To the Young Democrac^.— In every
district of the county therd are some
young Democrats of superior intelligence
who might, if they choose, send us occa

; A t CHEERFUL Face.—There is nogreat
rir’pvery day virtue than cheerfulness.—
This quality in man among men is like
sunahju© in the day, or gen tie,-renewing
moisture to parched herbs. The light of
a cheerful face diffuses itself, and com
municates the happy spirit that inspires
it, The sourest temper mdst sweeten.in

landscape, as’the blues and morosent-ss

laughter. Be"cheerful; always. /There
is no path bu.t will be easier traveled, tin
load but will be lighter, no shadow 6n
or brain but will lift , sooner in
presence of a determined cheerfulness.
Preservation of- Ecus.—Among the
numerous receipts for the preservation of
eggs one highly recomimuded consists
in simply rubbing them over with lin
seed oil. Immersion in ; salt water or

op. 'lt is said that eggs ( kept three.pr

nearly, and are of excellent flavor.

How to hake Oo«l Drinking Wa
ter.—lce cold water is not heuitby, and
should ho avoided lu extremely hot wea
ther, as it has n tendency to bring on
sudden and dangerous diseases, which
often prove fatal. The inhabitants of
many tropical countries are accustomed
to keep water cool without the use of ice
at all. The means employed are very
simple. The water is kept in a porous
earthen jar, which is surrounded with a
wet cloth, and the whole apparatus is
suspended in a draught of air, away from
the direct rays of the sun. The evapora
tion of water through the pbres of and
from the outside of the jat keeps the in-
terior cool. If water preserved in this
manner is. pot quite cool enough to suit
thotasteofraodern teetotallers, who, like
veriest old topers, like to feel, what they
drink “all the way down," it will at
least be much cooler than that which is
drawn from the hydrant, and much more
healthy than pure Ice water. The exper
iment is simple, and it will cost but a
little to try it.

gan township, delivered the first load of
new oats at Dawton & Go’s, warehouse
last week. He represented the yield
to be very good,.and-the purchasers pro
nounced the grain an excellent quality.
Painful Accident.—A man named
Stendenrotlvan employee at Donnelly’s
Foundry, had his foot very severely
burned on Wednesday afternoon last, by
accidentally throwing.a small quantity of
melted metal on it. The burn produced
was very painful, but not of a serious
character.
Still Improving.—The-good work,
that was begun by our Council some time
sdnee, still goes bravely on. , Elevated
portionaof Orangestreet are being graded,

streets-will receive the necessary.atten
tion in a short time. Ou every side use

Personal. —John B. Bratton, Esq., of
Carlisle, Democratic candidate for Con
gress in this district, was in town on
Thursday evening last. In the evening
he was tendered a serenade at MoNul-'
ty’s hotel, by the.new band, through the
instrumentality of bis numerdus friends
here'to which he responded by a brief
address. Referring to the occasion, the
News says: “After the band had per
formed several airs, Mr. Bratton made
his oppearnhee and addressed Hie enthu
siastic audience in a few pertinent and
courteous remarks,” ami In conclusion
apUy adds that the Democracy In this
place appear lo be a unit for Bratton.”
Hon. R. J. Haldeman and lady were in
town on Monday evening, and were also
serenaded at the Sentinel office. Mr.

thanking bis friends for their kindness.
'Died From Exposure to the Heat.
—We omitted,. last week ,to notice the
death of Mr. Willitftu Meredith, a resi
dent of Southampton, township, which
occurred on Monday morning of that
week near his home, south of town. He
had been in town during the day and
evidently imbibing too freely of unheal
thy whiskey. Nothing unusual was no
ticed until when near his home a passer
by observing him Co be acting rather sin
gularly, went to him, but before reaching
Ills position Meredith fell insensible.—
Before aiiy medical assistance could be
produced he expired. The
exposure to excessive heat led to his
death.
Sad .Casualty.— On Wednesday lost,
Mr. Daniel Cllppinger, residing near
M owersyille, met with a serious accident
which may vet result in his death. He
was, by a’sudden movement of the horses,
thrown from the load of! hay on which
he was standing, bis head striking the
ground. He was rendered entirely sen
sible by the fall for a considerable length
