Rkjiarkaulb Incident.— Some few weeks since, Mr. Michael Yeingst, of Dickinson township, lost a valuable cow, and advertised her. He hunted the country around, and bad about given her up for lost, when strange to say while loading straw, about three weeks after her disappearance, ho found her imbedded in the straw pile, perfectly sound and well, though somewhat weak. She was hist seen in tho barn yard when Mr. Yeingst was threshing, and it is pre sumed the straw fell around her so fast that she was unable to extricate herself. It seems marvellous that she did not suf focate or die of thirst. Narrow Escape.—Ou Wednesday last, while Mr. Jerry Noftsiuger was pas sing the corner of South and Bedford Streets with his team, the two horses slipped on the ice and fell, throwing Mr. Noftsiuger under them, who fortunately succeeded in holding them down un til ho was relieved by some men who were passing down South street. Crowded Put.— An interesting letter from our Harrisburg correspondent, giv ing nn account of the organization of the Senate and House, has been unavoida bly crowded out. £6s“* Charles Lobdell, associate edi tor of the La Crosse Democrat , was one of the victims of the late awful accident on the Lake Shore Hail road. He was on his way to Bridgeport, Conn., to bo married. Lamentably sad. American Sherry Wine.— This rich and delightful wine, made from the Wine Plant, by Mr. Joseph Hciser, North Pitt Street, Carlisle, is, beyond question, the most wholesome as it is the most delicious of our domestic wines. It is highly recommended by our physicians for its medical proper ties, and is at present extensively used in the sick room. Mr. Heisorhas man ufactured a considerable quantity of this pure wine, and has it for sale at $2 per gallon. Hall’s Journal of Health says, “there is no trouble in eating pork in cold weather.” We don’t dispute It-* but there is a good deal of trouble in get ting pork to eat this cold weather, at rul ing prices.- “ Canst thou not minister to a mind deceased, And, with some sweet, oblivious antidote, Cleanse tbo foul bosom of the perilous stuff, That weighs upon tbo heart?” Certainly ; Plantation Bitters will doit when nothing e’se will. General Hancock in New Orleans. —The following la an extract from a pri’ vnto letter from New Orleans : “ There is a very marked improvement in tho fooling of the people here as far as regardsqiolitics. The conservative, con ciliatory course of conduct thus fur puifcu cd by General Hancock, as well ns the re cent Democratic triumphs in the North, have softened very much the feelings of the Southerners in this city toward the Union and Northern people. General Hancock is certainly the most popular man in New Orleans at present; and, as an indication of tho change of sentiment, I am told by the great folks here that they, and more wonderful still, their wives, are going to open their houses to the General and his entourage.” Talking Dock —A story has been cur rent for some time in Washington to tho effect that, when inquiring individuals seek to obtain an expression of opinion on political subjects from General Grant, he invariably begins to “ talk dog.” The Tribune , of yesterdaj', gives the following specimen of the Genernl’snbility to shirk the question: An occasional correspondent writes us from Washington the following dialogue, which wo print as a good joke, without at all vouching for its authenticity : Inquiring Republican (to Gen. Giant) —Well, General, what do you think will be the effect of negro suffrage, fairly car ried out? General Grant—Have you seen Marshal Brown’s pups? They are the finest in the district.
