THE 14)74 OF COUNTRY
J.PIES S. WATKINS
• How incomprehensible is the love of
country interwoven with our natures, and
what. a power does it exorcist) over our
hearts I It is the exile's hope,
though he dwell in lands gorgeous as the
fabled li . ."asti It is the weary trayellees
guiding star; the goal to which the mari
ner speeds o'er the bounding wave his
rlashirig prow.
"This royal Throne of King+. this scepter'] !Au,
This Earth of Majesty. ttjhg dent of Mare,
This other Eden. Jetni.pariitlise
This Artress, built by suture for herseff,
Against infection and the hand of war
This happy breed ()Open, this little world :
This precious stone set to the silver sea,
Which nerves it In the office of a wall,
Ur as II west defensive to n house,
Against the envy of lePs happhw lands;
trh 9eblessed plot,th Is Earth.this ltoa hn,thie England
Door for her reputation th rough the world."
;go one can fail to detocta love of country
in the above lines of Shakespeare; they are
pregnant with true loyal ardor, and un
swerving fidelity. Such was the love of
Shakespeare for his native place—the
.merry old England.
With Americans, too,the love of country
has always been first in their hearts, and.
I..iberty, their watchword—
"The love of Liberty with life iR given,
And life itself the inferior gift of liegven."
I once resided in a house with an elderly
English Lady, 't a half French, hotter half
lUnglish woman," as Julia StlyS--.WhOSO
anior potrio., a childhood passed in la belle
France, and a forty or 'fifty years' residence
in A.meries, has not in the least degree di

. avbate two, i. believe, looked upon myinde
- pendent idens—my disregard of rank, and
refusal to how M any save arlitocracy of
mind—with utter astonishment. Roasting
p, decent from the nobility of tlngland i and
on the maternal side, even from royalty
itself, reared in the very precincts of the
Queen, still remembering the laud of her
birth,and abhorring every thing un-English
as foreign, silo, it, Is said, from infancy,
looked upon that ' gilded toy, a Ring,' and
upon the pomps and vanities attendant on
that state, with almost religious reverence;
the greater, perhaps, Irani the recollection,
that on coming to the "land of liberty,"
she was led by the republican arguments
oflove, to cast off the bonds of maternal
restraint, and the rank she did inherit, and
to a lowly fortune link her high estate ;
that estate to which, like the saline wife
of the patriarch, she is ever looking long
ingly back. In our frequentconversations,
my reasonings, I am convinced, seemed to
her a savor of that revolution, of whose
horrors she professed to retain a vivid re
membrance. She admired the American
Republic, but loved merry old England,
the home of heryouth.
