our columns last week, not,’ as, some
hirelings have, falsely’ said, to gratify,
disappointed ambition, but in comply
ancewith what we believed the major-i
■■ ity of the party demanded. Our county
had.been grossly insulted and
and honest-Democrats Were not ip a
humor to endorse and applaud the man
who was instrumental in forcing this
insult upon them. Beyond question,
Mr. Haldernan is the wily man in Cum
berland who hits.the face to ask for a
nomination against the solemn protest
of the people of the county in-which he
says ho resides. There' is not a case on’
record, sucli a tiling was, never heard'
of, as a man being nominated for Con

erywhere, a candidate for any district
nomination who failed to carry Ms own
county was no longer thought.of by any
one—he-was considered out of the field.;
Mr. Haldernan, when lie takes his spat
in Congress, will he the only mah.it)
that body who made a nomination and

of his own immediate constituents.
But, we are digressing. ’ ■" w
We have placed the name ofMr. Hal

our pwn of any oilier man’s political
aspirations will- swerve the old Volun
teer a hair’s breadth from its allegiance
to (he party whose principles it ha
espoused and defended for fifty-seven
years. We arc no grumbler—no mourn-

died. -We look, at. things as . they are
'and not as we would have them. The
Democrats of lids county cannot,, if
spems, (do what they may}, secure the
man of their choice.to represent them
in Congress.- So licit. Under the cir
cumstances we must do the best we
can, and ail we can do is to recognise
the nominee of Yorkamd Perry. “Let.
us have peace.” ’ .
Tue Shippensburg Sentinel lias been,
so long in,tlie habit ot misrepresenting
ns that it lias become a chronic disease
with it. It says that wo assorted in the
Volunteer that “ fifty or sixty of his
(Bratton’s) friends have called at his
office and demanded him to run i'nde
pentlent.” We never used this language;,
and wo may hero remark that (he edi
tor or hireling who places words in
quotation marks and thus attempts to,
make it appear that they are'the words
of another when they are not, is capa
ble of any net of mcannes-.
