vnew' and handsome furniture. It will
necessarily be closed for several weeks,
tttt.when it is opened we expect to be
boast of the handsomest hotel in
Cumberland valley. Carlisle has
long needed a first-class hotel, and when
;we state that this experiment of Mr.
Bentz will probably cost in the neigh
borhood of $30,000, the community will

Trimming Trees.— The present sea
son is the proper time to attend to this
work, before the sap begins to ascend
from the roots to the trunk and limbs, and
thus Insure a plentiful growth of shoots
and consequently an abundant folluge,
which as every housekeeper knows, Is a
very desirable thing around one’s dwell
ing during the sultry months of summer.
Next month will do for preparing and
'planting out young trees, but it is rather
top late for trimming. In this section
too little attention is paid to a proper
time for trimming, and too many prune
in the latter part of April anil in May,
when buds are not only ready to burst,
but even are open. We have found from
'purown limited*experience that this is
•the time to trim grape vines, and we nev
•er knew of one thus managed not to
flourish and bear abundantly. -
Still at it.— Tho velocipede mania
im coutinuee.- The young men have all
it bad, and some of the old ones have
developed strong symptoms. The com*
.plaint is said to come from Paris, which
accounts for its being so fashionable. —
the Parisians began eating horse
ileih, they fell back on the velocipede, us
. a means of locomotion* The velocipede
: jbas liberated the noble animal from har-
ness, and he may hereafter be converted
Into soup and steaks. Every yelocipe
dlst'is his own horse; he cun harness
himself up at a moment's notice, but if
he should drive himself to destruction, lie
*inlght<be arrested tinder tbo laws for the
prevention of cruelty to animals—the
.donkey being an animal. The velocipede
has many advantages over the horse;
.It don’t cost so much ; it don’t ext oats or
-shavings; it never gets the bots or heaves;
iIE doesn’t got scared and run off; it will
die down without being told; It don’t
/need shoes on, blankets; it don’t kick.—
'. 'The age to wbich a velocipede \vill pro-
Ibably attain, bas not been definitely de
c.ttermlned, but it is generally supposed
' tthut one properly constructed out of good
' material will last uutil it wears out.

. The Great Resort.—Last fall brought
a marvelous increase of business to tbo great
clothinghoUKGofPenuHylvanla—Oak Hull. There
were days when the sales of the concern touch
ed the lofty figures of tivetvc thousand dollars in
one day. This of course wus owing lu general to
tho prodlgeous efforts' put forth by Wunumaker

people In the matter of low prices and desirable
goods. But no small part of the credit is duo to
tho country people who seem to go en masse;

tho proprietors have no fears of not being able
to continue In tho favor and patronage of their

to please them so well this season that Oak Hull
shall become tho great “ Resort" of the country
