The Position of Gen.
The speech of Congressman Washburne
at Galena, Ill.; in which he defines Grant's
political statues as in entire accord with
the Republican party, deserves attention,
inasmuch as Mr. Washburne is an old per
sonal intimate friend with Geu. Grant.
Mr. Washburne states that Gen,. Grant
was an old Whig. His father, so well
known in Galena, was always an active
and influential member of the Whig party,
and after it went out of existence, of the
Republican party. The General 'was al
ways a Wbig, so far as he was a politician
at all, and never belonged to or had any
sympathy with the Democratic party.
Geu. Grant was openly and strongly for
both Constitutional amendments, and hail
ed the reconstruction act of the Thirty
ninth Congress as a solution of our difficul
ties, and h entered upon the discharge of
his duties under that act with zeal, vigi
lance and fidelity. Sympathizing with
Congress in its action, and appreciating
the importance of its being in session, he
urger? and advised such action as would
secure an extra 'session, if necessary.
When that session came he expressed the
most serious fears of the effect of a long
adjournment, and, with a far reaching
sagacity, anticipating the precise state of
things that has occurred, he used all his
influence with Senators to have them adopt
the House provision of the amended bill,
requiring the assent of the Senate to a
removal of the District Commanders.
Favoring the reconstruction acts, no effort
of his has been wanting to secure their
enforcement in letter and spirit, to the
end that the Union &eight be speedily
and fully restored;

Family.
In the recess occupied by the statue of
Washington at the Stew House, Boston,
have been placed two stones, Jac similes
of those which were placed over the re
mains of the father and uncle of John
Washington, who emigrated to Virginia,
and was the grandfather of George Wash
ington. The following is the inscription
on the largest stone, which was placed
over the remains of the great grandfather :

The originals were seen by Hon.
Charles Sumner,
while on a visit to Hog
land, who stated the fact to Earl Spencer,
proprietor of Aithory, who caused far,
similes to •he carved and presented to
Mr. Sumner, who has given theta to. the
State.
An-Election Trick.
In Cincinnati, Ohio, the ticket issued
by the Republican
. Executive Committee
for the Union voters was prepared with
unusual care, looking a good deal like a
greenback in its execution, except that
the color used was blue. The back of
the ticket presented the word " - Union"
in large white letters, on a blue field.
The face was of a light red tint -or flush,
displaying the arms of Ohio at the head.
Through - the treachery or carelessness .of
the engravers, the plate of this design fell
into improper bands and was counterfeit
ed. Tickets were issued with one or more
Democratic names substituted, and the
day before the election the Republican
journals were cautioning the voters to
guard themselves against fraud by the
utmost carefulness and circumspection.
This and similar little campaign incidents
may account to some extent for the re
action, as the disaffected press fondly
call it.
—Mrs. Partington Insulted.—The White
Mountains of New Hampshire are eVident- -
ly a great institutionvery high, -heavy
frosts, beautiful view, four dollar dinners.
But the practical eye of a certain renowned
Drake saw thosesmoothcd-faced rooks, and
thereupon adorned and variegated the
bridle path to the Tip-top House with his
familiar S. T.-1860—X. Plantation Bitters.
This raised the ire of the Mrs. Partingtons
composing the legislature of the Granite
State, who got their wise- heads together,
outlawed Dr. Drake, and make it a penal
offence to ply the ,artistic brush on their
beloved hills. Verily, the fine arts are at a
discount in New Hampshire. Query.—Did
Drake pay them for this splendid adver
tisement?

activity of imagination, and brilliancy of mental
conceptions. The patients, like the Pilgrims
in " Bunyan's Dream," seem to have wandered
to the "Enchanted Moinitalns,"one step farther,
and they see the "Celestial City," and whilst
they involuntarily gaze with open mouth at its
bronzed gates and golden cupolas, we remove
the offending member of the dental organization.
