The Chinese Government having (through the
Hon. Anson Burlingame i eonoed.ul to this Com
pany the privilege of connecting the great sea
jiorts of UieEmpiiO by submarine electric tele
graph cable, we propose commencing operations
in (jhlna.uud laying down a line of nine hund ted
miles at once, between the following ports, viz:
Canton
Mucoa
Hong-Kong
Swnlou’
Amoy
Foo-Chow
Wan-Chu
Nliurpo
Hang Chain.
Shanghai
Total.
These ports have a foreign commerce of StK».«
OCKI.UOO, and un enormous domestic trade, beside
which we have the immense interim! commerce
of the Empire, .radiating from these points,
through Jw canals and navigable rivers.
The cable being laid. this Company proposes
erecting laud lines, and establishing a speedy
and trustworthy means of communication,
winch must command there, as every where else,
the communications of the Government, of busi
ness, ami of social hie. especially in China. She
has no postal system, and her only means now of
communicating information is by couriers on
land, and bv*steamers on water.
Tlie Western World knows that China isavery
largo country, in the mum donsiy peopled; Gut
few yet realize that she coutab « more than a
third of the human race. The t n i hues
made to her central authorities for taxing pur
poses by tiic local magistrates make her popula
tion /'bur Hundred and I'uitrh'vn Millions, unu tills
Is more likely to be under than over the actual
aggregate. Nearly all of these, who aiv over ten
years old, not only can hut do read and write.—
Her civilization is peculiar, but her literature is
ns extensive as that of Europe. China Is a land
of teachers ami traders; and the latter are ex
ceedingly quick to avail themselves of every
proffered facility for procuring early informa
tion. Zt 1h observed in California that the Chi
nese make great use ol the telegraph, though it
there transmits messages In English alone. To
day great numbers of licet steamers are owned by
Chinese mercnnnts.and used by them exclusive
ly for the transmission of early Intelligence, if
the telegraph we propose, connecting all their
scap'orts were now in existence, It is believed
that Its business would pay the cost within the
first two years of its successful operation, and
would steadily Increase thereafter.
No enterprise commends itself as In a greater
degree remunerative to capitalist*, and to our
whole people.- Itisof a vast national importance
commercially, politically, and evangelically.
*Srlbo stock of tills Company lias been- un
qualifiedly recommended to capitalists and busi
ness men, as a desirable Investment by editorial
articles In the New Yord Herald, VWlnmc. U’orW,
