MAsoNIC —The interest in the Ma
sonic Fraternity—which was never more
flourishing than at the present time—has
received a new impetus in this vicinity by
the proposition to erect a handsome Ma
sonic Hall in Columbia. To this end an
awl of incorporation has passed both
brandies of the Legislature. An associa
tion will be formed with a capital of $20,000.
- We hope the enterprise will go on.
RAFTING.—During the past week a
large number of rafts have arrived and
passed by this place.' The late rains have
had the effect of swelling the river, m
doubt sending a feeling of relief to the
hearts of the denizens of the backwoods,
who are now able to bring the result
of their winter's labor to market
-Very little lumber has, as yet, been pur
,chased at this place. Holders are asking
; too high a figure, and may float their rafts
to the lower markets thinking to get better
prices..
How PAtovoicEgo.—Did you ever
read what you supposed to be a very in
teresting paragraph in a newspaper, and
found when you were just getting at the
"gist".of tne joke, that you suddenly run
against the annQuncement that somebody
had just received so and so in great profu
sion, and was prepared to undersell every
body else this side of the Atlantic ? We
have been caught in that snap many a
time,-and had we ever learned the manly
art of profane swearing we doubt not we
should have " went in" on the Billings
gate with a gusto. But to talk thus is
profitless—what we went to get at is, to
-inform the public that E. Worrell d Co..
Sl9 Arch Street, Philadelphia, make the
most fashionable—most handsome,as well
as the cheapest clothing in the city.
ANNIVERSARY OF THE DEATH OF
THI3 ll , Al3Er.J..l.ox.—.llforiAlt.}or last, the Ist
annigersary of the Death of the Rebellion,
was slightly celebrated in this place. The
observance thattlie day demanded was not
:given., but in the afternoon - a number of
Veterans under command of Capt. T. M.
FWier, paraded through the streets, fol
lowed by an indefinite number of boys
and girls. The "Vets" presented a good
appearance and we were glad to notice
that they had not forgotten to keep step to
Vie music, and could "dress" a line that
reminded their comrades of eventful days.
—We understand that efforts are being
;mule to raise a Volunteer Company. We
trope such is the case. There are enough
Veterans in , Columbia to raise a splendid
company. Lot it be done and in case of
raids we will have the "stro arm of the
military" for protection,
A SWINDIA,•,-,Hammett Sr, Co., New
York, as ti very special favor, modestly
proposes to sell us a rich prize in a lottery,
to be drawn in Covington, I y., on the 30th
inst., for the sum of ten dollars, provided
we keep the arrangement 'strictly private.'
They say
" "We have oursqlves carefully seleoted a full cer
tificate of a • Package of sixteenths Tickets, and to
convince you of our confidence iq the complete
success of this• Lucky Package we will guarantee,
that if you do not draw at least $5OOO above the price
($lO) of the Tickets, ve will at our own expense, send
you another full Package of' 26 Tickets free of any
charge, in the Popular E t xtre. Lottery," Modest, is
it not ?
' 1V know perfectly well that at least
a dozen other people in this vicinity have
had the same offer, and as no body can
make a living by selling; a great many
large'prizes for a very little money, we at
once infer that the oftbr is a base cheat.—
Think: of an editor haying e. 5000 ! why we
wouldn't know what to do with it, The
bait don't tempt us—not in the
DUO let it tempt you, reader; Shun such
yile swindlers as you would a nest of pole
pats.

BODY FOUND. — We learn that the body
of George W, Grubb, who was drowned on
Monday, 19th ult., by being carried over
the breast of the dam at this place ; was
found lodged upon a rock about ten miles
below Safe Harbor. Decomposition had
not destroyed the body enough to prevent
recognition.
SPRING —As the Spring advances,
our streets presents a more lively and busy
appearance while scores of people may be
suen wending their way to the neat and
tidy store of I. 0. Bruner, Front Street
above Locust. He hes, during the week,
just added to his stock a splendid assort
ment of Spring Goods, which are now sold
at astonishing low prices. _
There were three marriages in town
on Thursday evening last. The band was
out and the upper end of the borough was
in a festive mood. The Calatimunpians
were also in there glory and it is said that
lager :beer flowed freely in the vicinity of
; the Market House, being obtained by the
llberality of the happy husbands.
PREPARING TO MOVE.—Mr. J. B.
Bachman, having disposed of the ground
on which his Planing- Mill now stands, is
making arrangements to move on his
wharf property; between the lower rail
road track and the river. Workmen are
busily engaged in laying the foundation,
and in a short time the whole structure
will rest safely from further encroachments
of Railroad Companies.

be assisted by our young friend, " Bud"
Griffith, with his Guitar, who is acknowl
edged to be the hest guitar player in the
State. T. S. Steinhauser of Lancaster will
perform on the Piano. It will be a rare
musical treat, and we advise everybody
to be on hand. It will be worth the ad
mission to hear the Guitar Solo.

Smith's Hall, Middletown, by the ladies
connected with the Catholic Church. It
will commence on Tuesday next, and con

cook stove, cf:e. A magnificent silver
pitcher, waiter and goblets, are to be dis
posed of by vote, and will lie given to any
clergyman in Lancaster or Dauphin coun
ties who receives the highest number of
votes.
EXCITEMENT IN LANC.ISTER.—One
of the most foul and deliberate murders
ever perpetrated in this country was dis
covered in Philadelphia on Saturday last.
Eight persons in all,of the Dearing family,
were murdered in cold blood. A man
answering the description of the murderer,
was arrested in Lancaster on Thursday
night. He got on a freight train at Steam
boat Station. The Conductor asked him
where he was going. He said he had been
robbed in Philadelphia and was on his way
to Chicago. Information of the fact was
given at a telegraph station and when the
train arrived at Lancaster he was arrested.
It caused great excitement and so certain
were they of their- man that some of the
crowd wanted him killed without trial.
—We learn by telegraph, that the mur
derer eras arrested on Ft:iday morning,
at Market St.,Bridge, Phila. He is report
ed to have confessed his guilt, and IL was
with difficulty that he escaped lynching.

A CARD.
TWO False Reports aro ;in circulation,
calculated to deceive the public and
operate detrimental to my interest, viz ;-
Ist. "That there are no large apple trees
for Sale at the Columbia Nursery." This
report is traced to a Clerk in one of our re
spectahle Hardware Stores. The. truth is
we have now on hand over 25,000 fine large
Apple Trees, comprising all the popular
varieties.
2nd. " That we are closing up the Nur
sery business, consequently it is not to be
presumed that a good assortment of :stock
is, or still hereafter he found at our Nur
sery." This and like reports spring into
existence, probably from the fact that we
are going into the manfilacturc of Brick,
and also because our prices for most of our
Nursery Stoca are so low in comparison to
other establishments or tree dealers. The
inibrence would naturally be that we are
closing out. This is not the case. We are
enlarging instead of decreasing our Nur
sery, anti shall continue to do so if the de
mand on us for stock continues to increase
hereafter as it has of late.
