I=l The Fair. —The exhibition of “ the Cumberland County Agricultural Socie ty,” at their grounds, during last week, was one of the most successful fairs over hold in this county, both ns to the varie ty'of articles and the quantity of stock exhibited, and as to the crowds 0/ visitors in attendance at the grounds daily. The reports of the various committees, which will bo found in another column, arc so full and complete ns to'iender a further notice in our local columns un necessary, and indeed to do justice to all would render Such a notice far too exten ded for our limited space.. We need only say that the houses were crowded to their utmost capacity, while there were but a few stalls which were not filled with stock—the display of carriages and ma chinery was also fully equal to that of any previous year. The weather on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday was delightfully warm and pleasant. On Tuesday and Wednesday the grounds were well filled with visitors, but Thursday was the crowning glory of the Fair. The trains from the East and West brought thousands—all the cars were crowded, while many passen gers stood on the top, unable to get even istandlng room inside. The Fair Ground .seemed like a perfect sea of heads. It is ■estimated by the officers that at least ten thousand persons visited the exhibition during the day, and wo are satisfied that duriug the address of Mr. Greeley and the trial of speed there wore seven or eight thousand persons there. This was the grandest sight of the whole exhibition.—' As much as there is to admire in ingen ious machinery, in choice paintings, in products of the farm and household, In blooded stock—yet there is an interest which never tires in watching the faces and the various attiro of the thousands who pass and repass at a public fair. Mr. Greely arrived at ten o'clock on Thursday,.and delivered his address at one o'clock. The address was somewhat over an, hour In length, and gave very general satisfaction, Mr. Greeley has a genial face, and is a much better looking . man than hcris generally represented to be. His voice is clear, his enunciation distinct and pleasant, and his manner easy, if not graceful. His themo was an argument against largo farms, and in fa vor of more thorough cultivation and .the raising of a greater, variety of farm pro ducts. Ho dwelt at length upon the;ad vautages' of thorough cultivation, and' gave seventl illustrations of the extent to which the productiveness of landcan bo increased by under draining and thei ju dicious application of farm manure, gyp sum, salt, lime, &c. Ju many instances farmers had paid for their land and their labor in a single crop. A man could find sufficient scope for his own brains, and all ho could borrow, in fifty acres of land. It was a great mistake to make the booby of the family a farmer, while the bright er boys are sent to the large towns and cities or enter the learned professions.— Farmers would do well to raise more grapes, tomattoes, strawberries and small fruits, for they pay better and in the large cities find a readier aud’a less fluctuating market than grain and other staple pro ducts. He closed with an earnest appeal in bobaff of agricultural education. : The Leesburg Band and the band! afc tached to Sherry’s Now .York Therttr?, enlivened the occasion with some of their choicest selections. It is to be regretted that'Friday was such an inclement day, as it had been set apart for the general trial of speed. The trial for the County premlumof for-: innately came oft’on Thursdayaftemoon and the premium was won by Dr. Geo. S.
