D/SCOTERT OF A NEW /Sidi:STD.—On the
ISfiter voyage to Australia of the Ben Nevis,
Capt. Heron, in ltttitttde 44° 41 1 south; and
in the same longitude as the Crozets, came.
unexpectedly upon land. Supposingit Waa the

A FATAL OCCUICEENCE.-A young man
named Elisha Bogle, was found dead on the
ice, alongside the sloop Dusty Miller, at Key
port dock, N. J., on the 4th instant. The
sloop had been robbed on Friday night, and
the captain, Wm. Crane, had set a loaded
gun in such a position that the opening of
the slide would discharge the contents into
the legs of the person opening it. Bogle
had apparently stooped when pushing back
the slide, the entire charge of buckshot en
tered his heart, killing him instantly.
QUITE COMPLIMENTART.-A correspondent
of the Louisville Times says, a few days
since Lieutenant Governer Ford, of Chio,
visited New York, and put up at the Astor
House. Greely called upon him and found
him in his room, in bed. After talking a
short time on the general topics, Greely ex
claimed—" Governor, you are not quite such
a looking man as I expected to see:" "If
you are more disappointed in my appearance
'than I am in yours, I commiserate you," re_
plied the governor.

lkittaums.—The mummies of Egypt are
sometimes quarried by the Arabs for fuel,
and, whether those of the Pharaohs, their
wives, their priests or their slaves, are split
open and chopped up with the same indif
ference as so many pine logs. The gums
and balsams usbd in embalming them have
made them a good substitute for bitumi
nous coal; and thus the very means employed
'to preserve them have become the active
;agents for their dissipation.
FIRE AT STRACUSE.—The County Court
Houk at Syracuse, New York, wasdestroyed
