This is the fourth number of itg Twenty-ninth volume, and contains a very interesting Valedictory by L. V. Bierce, G..l', N. We would advise all who be long to this Fraternity to subscribe fur this monthly, as they will find it of great use, keeping them well posted in regard to the Order throughout the State. PRANK LESLIE'S LADY'S MAGAZI NE : This valuable Magazine and Gazette oi' Fashion for May, has been received, and contains an excellent selection of the la test fashions, beautifully illustrated with fine steel engravings. It also has a full size pattern of the new Ceinture Parisi enne, low Bodice for evening dresses, and little girl's Gored Dress,Boclicoancl Skirt in one, for cutting out and making—you thus have the pattern and explanation before you, which alone is worth the price of the magazine. We commend it to our lady readers for perusal. It can be had at Win. U. Hess's book store. GorNo INTO THE WIG DI:SINT:SS.— A Western editor requests his subscribers who owe him more than six years sub scriptions, to send him a lock of their hair, so that-he may know that they arc still living. In answer to which a con temporary says that if his delinquent subscribers would do thus, he would be obliged to leave off editing and go into the wig business. POLITENESS--The basis of all true politeness is kindness. All politeness should be real, and from the heart. if you constantly strive to reason away your prejudices against people, you will become polite. Most of our dislikes have very little foundation. A large proportion of 'them spring from idle gossip, from fan. pled slights, or from trials of our temper iiratie,h we could very easily forgive, were it really our interest to do so. • But it is always our interest to keep on the best terms with every one who is not really bad or disreputable. To do this one must niainta.in an unsoasing watch over his or her temper, and suffer no op iortunity to escape, however trifling. of gratifying others. If kindness of heart be the first requisite in politeness, it is quite as true that ussiditity is not less needed. SLEEP.-It is a delicious moment cer tainly, that of being well nestled in bed, and feekiiig that you shall drop gently to sleep. The good is to come—not past ; the limbs have just been tired enough to r.:nder the remaining in one posture de lightful ; the labor of the day is done,— A gentle failure of the perceptions comes creeping over one; the spirit of conscious ness disengages itself more and more with slow and hushing degrees, like a mother detaching her hand from her sleeping child; the mind seems to have a balmy lid_ closing over it, like the eye; 'tis closing—'tis closed. The mys terious spirit has wee, to take its airy zbatuds. ROOM Foe Ara...—Though the world is wide enough for every one to take a little, and there appears no reason why we should jostle and make one another unhappy as. we pass along, yet so it is we arc continually thwartin; and crossing each other at right anglos; S and some lose all memory of tho temper that governed when first setting out. A PARROT CALLED AS A WITNESS..--- A. man lost a favorite parrot, which was discovered in the poseession of another person, who refused to give it up. He was accordingly summoned to produce the bird in a court of law. The real owner, on being asked how he could prove that it belonged to him, replied that the par rot should be his only witness. It was then brought into court in ticage cover ed with cloth, and began to whistle the tune, "Take your time, Miss Lucy," while some subject was discussed by the court. Its owner then put hie face to the cage, end desired the parrot to kiss him, which the bird did ,most affectionately. "Ho .will do the same to any one," said the defendant, and, on patting his mouth to the cage, the parrot seised his lip and bit -it severely, to the great amusement of the ,court. Its owner then took it out of the rage and kept it on his hand, when the bird answered several questions put to it in a ready and extraordinary manner, and also showed so much affection for its mus ter that the judge iteraidiately ordered the kairiot restored to Witted the de 4110tork / 2 4 to PO all wiciircc•—"- War stA'rasra Cratere.
