by commen taries, ivhether prose or poetry, five cents per line will be charged. Funeral notices ten cents per line payable in advance. On Tuesday evening, February •251,11,1%,'5, at the residence of the bride's parents, by Rev. Win. A. Sniveiy. Rector of Christ's Church, Mr. D.
