. bitt. EDITOR :—We would inquire
through the medium of yourJournad,what
really is the object of those persons who
are so Mixdous for, and So exceedingly in
terested in the opening or extension of
Cherry Street
In the improvement of oar town the first
e 31141,1eration might to becenvenienee and
beauty. Every man of culture win) ea
petits to make Columbia his permanent
home has a personal interest in making it
a pretty, a "green country town" as pos
sible. Everythitry, tending to invest it with
pleasant associations in the minds of its
inhabitants should be taken into consider
athin.
We are not building for ourselves alone,
but for the future. And -If there are any
historical associations coninteted with the
place, they should be carefully cherished.
Now r cpnvelvo that the preservation of
the ancient Wright mansion on Second
street, withits rural -looking old front and
most graceful' mantle - of Amerham 'ivy
decorating it in the summer with A green
and in auttitnn with a crimson Gothic tra
cery, to be an act of, this kind, and I for
one should be extremely loath to gee the
old honteStead destroyed.
It is well known to those who are per
sonally intimate with thafarnily to whom
it belongs that its destrael ion would be re
garded as something approaching a ca
lamity. And as that son who is manag
ing agent for the isnot°, Maj. Samuel
Wright, is now absent in time Federal army,
and 'another son, Lieut. Wm. Wright, a
prisoner in a rebel prison, it scanty w me
peculiarly ungenerous in those who 8113
uigirig the demolition of this old mansion,
to pursue the relentless course they seem
lOjtave, marked oat for themselves.
Doubtless it would gratify those indi
viduals to have Cherry Streetextended di
rectly to the Susquehanna, and if Calton
bia was a commercial town ofsuch impor
tance as necessarily to reqedre thls innova
tion upon the private privileges of others,
there - would be some apparent excnise for
them, but as the matter stands the mass of
our population have positively no Interest
whatever in the matter, and the whole af
fair is narrowed down to a question of the
'rights of an old and respected resident on
the ono hand., and on the other' the mere
pecuniary intelesta half a' dozen intru
der e , who propose to ensconce themselves
fit the part oftite: town alluded to.
