Getting an Office.
The great majority of those who seek
office at Washington, and especially
clerkships, betray remarkable ignorance
of the means by which to accomplish
their ends. .A.lutost every day that om
niscient gentleman, the "Special Wash
ingtoa Correspondent," informs the pub
lic that "a large number of applications
for clerkships have been received at the
Treasury Department. There are no
vacancies, and the applications have
been 'pigeon-holed.' " This information
has been steadily given to the public
since the beginning of the Rebellion, and
it promises to go down to history a: great
er humber of times than "all quiet
along the Potomac. To these "pigeon
holed" applicants we have a few words
to say, concerning Government offices,
which may save them anxious hours and
fruitless hopes. To get office in Wash
ington it is necessary that some promi
nei t politician, or statesman, if you can,
one, should make your case a personal
matter. You may have letters of rec
ommendation, which, if pasted together,.
propuld reach around the glol e ; you may
be the only surviving son of the only
surviving Revolutionery hero ; you may
bear upon your body the scars of your
country's enemies ; you may have voted
"the party ticket" for years : you may
be endorsed by every honest man in your
community—but all this will avail you
nothing, unless you can reach "the pow
er behind the throne," which is only
reached by politicians of eminence. If
you fail to get this influence enlisted in
your favor, you will find your applica
tion with its voluminous reeommenda
. Lions, "pigeon-holed"—a result as final
as inevitable. Any one who has been
behind the scenes in 'Washington, will
agree with us that official patronage is
almost all together controlled by person
al relations—influence, not merit, is the
key which open Goverment. locks.
.We are thus candid in our remarks,
'because we know that there are so many
young and soldiers who go to Washing
ton in search of clerkships, believing
that letters of recorinnendatfon, and the
aaritten 'indorsement of their member of
Congress, is all that is necessary to put
them in the way of easy work and 'good
- pay. After' staying in Washington a
couple of weeks, and spending more
money for their living than they can af
ford, they learn "there is no vacancies ;
your application has been filed, and is
the three hundred and fiftieth on the
list ; as soon as there is a vacancy your
case will 'be considered in regular order."
The disappointed applicant returns home,
-wondering how it is that John.Jnnes got
a position only two days before, in the
same Department. The reason was, that
John Jones "knew the ropes"—he Made
his appointment a personal matter with
the Congressmen of his District and
again, John Jones had claims upon the
party, which more than counterbalances
your "claims upon your country," your
honesty or merit. You . were a good
fisherman, but you used the wrong bait.

Scrofula, or King's Evil,
is a constitutional disease, a corruption of the
blood, ,by which this' fluid becomes vitiated,
weak, and poor. Being in the circulation, it
pervades the whole body, and may burst out
in disease on any part of it. No organ is free
from its attacks; nor is there one which it may
not destroy. The scrofulous taint is variously
caused by mercurial disease, low living, dis
ordered or unhealthy food, impure air, filth
and filthy habits, the depressing vices, and,
above all, by the venereal infection. What
ever be its origin, it is hereditary in the con
stitution, descending "from parents to children
unto the third mid fourth generation ; " indeed,
it seems to be the rod of Him who, says, "I
will visit the iniquities of the fathers upon
their children."
Its effects commence by deposition from the
blood of corrupt or ulcerous matter, which, in
the lungs, liver, and. internal organs, is termed
tubercles; in the glands, swellings; and on
the surface, eruptions or sores. This foul cor
ruption, which genders in the blood; depresses
the energies of life, so that scrofulous constitu
tion not _only suffer - from scrofulous corn-,
plaints, but., they have far less power to with
6tand the attacks ,of other diseases; conse
quently, vast numbers perish by disorders
which, although not scrofulous in their nature,
are still rendered. fatal ) ..:y this taint in the
system. Most of the consumption which de
cimates the human family has its origin directly
in this scrofulous contamination; and many
destructive diseases of the liver, kidneys, brain,
and, indeed, of all the organs, arise from or
are aggravated by the same cause.
One quarter of all our people are scrofulous ;
their persons are invaded by this lurking in
fection, and their health is undermined by it.
To cleanse it from the system we must renovate
the blood by an alterative medicine, and in
vigorate it by healthy food and exercise.
Such a medicine we supply in
AYER'S
Compound Extract of Sarsaparilla,
the most effectual remedy which the medical
skill of our times can devise for this every
where prevailing and fatal malady. It is com
bined from the most active remedials that laye
been discovered for the expurgation of this foul
disorder from the blood, and the rescue of the
system from its destructive consequences.
Hence it should be employed for the cure of
not only Scrofula. but also those other affec
tions which arise from it, such as Eauryivr.
and SKIN DISEASES, - Sr. ANrnoNY's Finn,
Boss, or EICESIPELAS, PIMPLES, PUSTULES,
BLOTCHES, BLAINS and Minx, TUMORS, TETTEE.
and SALT RHEUM, SCALD HEAD, I.llNowowir,
Itunumnyism, SYnirrxrie and Motown/a, Dis-
BASES, DROPSY, DYSPEPSIA, DEBILITY, and,
indeed, ALL COMPLAINTS MUSING FROM VITIA
TED Olt Imrunn Br.oon. The popular belief
in "impurity of the blood" is founded in truth,
for scrofula is a degeneration of the blood. The
particular purpose and virtue of this Sarsapa
rilla is to purify and regenerate this vital fluid,
without which sound health is impossible in
continuinated constitutions.

Ague Cure 9
FOIL THE SPEEDY CEDE OF
Intermittent Fever, or Fever and Ague,
Remittent Fever, Chill Fever, D b
Ague, Periodical Headache, or Bilious
Headache, and Bilious Fevers, indeed
for.the whole class of diseases orlginat-•
ing in biliary derangement, caused by
the Malaria of Miasmatic Countries.
:We are enabled here to offer the community a
remedy which, while it cures the above complaints
with certainty, is still I:erfectly harmless in any
quantity. Such a remedy is invaluable in districts
where these afflicting disorders prevail. This
"Cunt:" expels the miasmatic poison of Frxrnt
AND Anon from the system, and prevents the de
velopment of the disease, if taken on the first ap
proach of its premonitory symptoms. It is not only
the best remedy ever yet discovered for this class
of complaints, but also the cheapest. The large
quantity we supply for a dollar brings it within the
reach of every body ; and in bilious districts, where
FEVER. AND AGUE prevails, every body should
have it and use it. freely both for cure and. protec
tion. A great superiority of this remedy over any
other ever discovered for - the speedy and.certain
cure of Intermitteots is that it contains no Quinine
or mineral; consequently it produces no quinism or
other injurious effects whatever upon the constitu
tion.- Those cured by it are left as healthy as if
they had never bad the disease.
lever and Ague is not alone the consequence of
the miasmatic poison. A great variety r of disor
ders arise from• its irritation, among which are
Neuralgia, Rheumatism, Gout, Headache, Blind
ness, 7 oothaehe, Earache, Catarrh, Asthma, Pal
pitation, Painful Affection of the Spleen, hyster
ics, Pain in the Bowels, Code, Paralysis and De
rangement of the Stomach, all of which, when
originating in this cause, put on the intermittent
type, or become periodical. This'" Cunt" expels
the poison from the blood, and consequently cures
them :drank°. It is an invaluable protection to
immigrants-and persons travelling or temporarily
residing in the malarious districts. If taken occa
sionally or daily while exposed to the infection,
that gill be excreted from the system, and cannot
accumulate in sufficient quantity to ripen into dis
ease.. Hence it_is even more valuable for protec
tion than cure, and few will ever suffer from Inter
mittents if they avail themselves of the protection
this remedy affords.
