that the bounty be-paid as soon - as inns

town inviting to be hell ail§ evening.
Wike, and A. Bruner,
Jr., were appointed a committee to act in
concert with the recruiting officers and
.others, to carry out the object of the
above resolutions.
July 13, 1864.—G. 'Bogle and 11. Wil
son were appointed a committee to go to
Lancaster to confer with the 'County
Commissioners in regard to the county
assuming the payment of the bounty
promised to the volunteers, and ascertain
at what time they will pay the same.
The Finance Committee, with the
Treasurer, were authorize•l to borrow
the necessary amount of money to pay
off the bounties—the loan nut to exceed
live thousand dollars. The said commit
tee also to go to Harrisburg, and pay over
the money and get proper vouchers for
the same. Adjourned.
ESCAPED FROM PR. lAN. —Last night
a convict named James Kelley broke out
of the L monster County Prison. He
took up the flooring boards of his cell
and worked a passage into the hot air
:chamber, through which he passed a dis
tande of about sixty feet, tOrcing open
the iron gate at the 1 Aver end. crow
there he worked his was into the cold
air flue by tearing up the plank covering
it., and made his way to the cold air
chimney at die north side of the prison
wall. From this chimneY he broke a
bole through the outside wall of the
prison, and made his:escape. The 'hide
was worked through stone masonery fif
teen inches thick, aboutsix feet from the
ground. Kelley was on the 19th of
August, 1852, sentenced to eight years
imprisonment for larceney, on seven
counts. Ile also made his escape from
the prison on the 6th of May, 1863, and
was returned on the sth of December.
1853. He is a mulatto, with black hair
and brown eyes, and is 5 feet and 61
inches in height.—Eapresa sth inst.
This is the scoundrel that carried on a
wholesale game of robbery in Columbia
some years since. We hope that he may
be again arrested and placed in some
barn f'or safe 'keeping.
A WEEK Or EXCITEMENT.—The last
week has been one or excitement in Co
bunbia—many startling rumors were
afloat, calculated to frighten timid men
and nervous women. &Jute persons had
the rebels approaching Wrightsville, and
were about to shell our town.
- Rumors were abundant. The rebels
were reported at Conowingo bridge. and
were marching on Lancaster, while .)thers
had them nmving on the Pennsylvania
Railroad to destroy the bridge at Co.ites-
Some of our merchants commenced
packing up their goods. The 0,411111 'AI.
Bank Moved their effects to Lancaster—
thence to Reading. Consternation seem
ed for a while to prevail.
. Sunday afid Monday were busy days
for our ferrymen. The steamboats were
'constantly running, carrying reftizces
from York. Franklin, and Adams coun
ties. No fears are now entertained that
the "Johney's" w;11 come this way, arid
things have settle,' down into quiet. For
some days past the refuges, have been
returning with t .eir horses, cattle,
wagons, 4:e.

ESchbach, Agent for D.spont & Co., was
biought before Samuel Evans, Justice of

sadly in want of rain in this section. It
is now many weeks since we have had
any of any account, an the ground is
baked into• the consistency of bricks.
The consequence is, that the corn, tobac
co, and all garden stuffs are suffering se
verely. A good copius shower would
put a vastly different appearance on
things.
DEATrf Or Da. CASSIDY.—Dr. Patrick
Cassidy, Surgeon of the Board of En
rollment of tce Ninth Congressional dis-
trict, died at his residence, in Lancaster.
Pa., on the 12th - inst. He was a highly
popular physician and a good citizen.
His death will be much regretted.
FOUND DROWNED.-A boy, supposed
to hare belonged to a boat, was found
drowned at Falmouth a short time since.
He was pulled up to the surface of the
water by a towing line. He was about
thirteen years-of age—name 'unknown.
THE quota of Lancaster county under
the recentcall of the Governor fur DJ
day volunteers is 9G4.
Gen. Grant has been cognizant all
along of this invasion, but will nut re
duce his force or leave his field of opper
ations. Petersburg is closely invested;
our troops have worked their way to the
city, and the news of its surrender is
hourly expected at Baltimore.
