on account of the press upon our advertis

we thought we would be enabled to furnish
all the reading matter desired, but our ad

have rejected many advertisements. We
shalt soon adopt some plan to relieve the
crowded state of our columns, and endeav

to again enlarge our paper, or refuse more
of the immense amount of advertising that
is constantly being offered us.

This being twice repeated, the same result
ensued.
Nest, a pyramid of nitto tar barrels, part

ignited, causing !lambs so tierce that many
doubted the possibility of the apparently
insignificant means before used to control
it. The barrels, placed sidewise upon eaeh

power of the "Extinguisher."
Mr. Brown, we believe has the article for

It would save in case of fire an immense
amount of property if one of the "Extin

MR. EDITOR:—An article appeared un
der the above caption, in the editorial
columns of a sheet that is seeking a status
in the community, by calumny, which
containta such a conglomeration of
truth and falsehood, that its want of histor
ic merit should excite the ridicule mid con
tempt of every negro school boy, ag:iinst the
misrepresentations of its author.
The writer, true to the instincts of the
political party he represents, has been pros
pecting, (to use his own language,) the
" classic region," known as •• Two,* RM..'
(whether by day or night, he does not state
—he knows his weakness,) in search of
some new ethnological facts relative to the
status of the negroes, far the edification of
his readers.'
lie almost trembles for fear that Repub
lican rule will hasten their extinction, mid
leave the Democratic party without a single
plank by which they may be enabled to
erect a platform for future political cam
paigns.
What a change of political tactics ! It is
but four years ago since the leader:, of that
same political party, in order that they
might ohtaln the votes of the laboring pop
ulation, asserted that theabolit ion of shivery
in the South, would cause the northern
States, and especially Pennsylvania, to ho
inundated by Southern freedmen, who
would be their competitors for labor, and
the pecuniary prospect of support for their
families would be destroyed.
Now, 'Os less than tour years since this,
the noblest act of the Nation's history has
been recorded, and we now lied them la
menting that Republican rule is decima
ting our negroes, at the rate of 1 per cent.
per annum. This is just what the Repub
licans predicted. Bat why should they
halve feared a conflict of labor. it it be true
tont three-ftmrths will. not work at all.
The alt ,chnuint of the modern Demo
erats for the negro, is proverbial They
follow him into his hovels and dens, abuse,
oppress and disfranchise him, and then ex
claim to him, " we are your true friends."
Ile asserts that th • public school for col
ored cluldren, has been taught by whites,
and that in moral and intellecLuit, culture
tun' negroes have had all the advantages 01
the s‘ hues. This is precious information
indeed, but what sane man believes it ?
If accepted as a fact, it will rebound to
the honor of our glorious old (20111111011-

That black teacher would be able to give
the author valuable lessons in the the-sies,
and would not allow his black pupils to
write the term negro with two "gg's."
Suppose it be I rue,as he states, thijt these
"buck niggers" start out after ilnrk and
plunder hen roosts, smoke houses,
which is altogether too bad to be tolerated,
is he not afraid that some of these learned
" niggers" will retort On him, and challenge
a comparison between their petty depreda
tions on society, and the gigantic erimes of
many of the leaders of that political party
with whom he deli:sins to affiliate mid
whose thetts in a single hour exceed those
of the negroes of Pennsylvania, in a whole
year ?
We warn him not to provoke a parallel
where the ratio of enure will be as " mole
hills to mountains."
If these Democratic leaders desire to be
distinguished for valor in mortal combat,
ought not they to sock foemen more worthy
of their steel, than CO aIIII.ISO theltiqaVC ,
and spend their force in hurling anathemas
at a rare that has, been groaning under the
" iron heel" of despotism for ages,--pro
serided, down trodden, physically nil
mentally, by centuries of slavery, preill
dice and oppression?
It is the philanthropy of Republicanism
which he condems, that is galvanizing
their moral condition and inspiring them
with true manhood.
