CI thampton counties, on the Easteria Shore of Virginia, is about 1,800,.and that it is threat ened by 4,000 Federal troops, which the En quirer thinks is an exaggeration. Pee haps it will soon be undeceived in this matter. Another account of the fight at Piketon, Kentucky, said to be reliable, reduces it to much smaller proportions than previous re perts. The Confederates were overpowered and dispersed, but they numbered only one thousand, of whom ninety were killed and fifty taken prisoners. Other accounts reit erate the importance of the victory and the number of prisoners taken. From the Wheeling papers we have some later intelligence from Gen. Itosecrans' col - lie was still manoeuvering to catch Gen. Floyd's brigade. The latest intelligence from Fortress Mon , TOO reports that the Confederates had as sembled in considerable force at Great Bethel, and that an attack upon Newport News was anticipated. In view of such a .contingency the Federal forces at the latter .point had been reinforced. The late fire at . :Norfolk had destroyed a large quantity of stores, including nearly all the oil in the city. We learn from a person who was in Norfolk .recently that thu Merrimac has not Leen taken out of the dry dock. A close fence .had been built up around her, and no parties were permitted to go inside except the work men and officers. 1=1:1 Mr. Chase has concluded his negotiation ,with the New York banks for .9,, 50,000,000 : at seven per cent. interest. The option of taking the third fifty millions of the 7 3-10 .loan is left open until January. The retreat of the Confederate forces un der Price and McCullough into Aakansas is confirmed. They go to Port Smith to win ter, or perhaps for operations along the. Mississippi river. Before leaving Missouri they destroyed all the haystacks, corn cribs, ,along their line of march. Goveroor ilieks has called a special ,ession of the Maryland Legislature, to assemble at Annapolis, on Tuesday, December 3. Tne privateer Sumter, on the sth ult., boarded a British vessel in latitude lieg. 30 minutes north, and lon. 47 deg. 23 min utes, and from Panama we learn that she was at Darbadoes on Oct. 22, but three, day before the time that her crew were repeated to be in confinenzeut on board the Niagua lathe mouth of the Mississippi. A despatch from San FranciQco, dated the 14th inst., states that the privateer school's!. Neva, from China, had been seized time by Capt. Pease, of the revenue cutter l'larey. From Southern papers, received via Nor folk, we have some later intelligence from that quarter. There is nothing actually later from Port Royal, excert a despatch from Charleston to the Richmond Enquirer of Thursday last, which states that Gen. Sherman had taken possession of Pinckney Island, seized all the able-bodied negro men and sent them to the fleet. No attempt had yet been made to land on the mainland.— Pinckney Island fronts on Port Royal har bor and lies between Hilton head Island and the mainland. Gens. Lee and Ripley were reported to be at Coosawhatchie, where they were constructing defensive works to prevent the advance of the National troops. The Richmond Despatch claims to have in formation that the authorities of South Car olina have cotnmanicated with the govern ment upon the subject of hoisting the black flag, to which allusion has been made since the attack upon tree coast of that State. It is believed that Gen. Lee has received orders from the War department urging that "those captured must "be regarded as prisoners of of war." It is acid they will be disregarded by the authorities of South Carolina; that the same course will be pursued which Gov. Wise adopted at the time ef the John Brown trial, and that when South Carolina is done with the invaders the Cor.federate government can have them. Nothing shows a weak cause more surely than such threats. V:a Havana, we learn that the Confed erates landed fi'teen hundred men on Santa Rosa Island, their intention being to land five thousand and to attack Fort Pieken4,— The movement, however, was detected, and those who landed were shelled by vessels, from the Federal fleet, and driven off with great loss. The steamer Cosmopolitan has arrived at New York from Havana. The Spanish fleet was nearly ready to sail for the Gulf of Mexico. Intelligence from Mexico shows n continued state of anarchy in that country. The City of Manchester, from Liverpool and Queenstown, on the Gth and 7th inst., passed Cape Race on Saturday evening with four days later news from Europe. Ths convention between England, France and Spain, concerning intervention in Mexico, was signed at London on the 31st ulr. Ac tive preparations were making for the ex pedition. A surmise of ulterior designs is again afloat. The London Times finds fault with Secretary Seward's despatch to Tiird Lyons, and ridicules his circular to the Gov ernors of the States concerning fortifications. The London Herald and the Post are also occupied with the correspondence or Lord Lyons and Mr. Seward. It is believed that France requires a large loan. The cunti neatal news generally is not important. We hear from Western Virginia that on the 10th inst. General Cox's Brigade crossed the Kanawha and Kew rivers, and drove the enemy three miles back In m their positions. General Benham had a sharp skirmish with them, which was ended by the fall of night: - the rebels took advantage of this respite to retreat; as soon as General Benham discov ered their movement he set out after them, but after a chase of twenty-five miles through a drenching rain gave up the pur suit. The San Jacinto, with Messrs. Slidell and Mason on board, on arriving at New York was ordered to Boston where the prisoners will be transferred to Fort Warren. The embarkation of Gen: Butler's brigade at Boston has commenced: 1019.-The cotton can't be removed from the potation of Louisiana for the want of rope and bagging. FatNen AND GERMAN: WOMEN.—The Paris Figaro is responsible for the following • amus'ng parallel between feminine.human ity in Franco and Germany: The French woman dresses, the German clothes herself. The Getman walks, the Parisienne lutes. German women are either handsome or ugly; Parisiennes are charming; none of them are ugly, norare they even beauti ful. 'Whether excited or listless, the look of the German woman is always frank and honest. What delicious abysses are the eyes of the Parisienne! As Count de Gram mont once remarked: '•ller eyes always seem to be doing something more than mere ly looking at you! The German say yes ur no. With the Parisienne it is never quite yes, nor altogether no. The German will wait for you at the trysting place ten years; the Parisienne ten minutes. Parisi enne is superlatively knowing; the German is content with the admiration of one; the Frenclt•woman longs to be admired by all, and would rather give up her betrothed than the public. The Pal isicnne is an ar tist, the German a woman. Moral—love in France, marry in Germany. Columbia Lumber Market Panel Board: , and Plank, NV. Pine, $311.00 Ist Comm.
