general nor very marked in localities
where they appear, with occasional
exceptions of severe freezing, While
the appearance of wheat is by no rnesins

ments show that the hay thus treated

tender, sweet hay is particularily im
portant for sheep and young stock in
winter, if it do not bring so much in

varieties have been introduced, but
none of which have attained the cele
brity ol (he Mercer, which was almost
universally planted for nearly half a
century, owing to its superior' edible
qualities ami productiveness. It may
he a hmg time before any one. variety
ol this valuable esculent to man will
attain the prominence oflhe iiohleJUer
cer, which although having had its day,
is still tlie favorite with a large number
ol people. .
Washes fob Pnurr Tubes.— Twice
a year at least, every fruit tree in the
orchard should ho .cashed with, some
liquid, strong enough to destroy the
eggs and pupio of insects, ami the roots
and spores of mosses mid fungi. In
using caustic lye, for the destruction of
hark lice, persons have killed their
trees, as sometimes the hark turns black
and peels oil' after the application of
I Ins wash, and the death of (lie tree fol
lows. Lime white wash is rcconimond
, ‘-’tl by some persons, hut it I- unsightly
and is disapproved by the most ex
iporienced iruit growers; soqi-suds are
■harmless, hut are 100 mild fur the pur
pose for which the application is re-'
qmred. The most suitable wa-Ii is a
solution of common sal-soda in the pro
portion of one pound of soda to a gal
lon of water. Bain water is the best
for this purpose, This wash will not
injure the hark, hut will kill the e.drg'

mosses, lie. It will remove dead hark
