At the meeting the members will be clothed in the regalia of the Order. Invitation is extended to all those who are not members, to participate in rho ceremonies at the church. The "Daughters at' Rebekah," and the families of the members are also expected to take part in the services. The Order of Odd Fellows is one of the largest and most influ ential orgainizattons in the country, and the meeting together of the brotherhood throughout the United States, on the same day, to return thanks to God Cr the restor ation of peace to the country, will be one of the a rande-d and most impressive scenes of the kind ever witnessed in our country. EASTER.—To-morrow will be Easter, and we have no doubt many will enjoy the custorriar2; festivities of the occasion. This day is called in the calendar Easter Day, or Easter Sunday. It was anciently denom inated the Great Day, and the Feast of Feasts. IL is what is designated a Moven bleFestival, commemorating the great event of the resurrection of the Saviour from the'dead ; and its occurrence governs all the other moveable feasts. The Greek and Latin churches call it Pascha, from a Hebrew word signifying a passage, the name given to the Jewish Passover. The French call it Pasquc, and the Italians Pasqua. The name we give it is said by seine to be of Anglo- Sason derivation. The pure word East is taken to be the root of Easter; and East signified a storm, or tempest, which raging at that part of the year, is supposed to have suggested a name for the great feast occur ring in that season. But this etymology is by no means the universally received ene. As the result of our researches may prove amusing to seine of our readers, wo will cite a few other authorities on the subject. The vendable Bede says that "Easter month had its name from a goddess named Eostre,to whom the Saxons used to celebrate festivals." She was thegoddc-a of the East, whence came the storms, and whence rose the sun. Hence Easter was taken to mean " to rise," and so typified the rising of the Savior from the grave on that day Another writer, following, this idea, thinks this Saxon Eostre was the Aurora of the Latins. An I there are other opinions and notions on the point, which we have not had time and space to consider. Whatever the etymology of the term, the meaning of it is fixed. It is the feast that commemorates the event that proved the divino mission of the Author of our religion, and gave man an assurance of the truth of the doctrine of the resurrection. hence it has always been celebrated by Christians as the great " feast of feast.,t." The Chroniclers find it celebrated from the year of Christ (is, by the immediate successors of the Apostles. By Pope Grl'g , sry . tiregtliatioll of the ettlen dor in 1552. it was male to happen always on the Sunday after the run moon which nn mediatcly SIICVeCtiS the vernal equinox, or March inst. SoLoiEns 3 0 N :; T.—We have notic ed that in several of our neighboring towns, efforts are being made to rear some appro priate monument in commemoration of the fallen heroes of the late Rebellion. This is as most praiseworthy object, and deserves the encouragement of every patriotic and liberty-loving citizen. Columbia has sent a large number of as bravo and good sol diers ns ever shouldered a musket, and many of them now sleep in patriots' graves, some perhaps anmarked, and their deeds of valor known only to a low. Why should wo nut have a soldiers' monument, worthy our town and the brave men Who fell de fending the honor of the tlag? Let our soldiers and citizens wove together in this matter, and see that these br tee men sic remembered and their names and deeds perpetuated from generation to genet all on, St; that others who comae after us, may see 'ls they pass through our cemetery, that Columbia honored her patriot dead.
