JOHN CAMPBELL, Chairman ■ summed Recreations.— The summer, I tvhich. to rapidly passing away, although I gI , Intensely hot and sweltering one, has I been spent by our people in a pleasant*, I laHonni onrt agreeable manner. Instead ■ 0 f rushing off to the sea sh)e,,or following ■ |)ip niultlfucle to the fashionable watering I jAnrea. where all is hurry, bustle and ■ confoplon, high prices-and meagre fare, I (liev f«»r the most part were content to re ■ main at home, satisfied with the pleasures I girded by our own beautiful and fertile I vidley. During the season, Hunter’s Riyi ■ wi* extensively patronized, and, numer- I oua were the picnics and pleasure parties I held at. that, delightful spot. Nearly all ■ {i, e churches of the borough held their I gundny School celebrations there, which I ivere largely attended, and where men. I wnnipn and children eqjoyed themselves I to Iheir.lienrt’s content. Short excursions I in Mount Holly Springs, Pine Grove, the I Meeting-house Springs, Doubling Gap, I Kingston, Sporting Green, and other lo I calities were also numerous, and those I who participated in them returned home I del touted with, their trip. I It is a matfei of surprise that so many I persons, following in the wake of Shoddy I mid Petroleum, annually betake them to the hot and over-crowded wat ering places, and then return home dis satisfied, to complain of their wretched entertainment. Our own valley has many delightful resorts, at which the pleasure seeker cun. at small cost, obtain all the comforts and luxuries that the heart of man desires. Here we have high moun tains, deep valleys, romanticstrenms, and many secluded spotsms vet almost, unex plored. The denizens of the'large cities are beginning to find mu' this fact ami to avail themselves of it. Every summer the influx of strangers to our valley Is increasing, and ere long tho hoau’ty of its scenery, tho health-giving quality of its waters, and Its-picturesque, and lovely glens will bo ns celebrated and as fnllv appreciated as are the beauties of Switzer land's far-.famed val© of Clmmouni. “The Breastworks.”—One by on» ho old landmarks of the borough are fast IsfippeaHng, or 90 much altered that the “oldest inhabitant” falls to them* Tho“Brenstwork9, 1 ’ at the north ern extremity of Bedford street, thrown up in revolutionary times as a defence against the British and Indians, has long: since been levelled with the ground, and [ Ini ml reds of our citizens know nothing of lUs site. Tile field whereon it waserected is now being built upon, and we see that Messrs. J. and J. Border have just bro ken ground ,unnu that historic spot, and will soon erect cwo # br!ck dwelling houses, they having sometime since built upon ii an extensive brick blacksmith shop. Im provements in thatseotioD of tile borough nreslemlllv on the-increase, and in a short time the old Breastworks lot, as well ns the adjoining fields, will be dotted with dwellings, shops and-business places. Very Sudden Death.—On Saturday aflernnon last, about 4A o’clock, as Mr. John Early, former proprietor of the Na tional Hotel of this borough, was trans acting some, business in InhofTs dtore, he suddenly fell forward, and in a very li'tth time breathed hi* last. His disease was an affection of the heart, to which he had for some years been subject. An Inquesi was held by Coroner Smith, and a ver- d l ct returned in accordance with, the facts Mr. Early was about 5S years of age, and was a man of apparently robust health- He was well known in this town and county, where lie was born ami raised. He leaves a large circle of friends ami acquaintances, who mourn his sudden and unexpected death. A New Chuhcii.— 'The corner-stone of n new church to be erected In Plainfield. in this county, was laid on Sunday lust. It is intended for the accommodation ol the body of Christians known by the de nominational title of the “ Church pf God-.” Thestructure will be of brick, and will measure 22 feet in width and -10 feet in depth. The building will cost about $2,000. An appropriate sermon was preached by Rev, John Hunter, of Carlisle. Rev John Rf>as will he the pastor of the nbw church. A large number of persons were in attendance to participate in the reli gious act vices. Camp Meetings.— Our Methodist and Evangelical friends have held their res pective Camp Meetings, the one at Red Barn and tiro other at Kingston. These were very large, thousands ol spectators,'hs .well as the regular worship era, being upon the ground during nearly the whole time of the continuance of the Camps, Much good was accomplished at these meetings, those who participated in the religious exercises expressing the con viction that it was “good to ho there.”’ Meciianicsuuro Zouaves.— This fine military company, under the command of Captain RocUafellow, and which had been for a'duy nr two encamped at Mount Holly Springs, paraded around town on M unlay, afternoon last. They numbered about forty men, rank and file, and are a Hue looking - body- of men. Their uni form, which is'that of the Ziuavo, is a very handsome one, and their marching and military evolutions were complete. Aurora Bouhaus- A bright display of aurora was visible in Carlisle on Friday evening last, between 8 ami 0 o’clock. A dense black cloud stretched from east to west across the truck of the aurora. Ii was a very beautiful sight, the northern heavens presenting a grand and magni ficent spectacle. The weather-wise say that this is indicative of cold weather. Another Pic Nxa.— Quite a large par ty of our citizens held-a pic nio at Sport ing Green, in this county, on Thursday lust. The weather was all that could be desired, the lads am) lasses had u gay old .time of it, and everything passed oil as “ merry as a marriage boll.” fionuKßY.—On Wednesday morning, ns Mr. GuLahal, who resides a few miles cast of town, was coming to market, he was stopped on the York road by two foot pads, who robbed him of ten dollars. Our farmers should keep a bright look out, as evidently there arc many petty scoundrels prowling around. The practice in vogue of washing pave ments at all hours Is a nuisance, which should he prohibited Beautifully black ened boots and spotlessly clean Ureases 01 ladles' are great autterera by the water spurted from hose used injihis connection. August Court. —Tho August term of tho Court of Q i u*ter Sessions, &c., for this county, commenced in this borough on Monday last. DisitONEST •Dumbstio,—On Tbimiiny last, Constable San no arrested a colored woman named Ann Cooper, charged with the larceny of some clothing from the res idence of George Zinn, E-q,, where she was employed aa a domestic. She was committed to the county prison. Arrests. —Our police have made quite a number of arrests within a week or two, priuci nally anil brenchea ■ of the peace. Among them Were a goodly number Of Uncle Sam’s men. In every case they were uum.nltced.ro prison. Bill Poster.—John Fought, ’a soldier of the late war, in which he was some what disabled, offers his services to the citizens of this borough as a bill poster, messenger, &c. As he is incapable of do ing a hard day’s work, lie will bo glad to post bills, circulate business notices, carry messages, run errands, ami indeed do. anything'by which be can earn an honest living. We can recommend Mr. Fought as being diligent, trustworthy and deser ving. Give him a trial. Standing Committee Meeting.— The Democratic Standing Committee met on Saturday last, and effected a per manent organiz ition by the election of tne following officers : ' Chairman— Henry K. Peffer, of Car isle. * -Secretary—Dr. R. R. Church, of East Pennsboro. Treasurer— Alf. H. Addams, of West Penm-boro. No other business of importance was .ransacted. Camt MeEl^ng. The Shiopensburg N'aivsnwya there is no truth in the report that the Church of God Camp Meeting ms been abandnied. The meeting will je held on Air. Immediately after the corner-stone will laid. Preaching in the evening by the Rev. 0. V. Krauth, D. D., of Philadelphia. Botli morning and evening service will he held in the Reformed Church.' Classical School.— Plicae of our cili /.t-iis who have boys to educate will do well to remember that Bt. John’s school for boys, nnder'tho charge of J. Everit Oathell, will bo opened on Monday, Sep tember Ist, IS7O. We need a good class!-* cal school in this neighborhood, and hope Mr. Catheil will meet with generous en couragement. Base Ball Madness.— With the mercury at one hundred and twenty-five ‘■»r thereabouts in the sun, how young non can find amusement in the game of case ball it is hard to say.’ Whut fun 'hero can be in batting and fielding and running one's self out of breath and working into excessive sweats, is a puz zle. No'liod carrier workshop hard as the oitcher of abase ball club during any *}ml of an exciting gatpe; yet there'is no hod carried that would not rather rest in some friendly shade, if ho could af ford it, than ply his vocation at two dol lars a day. The genuine base ball player will turn out the hottest day in the year io play n .game, .and to nluy a game means hard work. * Profanity Punishable’.— It seems not to be known to any considerable ex tent, that persons indulging in, profanity subject themselves to a line or imprison nenfc* Every uduit who curses and in cursing uses the name of either of the •Ime persons in the Trinity, is liable to tie fined sixty-seven cents for each curse, and every minor for each similar offence may be punished by a line of forty cents for each profane utterance. Failing tc meet these obligations adults can he Im prisoned for twenty-four hours for each offence and minors for twelve hours. If the law touching these cases were en forced here, the borough treasury would soon be overflowed with funds, or our county prison inadequate to accommodate the one-thousandth part of the offenders’ Tomato Catsup.—As the season is uow advancing for making this delicious table sauce, we recommend the following recipe: One bushel of Tomatoes, boll until soft, skin and skim through a sieve or cullender. Add one pound of brown sugar, half an ounce of whole all spice, htylfau ouuco of whole cloves, half an oun’lfe of cayenne one fable spoi nful of ground black peppoF, one quart of vluevar, and one pint of salt. Mix well and boll until half the quanti ty is left. Bottle witboutstmining. 801 l slowly and stir often. It will keep for yours. A Word forßoys.— My young friend did you ever know—can you call to mind a single case of —a person who, having his own way to makein the world, spent bis time in the street, in.billiard saloons, around hotels, or in any form of dissipa tion or idleness, to succeed in an eminent degree in any enterprise ? Look over your list of friends and acquaintances and note their course. Do vou not find upon examination that those, who to-day are men of influence and honor, were the youths who made the most valuable time, turning it to good account? and, on the other hand, do you not find those who stood at the corners with a cigar or pipe in their mouths, went from f bmi to worse, from worse to ruin ? tiadly must the au sweAe made—oli, tha it were not so— they have fulled. Will you unt profit by the others? Go not that way. Never be idle. Every moment of your time is a golden one; use it as such; improve the mind; fix your eyes on some noble object; be-ruen. The call is for men; will you not bo one of that num ber who can say—“ I am a man ?” . Coal Oil Explosion.—The Newport .News says: “An explosion occurred at Liverpool, Perry county, on Thursday of lust week, which came very near being fatal in’ its results. It seems that Win field* Campbell, of this place, who has been boating- for M. Hanzoll on the boat “ Kerseage,” went into the cabin, and filled a small lamp with coal oil and set the can on the hearth of a stove; he then it the lamp and threw the mutch towards the stove, but instead of going into it, it struck the cau causing an explosion im mediately. WfnfleM w«a burned -rvij seriously about the face and left arm, and tin* furniture in thecabin took fire, but was extinguished before much damage was done. Ho came home on Friday, and through the care of his mother he is getting along admirably well. A Curious Decision.— The Supreme Court of Pennsylvania has decided that, where by negligence, sparks from a loco motive set fire to a warehouse near a rail road track, the railroad company is liable for the dam.ige done by the Are ; but strange to say the same tribunal also de cides that if another house caught from the flames of the burning building set on lire by sparks from the locomotive, the owner of the said premises has no rerrie* dy. The railroad company, it was held, was only responsible to the first person, who by the negligence of the railroad company's servants had his property set on tire and destroyed.; but although the second sufferer was injured by precisely the same reason, because the fire kindled by the locomotive spread to him, he hud no remedy. Stamps. —On and after Sunday, Octo ber 1. United Bfates Revenue stamps will not be required on any promissory note for a Jess sum iban one hundred dollars, nor upon any receipt given for money or payment of a debt. Neither will stamps be required upon the transfer or assign ment of ahy mortgages when the instru ment has already been properly stamped. At this dale, also, will expire the govern ment taxes ovules, legacies and succes sions, passports mid gross receipts. The lax on rum and tobacco will be contin ued-. Singular Arithmetical Fact.— Any number of figures you wish to mul tiply by 5 will give the same result if di vided by 2, a much quicker operation ; but you**must remember to annex a cypher to the answer when there is no remainder, and when there is a remain der whatever it may be, annex a five to that answer. Multiply 4151 by five ami the answer will be 2,320; divide the.sum by 2, and you have 232, and as there la no remainder you add a cypher. Now take 359—multiply by 5, the answer is 1,7*J5; on dividing this by 2 there is 179- and a remainder; you therefore place a 5 at the end of the fine, and the result’ is again fc l ,795, Killed,—We learn from the Nowvllle Atonhaton Wednesday morning Eras mus Bush was killed near Green Spring school house. He was In the act of drawing the rubber of a wagon, ami by some means, not known, fell to the ground, the hind wheel of the wagon passing over his right shoulder and head, causing instant death. The deceased was from Virginia, and his body was sent there on Thursday for burial. Fish Culture.— Some Philadelphi ans, who Intend starting a large diary, ami also engage extensively in the cult ure of llsh. have purchased the property of J. W- Craig, Esq., at the head of the Spring, near Bhlppeusburg. We learn these gentlemen have bien negotiating for parts of the Big Spring, to pursue the same business—that of fish culture.— Trout, we presume, would be tbo princi pal llsh raised. These fish are Intended for the Philadelphia market. Moving ON.—The sum of thirteen thousand dollars was subscribed for the proposed South Mountain railroad, at a meeting on Monday of lost week, a fc Ctovereburg. •Tub Amended Bankrupt Law.— Tlie bankrupt law Ims boon amended b> a recent act of Congress in some few par*, licul&rs, which are worthy of public no tice. Provision is now made that the circuit judge, in cases of sickness,* ab sence or other disability of. the district judge, may make all necessary rules and preparatory to the final hearing in causes of bankruptcy. The law provides also that the provisions of that section known ' as the fifty per cent, clause shall not ap ply to such debts, from which the bank rupt seeks discharge, which were con tracted prior-to the Ist of January, 1809. In other words, a debtor whose assols do ’not pay .fifty cents on the dollar must now obtain the assent of a majority, in number and value, of those creditors oh-, ly whose debts were contracted since the Ist of January, ISO 9. A clause ol tW thirty-ninth section makes it an act of baukrupey that a person “ being a bank er, merchant or trader, has fraudulently stopped or suspended, and not resumed payment of his commercial paper within a period of fourteen days." Much dif ficulty has been found by the-courts in the construction of this clause, especially as to the meaning of the word “ frudu ienUy.,f All ambiguity has been removed by an amendment as.follows : “t)r who 'beluga banker, broker, merchant, trader, manufacturer or miner, has fraudulently stopped payment, or who has stopped or Ruspehded and nof resumed payment of his commercial paper within a period of fourteen days.” The bankrupt, law is improved by these amendments. The Cumberland Valley R. R. De pot.—The foundation of the long prom ised Depot building of the Cumberland Valley Rond has nt last been laid, and tlie.grmlnd plan ofthe proposed building le now lying before us. The brick build ing will have a front of twenty .two and will extend back eighty-four feet. In front will be a platform six feet wide, with a door opening into the drat room, which will beset aside foi the accommo dation of gentlemen; and from it there will be a door opening into the ticket office which comes next. The iadles ronin will join the ticket office in the rear, and will bo but a fraction smaller than the front room. Then will come a capacious baggage room and the usual compartments for the convenience of travelers. Along the whole of the west side of this building, and extending some distance beyond it to the south, wilt 'be a covered platform fourteen and a half feet wide, which will be under the same roof that covers the mason work—that is so far «s the platform is coextensive with the house. There will also bo an extension of the platform two ami a half feet be yond the roof, from which it will be an easy step to the car. The need of such an arrangementhaslongbeen felt, ami while this public want has not been supplied a moment too soon, it is with pleasure that we chronicle this provision for the no .cecities of traveleis. —Hagerstown Mail- Catharine Hummel, aged 14 years was arranged in the Court of Oyer and Terminer at Reading, lor the murder of au infant, child of William Ludy, about two .veara r oJd near Boyertown, on the 20lh of June.
