f olitai Which '• Horn " The Radical Republican papers are just now asserting that the expenses of the general government under Qrant,s administration, during the last year, were $1.61 per head for every inhabi tant of the United States. Let us examine this operation aud see if it contains any truth. A common laboring man, whose family consists of two adults and two minors, pays a tax to the general gov ernment, in the way of, tariff duties Which it levels on the bare necessities of life, in one year, the sum of $85,00. This tax alone would average $21.25 per head forcach member of his family. Now, if the assertions of the Repub lican papers are true, what has the Re publican party done with the balance, ■ $19.01 per head, which they have col lected off the people and not accounted for? Do they pretend to say that it costs $19.61 to collect sl.6lfrom the laboring men of this country ? Do they indmit that they have been stealing $19,61 out of every $21.25 they have been collecting? They must take one of the “ horns of the dilemma,’’ and we care not which one. In either case, it either proves them to be Incompetent or thieves, and totally incompetent to manage the affairs of the government. Invented Outrages. The rascalities of (Governor Holden, of North Carolina, and his confederates who fill tjie atmosphere with lies, in his interest, are too much for the New York Tribune. It thus demands an explanation of a piece of roguery prac tised on it: "We have a word for Governor Holden and Senator Abbott. Just before the .North Caroli na election, wp printed a letter from Judge Tourgeo, concerning the Kn-Klux outrages In that State. Certain very startling statements were made In It, which, b..t for the respectable signature, would have been universal)!* scnvfetl Judge Tonrgee promptly wrote us, complaining that the tlgurea ho had given. In enumerating cases of outrage, bad been Increased tenfold by the addition of a cipher to each, converting ten intoa hundred etc. Now. we printed the letter precisely as Governor Holden in person, deliv ered it to our correspondent, and uh the corres pondent understood that Governor Holden had received it from Senator Abbott, to whom it was addressed. We. submit to these gentlemen, that they have allowed too long a time to elapse without, explaining to us how the disgraceful garbling occuired. IV o should'have expected them to bjpas indignant as we were ourselves ut the fraud practised upon us, and to bo prompt in exposing the forger who abused their trust (in copying the letter) by pulling Into Judge Tour gee's mouth monstrous assertions wnlch he never dreamed of uttering! ' Governor Holden ! who garbled the letter which you gave our cor respondent r* UP AND DOING I The evenings are becoming longer and cooler, and the time is at hand when the Democracy should begin to make a real, earnest move. The questions to be asked in every district in the county are: Is our organization as thorough as it is possible to make it? And are the people thoroughly awakened to tho im portance of this fall’s election? If there be any doubt on these points; the duties of the leaders become perfectly plain. Look to it, then, and see that nothing is left undone that will servo to achieve an honorable victory. Organize!-^We advise our Demo cratic friends throughout the couuty to call meeting- in every township at the earliest possible moment. Arouse for the fight ! Throw out your banners, and by your works show to the common enemy that you are in solid earnest. Plenty of speakers are willing to be heard. We trust every Democrat will at once begin to work, and work with a will, faithfully and earnestly to the night of the 11th of October. Bimembeb, That the vote of one White man, changed from the Radical to the Democratic side, kills the votes of two negroes for the Radical ticket. There are about four hundred negro voters in Cumberland county. A change of five voters in each ward and town ship in th# county, from the Radical to the Democratic side, will neutralize the entire negid vote in the county. Re member this, and act accordingly. Kt.UISTKII AT ONCE 1 It is not too early for those who are not sure they are upon the registry lists to attend to the matter tit oncei There are more names left from the lists than one would Imagine, and yours may be among those who have been missed. See to it at once that you are registered, and that your name is correctly spelled. A very little trouble now may prevent much trouble at the polls, and perhaps may be the means of preserving to you the elective franchise. . Remember, Freemen 1 That a vote for the Radical ticket is an endorsement of the fraudulent Fifteenth Amend ment, as well as of all the corrupt acts of the present weak-kneed National Ad ministration. A vote for the Democra tic ticket will bo a condemnation of Grant and the hosts of "loil” thieves by whom he is surrounded. By defeating the corruptionists now, their utter anni hilation in 1872 will be a comparatively easy matter. We can and we must do It. We have the numerical force, and all that is requisite is to bring it to the polls. ' The London Himes abounds with sympathy and good will for the French republic, but, thinks the republic ought to make peace by ceding Alsace, Lor-' raine and the fortress of Metz to Prus sia. Thus is the alternative of dismem berment or war presented to born republic. The organ of British selfishness shows the same sympathy for Francein the hour of her calamity that it offered the United States during the rebellion. It had great affection for the American people, but constantly in sisted that the Union ought to bo dis solved; Such friendship as that of the London Times cannot be too highly ap preciated by the French republicans. Vice President Colfax recently wrote a letter to a Brooklyn paper an nouncing his intention of retiring to private life after the expiration of his prcsent.term of office. The Indianapolis (lud) Journal Bays that Mr. Colfax ex pressed this determination to his friends In that State some time since. The New York Tribune objects to the employment of the barbarous Turcos by the French as soldiers. The II arid re torts that theTurcos are “colored troops” of the same raco as those who, according to the Mbvne, “saved the Union,” and that what is sauce for the Confederate goose should bo sauce for the Prussian gander. ' A Degenerate Bon.— A son of the late Stephen A. Douglas, who believed in White Supremacy and negro inferl ority, is a henchman of the miserable negro-equnllty-dog, Oovernor Holden, of North Carolina I .This Dougins is said to be one of Holden’s vilest tools I Mailroalra.
