AriAt 4eclare that' these signs now point
unerringly to changes, which must affect
the , business interests of the country.-for
weal or woe, just as timely preparation is
made or not to meet them. From the time
the stagnation in commercial mattsrs gave
way to the present life and activity, many,
arguing from the uncertainty prevailing
everywhere; have held • to' the opinion
that there were breakers ahead', • that a
revulsion morn or lOs, disastrous would
surely coma. That Opinion Was, never
more warranted than - now. We will give
few facts vhiclb taken with the general
tone of the press, the only safe and
reliable criterion, will at least give some
idea of tbe prospect. Take the

market. Within a few 'months prices
have been reduced. very consider ably
Especially in fabrics of modium grades
of both foreign and domestic manufacture
with which the storehouses of importers
and jobbers are literally filled to oi-er
- is this falling off noticeable.
gvea : Nvit4 this reduction and the most
lihere,l iadacetnntS offered to purchaers ;
fears-are now expressed that this class of
goods will become:a drug on the market.
There is but one result possible from this
condition of affairs: They must 'be di
pozed of, and failing to find sale in th e
auction rooms as they alreadyhave, they
will be rushed into market and sold even
at a sacrifice upon present prices. From
such a step, whiCh seems most likely to
be taken 'at no distant day, there will
unquestionably . ensue a most complete
reorganization of that branch of trade on
the baSis of miich lower prices. It is for
this that our merchants should be pre
pared.
E~Litor:
present a situation somewhat similar,
though of a more imminently dangerous
character.
__This is due to speculators,
who have worked untiringly in this
department only to find themselves
_crushed beneath their own work, which
is now tottering 'to its fall. The enor
mous advance in corn, oats, wheat, flour,
c.,is entirely due to their efforts—it can
be accounted for in no other way. But
for speculation we would to•day have been
supplying Abe markets of Europe with
brea.dstuffs, Whereas shipments to' that
quarter are almost wholly suspended.-

nature of these will fore& them into the
market—the whole matter will ere long

with unheard of rapidity. These facts
foreshadow dangers - which our mercantile
community cannot guard against too cau
