Washington, Sept. 17th, 186,6
MR. EDITOIL.This city was the scene
Oa large and imposing demonstration,
Saturday evening on the occasion of the
arrival of' the Prosidential party from
their pilgrimage to tho tomb of Douglas..
The resident population of this city is
almost unanimous in the support of the
President's policy, which together with
the fact that a largo niimber of men in
the various Departments and artisans
and mechanics employed at the Navy
yard, the Arsenal and on the public
buildings are dependant upon the ad
ministration for their bread and butter,
was sufficient to insure President John
son as cordial and enthusiastic a welcome
as greeted him in any city which he
visited during his absence.
The President was wtot at the depot at
7 P. M., by Secretaries Stanton, McCul
lough, Browning and Randall, Ass't Sec.
of the Navy,Faxen, Gens. Canby,Emory
and Thomas. (of' the Q. - m. D.) Att'y
Gen. Stansberry, Judge , Otto, Commo
dore M. Smith and other — distinguished
persons and a general handshaking took
place, after which the President accom,
panied by Pres't Lloyd of tl\e Board of
Aldermen and Capt. INfoore,P t \ es't, of' the
Board of Common Council, with others
of the party proceeded in carirges to
the City Hall, amidst the firing of; salutes
and the ch •ers of' the papulace.\ Here
he was welcomed by all apprkpriatc
speech fram Mayor Wallach, to ''hich
he replied in laugnage similar to that
which has characterized his public u ter
ances during his western trip, the sciti
memts of which have become as ramil\ar
as household words to your large class \tt
readers.
The President appears to have lo
none of his vigor from the fatiguing
journey, but his constitution is as robust
and his manner as energetic as if lie had
just come from a sojourn at Bedford
Springs or the White Mountains.
After the speeches he was escorted to
the White House by a large, body of
Cavalry, Infantry and U. S.llarines,the
' Washington Fire Department, and rani
oils civic associations and clubs, With
music and banners, where another brief
' speech was wade and thus ended this re
markable trip of His Excellency, of
which the American people, whether ad
vocates or opponents of his policy, have
reason to be proud.
With the return of the President, the
city again becomes the resort of the pro
fessed supporters of " my policy" who
think the Philadelphia platform is all
right if they can only got, a post office or
a custom house berth.
Senator Cowan is here now having
daily interviews with the President, but
as your Correspondent is not a confidant
of either party,l. cannot inform you what
is their idea of the pro , ,-,pects of the elec
tion in Pennsylvania.
Secretary Seward, who returned in ad
vance of the President, laboring under a
bevere attack of cholera morbus, is con
sidered out of danger by his physician
and will soon resame his duties at the
State Department.
Thousands of the German element are
atracted to this city this week to attend
Der Seltzttzert Feste which commenced
yesterday and continues throughout the
week. There was an immense turnout
yesterday to witness the procession which
paraded the - principal streets, one of the
principal features of which was a chariot
drawn by six horses and containing thirty
eight beautiful young ladies, two repre
senting-the Goddess of Liberty and Ger
mania and the remainder, the thirty-six
States. The exercises take place in the
Seventh Street Park, located a short dis
tance from the city, which has been dec
orated for the occasion in a very tasteful
manner and will consist of shouting
matches, athletic games, gymnastic exhi
bitions, dancing, &c. The prizes cost
upwards of two thousand dollars and as
the weather now is delightful it will be a
pleasant and successful festival.
The Sehutzen Feste is the national
feztival of the Getman people dating Welt
in its origin many hundred years and it
is no wonder our adopted citizens of Teu
tonic birth love to participate in those
amusements which carries them back, as
it were, across the waters, and suggests
to their patriotic memories pleasing remi
nisces of their Faderland.
The National Theatre, late Grocer's,
has been reconstructed and improved,and
was opened last night by the tronous dra
matic spectacle of the "Ice Witch." The
performance was very creditable and
gave universal satisfaction. •
There is considerable excitement in
the sporting fraternity in reference to a
grand match game of 'halt whieti. takes
place to-day in the rear of the Presiden
tial Mansion, between the National Base
Bali Club of this city and the Excelsior
of Broo.k,lyn.
