respectfully report, that we saw the two Safes origi
nally agreed upon by Farrel St Herring, and I:vans &
Watson, placed side by aide in a flanace. viz:
The Safe in use by the Paymaster of the Philadel
phia and Reat'ing Railroad Company, in his office at
Reading. manufactured by Farrel, &. Herring. and
the Safe In use by H. A. Lantz, in his store, manu
factured by Evans A Watson, and put in books pre
cisely alike.
The fire was started at Si o'clock A. M., and kept
up until four cord. of green hickory, two cords dry
auk and half chestnut top wood were entirely eon
stoned. the whole under the superintendence of the
subscriber., members of the committee. The Safes
were then cooled off with water, after which they
were opened. and the book, and papers taken out
by the committee and sent to H A. i..1117.h1 store for
publie examination, after they were first examined
and marked by the Committee. The books and pa
I pers taken Irvin the Safe manufactured by Evan* and
Watson were but slightly affected by the intense hcAt
while those token from the Safe munufuetured
by Farrel, nod Herring were in our judgment dam
aged fully &loco per cent. more that. those tuber
