A DARK NI.GUT.-7—Last Tuesday night
•was the most gloomy night of the season.
The rain poured down in torrents, and the
heavens sent forth heavy peals ofthunder,
which made , timid people nervous. The
night Nvas pitch dark, servo only when : lit
up by vivid flashes of lightning. And du

safe—surrounded by all the• luxuries and
cprniforts'ot his eottii'go :nee:think

'pedestrians . who were so unfortunate as to
be caught out that dismal night, had to
grope their way in darkness, on . his ac

trained animals was the best we•have over

a slight sprinkling of Circus,to be enabled.
to couple the names.' Dan - delivered a dis
course upon the merits and deMerits of the
'different animals, and was listened to in
an attentive manner. The 'Blind Horse
.Excelsior is truly a wonder, and no one
should miss the opportunity of beholding
the manner in which a horse can be taught
and learn hereafter to treat the animal as
ho deserves.

The office in this place is situated in a cen

SOLDIER'S. UNION BALL.:—The Ball
given by the " Soldier's Union,"
Follows' Hall, on Wechiesday evening
last, was a grand affair. Wo are certain
that the Hall never held as many ladies to
engage in the "mazy" .as it did on that
evening. They ' could be 'numbered by
scores, and the way they entered into the
"ring" was sufficient evidence that enjoy
ment was supreme. The Hall was beauti
fully decorated. Badges of different corps
were hung' upon the walls- and • the star
spangled banner floated gracefully o'er
head. The ceremonies Wore kept up until
an, early hour on Thursday morning.
COMPLIMENTARY.—We are indebted
to the "gentlemanly resident manager" of
the ,`trolyhymn ian 'Quartekte,': t fOr a corn
plimentary to 'attend their .concert this
evening at Strasburg! liow considerate in
the young man, heavily ladenod. with
empty honors. What does he ape ire ? Is
ii a pulf 'or blowing•dP ? guess it is.
The. "Quartette" ere really' good amateur
'singers, and would, no doubt have had a
crowded , house, when they, performed in
this place,if they would have been so lucky
as to secure an Agent, who vas' possessed
with a reasonable share of wisdom. As it
was we 'considered their not having a
crowded house to be solely on account of
the wisdom, prudence, sagacity:and fore
thought of their polite and intelligent resi
dent manager.
