' The following ,story:•of- ri',remarkable

Weight wouidtaxthestrength of three stout
draught horses. The history of this curious
invention is - ns followS : Six years - ago Mr.
Deddrick the ;inventor, who is at- present
huttwenty-4We years of age, conceived the
- novel; idea- of constructing- a man that
should receive its vitality from a perpetual
motion 'machine. The idea - was based on
the-well -known - mechanical principle that
if a heavy weight be placed at the top of an
upright slightly inclined from a vertical,
, gravitation will tend to produce a horizontal
as well as vertical, motion. The project
was not successful. " However; by observ
ing careful)* the critiscof the failure Preserv
ing, and perfecting the man form; and by
substituting steam in place of the perpetual
motion - machine, the present success was
attained.
-" The man stands seven feet and nine
inches high, the other dimensions of the
body being correctly proportioned, making
him a second Daniel Lambert, - by which
name he is facetiously spoken of -among
the workmen., He weighs five hundred
pounds. Steam is generated in the body or
trunk "which is nothing but a three horse
power engine, like those used in our steam
tire engines. The legs which support it are
complicated ,and wonderful. The steps are
taken very naturally and quite easily. As
the body is thrown ;forward' upon the
advanced foot the other is lifted-from the
ground by a'spring and thrown forward by
the steam.' Each step or pace advances
the - body two feet, and every revolution of
the - engine produces -four paces. As the
engine is capable of making more than a
thousand revolutions in a minute, it would
get over the ground, on this-calculation, at
the rate of a little morn than a when minute.
As this would be working the legs_ fester
than would be sateen uneven ground or - on
Broad street cobble stones, it is proposed to
run the engine at the rate Of five hundred
revolutions' per minute, which would walk
the 'man at the modest speed of halfa. mile
a minute.-
"The follow -is attached.' to-a common
rockawaY - carriage, the shaftg of "which
serve to support him in a vertical position.
These shafts aro two bars of iron, fastened
in the usual manner to the front of the car
riage -and are curved so as to be joined to a
circular sustaining, bar,whicli passes around
the waist, like a girth, and ',in - whicli the

Besides these motions - , machineryhas been
arranged by-which the frgUre Can be thrown
backward - or forward from a vertical nearly
forty-five degrees. Thisle,tioiaein order to
enable itto - ascend; or descend all grades.
To tte - soles of the feet - spikes or corks -are
fixed which effectually, prevent:slipping.
The whole affair is so firmly sustained by
the shafts and has so excellent a foothold
that two men are unable to push it over, or
in any way throw it 'down. In 'order to
enable it to stop - quickly it is provided with
two appliances, one of which will, as before
stated, throw itbackward from the vertical,
while the 'other bends - the knees in a diree--

give it as nearly_as possible a likeness - to

parts as are unneccessarily 'heated will be

In milking the above chance, and discon
tinuing entirely thesale,of Mishler's Herb
Bitters in bulk, the .proprietors deem that
the people should. ,e informed "of 'the
'causes which, called forth , such action on
their part.
• In the first place, we hold,, that Misbler's
Herb Bitters is not a beverage; we never
bite:1(19(1 - dt to be used tiara beverage, but
that itia - a medicinal preparation of various
herbs, &c., compounded "upon scientific,
principles, -and in exact accordance with
the formulae of the pharmacopoeia in the
preparation of the tinctures, &c. ,
com
pound tincture of eighteen different Herbs,
cec., and, as far as possible removed, and
differing from the many so called Tonics,
Bitters,. Cordials, Stomachics, which, for
the most part, are nothing but so many dis
guised assumed by whisky, and as for the
most part composed of the major portion of
the very vilest Quality of that article, fla
vored with some strong drugs to destroy
the-nausea of the same, in order to tickle
the palate, minister to a depraved taste and
afford a plausible excuse for persons to
drink whisky under a different name.
Mishler's Herb Bitters has been sold in
bulk. In this particular it has been unfor
tunate, for it had thus been placed directly
in contact with the above mentioned, and
although its' intrinsic merit and sterling
worth has -enabled it to sustain its high
• character, yet the -people have naturally a
Certain distrust of the article when it is
found to be - classed in the same category
with a number of whisky preparations, bar
drinks, and beverages.
This is the ono great advantage against
which Mishler's Herb Bitters has to
contend, but there is still another—The
demand for it has • caused many un
principled persons, who are not content
with the profit derived in a legitimate man
ner from its sale. TO INCREASE-THEIR
'GAINS BY ADULTERATION. They will
purchase, perhaps, a barrel, and by the-ad
mixture of cheap whisky and water, in
crease the quantity, making perhaps, two,
or it may be three barrels of the counterfeit,
from a single barrel of the genuine, thus
abusing, the confidence of their •customers,
injuring their health, and •it is likely, in
many instances, inflicting serious injury
thereby, besides doing injustice to the pro
prietors and injuring the reputation of the
article.
liivention4A
This is the most - serious objection, but
there is still anotber.—Our desire to have
this preparation for sale on the shelves of
every druggist, and. country store dealer,
thus placing:it Within easy access of all
classes and every section of the country.
If the-Bitters are sold in bulk, it is retailed
principally at hotels; restaurants and tav
erns, so that druggists and merchants can
not safely, and profitably sell it to their
customers. At the hotels the Bitters is of
times fearfully adulterated ; -while when
in bottles, it is impossible to tamper with
the medicine without fear of.detection. In
hotels it must be sold as a beverage; which
is not the object of its manufacture, while
as a medicine, securely sealed in a proper
sized bottle, the Bitters can , be retailed from
the counter of every druggist and merchant
in the country.
MISTELER'S MERE BITTERS
ARE cow ONLY: SOLDIN MOTTLES.
Lot this fact ho remembered by the public,
who may consider elf ()Over preparations
sold in bulk, and:under its name as base
and worthless counterfeits.
A PART OF TO-DAY'S MAIL.
PuovroN:ccu, Nov. 23, 1567
Dn. S.'l3. Haler:wily (V, CO.
Cr;x'rs. Please send me, immediately,
in,y usual: complement of your Bitters, as
what I have on hand is going off rapidly,
and will goon he exhausted.
I have been very successful in curing
with the,Bitters a very distressing ease of
Scrofula. "The patient is a young man who
was afflicted with the disease for years.
Five bottles of the Bitters, with one of
green label, cured him entirely.
You have not recommended' your Bitters
for worms in children, but from a case that
has passed through my hands, I am satis
fied that MISHLER'S FIERR BITTERS
can be relied on as a specific in such disor,
ders. , The facts of the case are as follows:
.t~ gentleman, whose wife had been using
the Bitters; has a child of about six years
of age, who was sadly afflicted with worms
and reduced to a mere skeleton. Quite a
number of our prominent physicians pre
scribed for tho child, but without avail.
The gentleman finally concluded -to try
your_Bitters, and` commenced giving the
child a half -teaspoonful• three times per
day. On the third day of this treatment
'the Bitters caused trouble with the worms,
and the father says it fairly frightened him
to see the immense number of. worms that
passed from his little sufferer. The child
has rapidly" recovered from 'its many
months illness, and is in the enjoyment of
good health, although it is somewhat thin.
I mention these two cases to you to show
:i , ou the success that is following the intro
duction of the Bitters in the New England
States. •
Enclosed find my cheek for $l5O, amount
of Inst bill. Be - sure and send Bitters us
soon as possible.
Respectfully vours,
TREDENICK.

DEAR SIR:' While working at Norris'
Locomotive Works, two years ago, I was
injured by a heavy frame, felling on my
right band, which was so injured as to be
rendered entirely useless, the wrist was as it
were bent—completely bent. I went to sev
eral physicians, who told me that "I could
never recover the use of the hand. One of
them wanted to remove some of the bones
of the wrist, but I did not consent. I was
unable to work for over a year, and having
a family, my former earnings were rapidly
disappearing ; I found that it was useless
for me to continue, - under 'their treatment,
as I was not improving, and by the advite
of ,my „friends went to Dr. gishler and
commenced the .use of the Herb Bitters,,
both internally and externally. By the
time• I bad used two bottles I found I
was recei Vingbenefit. - Continuing, I still
improved, my band regained its power,
and lam now able to - work. It is not yet
quite as strong as formerly, but I amusing
it at - work, "mid 'it is steadily improving.
Mishler's Herb Bitters was 'the only thing
that gave me'relief. Its effects in- my case
was almost instantaneous.
