Rumored Capture of Murfresborough-7wo
Generals and a Michigan Regiment Cap
tured by the Rebels—Destruction of the
Railroad Depot—The Town Shelled.
NASEIVILLE, July 13.—The city is filled
with rumors about a fight at Murfresboro'
to-day. The most reliable reports confirm
the statements about a fight having occur
red, with .the following particulars:—About
three o'clock this morning a large force of
Rebel cavalry, under command of Colonel
Zorrest, composed principally of two Geor
gia and one other regiment of regular cav
alry, drove in our pickets and assaulted the
the town. The Ninth Michigan Regiment,
Colonel Parkhurst, was surrounded and
captured. General T. T. Crittenden, of In
diana, and General Duffield, who had re
cently arrived to take command of the
Twenty-third Brigade, were also made pris
oners, with Lieutenant Barry, Commissary,
and Lieutenant C. H. Irwin, Acting Assis
tant Quartermaster.
The Third Minneso'n, Colonel Leslie, and
Ilewitt's First Kentucky Battery made a
gallant resistance, and their bravery is be
yond praise. They saved the railroad track
and bridge, losing but few men. The Reb
els destroyed the railroad depot and other
property. including the telegraph.
The town was being shelled by Hewitt's
Battery at the last report, at 3 o'clock P.
N.. to-day.
Forrest is not expected to make an at
tempt upon Nashville, as ho will find work
enough for him to attend to before approach
ing the city. By reliable accounts he had
3,000 cavalry, but no artillery or infantry.
A consultation has just been held between
Governor Johnson, Colonel John F. Miller,
commanding the post; Colonel Lewis D.
Campbell, Provost Marshal; Captain 0. D.
Green, of Gen. Buell's Staff Captain McFee
lv, United States Commissary; Captain
Bingham. United States Quartermaster;
Captain Bredan, of General burnout's Staff,
and Colonel Gillam, of the Governor's Staff.
Confidence is maintained in the ability of
the Government to protect the city and re
store tranquality in the neighborhood.
LOUISVILLE, July 13.—Rumorshave reach
ed here that Morgan's Guerillas, 2,800
strong, in two squads, aro at Harrodsburg
and Danville, destroying property and steal
ing horses.
Considerable excitement exists in Louis
ville on account of the guerillas. Effective
measures have been taken to prevent incur•
sions.
Kamm - us, 3ulyl3.—Botween 3,000 and
4,000 Georgia and Texas guerillas, under
Colonel Forrest, attacked the Eleventh Mich
igan and Third Minnesota Regiments in
Murfresboro' early this morning. Desperate
fighting ensued. At 3 o'clock this afternoon
the Michigan troops had surrendered.
The Minnesota Regiment was strongly
entrenched, and cut up the enemy terribly
with liewitt's Kentucky Battery, repulsing
them with great slaughter in three charges.
Flags of truce were sent in by Forrest de
manding its surrender. Colonel Leslie re
plied that ho could hold his position for a
week.
The railroad track was torn up, but bas
been replaced.
An attack on Nashville is not improbable,
Colonel Leslie is reported as falling back
on Nashville.
Cannonading bas been distinctly beard
here. Colonel Boone has arrived with sev
eral companies.
Later
Murfresboro' has been taken by the Rebels
consisting principally of Texan Rangers
under Forrest. but was shelled by our bat
teries. The Ninth Michigan was captured,
but the Third Minnesota with their Battery
was still holding out at the last accounts.
Brigadier Generale Duffield and Critten
den, of Indiana, were captured.
There is great excitement in Nashville,
and an attack is expected. The troops here
will give the best fight possible, and if com
pelled to ,yield, will shell the city. A. bat-
tery is in position for that emergency.
The Latest from Nashville.
Minim ax, July 14.—1 t was the Ninth
instead of the Eleventh Michigan Regiment,
which surrendered at Murfreaboro'. The
Eleventh arrived at camp near the Louis
ville" Fair Grounds yesterday afternoon,
after an unsuccessful three days' chase after
Morgan.
NASI/VILLt t 3 P. M.—Members of Hewitt's
Battery who escaped from Murfreaboro' re
port that the battery of the Third Minnesota
Regiment had surrendered, and that Col.
Duffield was mortally wounded. Gen. T. A.
Crittenden, of Indiana, was taken prisoner.
An escaped prisoner reports that the First,
Second and Fourth Georgia Regiment, the
First Kentucky Regiment, the Texan Rangers
and 1,700 mounted men, under command of
Colonels Forrest and Warner, 0,000 in all,
advancing on Nashville.
The Fourth Pennsylvania Cavalry, and
the Seventy-fourth Ohio arrived from Leba
non last night. Four regiments are coming
from Huntsville.
