avirafforaL pbbmsoaxd"%b«* roifiwok •vri- S Cf tilcavn, u oolcliruled English breeder if pigs, describes his management of them ns follows: , , ~ , “ Pigs cat the food much better when it is fresh. I give them a 'variety of meal, such as wheat, maize, barley, and what ever is moat convenient to mix togethei. I have it all wotted with cold water, ami then scald it witli boiling water, and sprinkle it with salt. IV hat m mixed one day is used the next, thus glying sul ilcienl time to allow the food slightly to ferment and cool sull intent y to> feed nit. This is my winter plan, but in the sum incrl mixali with cold water, and feed with cold food. Between meals I gao them whole maize, ami mangold wiuzcl or swedes cut small, a little coal and soil occasionally, and allow them plenty of clean water. "When pigs mo put up foi fatting, I hud nothing hotter to feed them with than barley mid maize meal mixed together into slops, water always kept by them and a little mangold cut for them occasionally. Tt is very beneficial to ■wash and brush them as often as conve nient. ' This is quickly done by experi enced hands, and will amply repay for the trouble. lam certain that the cotta gers would find their nigs fatten a great deal faster if they would wash and brush them, and feed them with warm food, in stead of with food all ice, and that they would be well paid for any little extra trouble it mightcause them. They should also bo fed two or three times a day. Good bred and well-fed store pigs will always consume the refuse which a bud-bred one would refuse.” Soil for a Vixevard.— The Northern Ohio and Lake Shore Grape Growers’ As sociation in its late report says: Contrary to the idea entertained at the commencement of grape culture in this country, it Is now tho opinion of a ma jority of rif/norcus that a my soli produ ces tho best wine, especially with the Ca tawba grape. Stiff clay is preferred.— Thesoil should bo dry, hence uuderdraln ing is often a necessity. Sandy soils may produce as fair clusters, but the quality of the wine is inferior. Gravelly soil is probably the next best. Clay crests that crop out of gravelly or sandy districts are excellent. Manuring is also discarded.— Most experienced growers now consider manure an injury when wine is the ob ject of production. The vine will bear abundantly a long time, and remain heal thy on a soil too poor for farming. Ma nuring may spoil a vineyard, wo re member a notable Instance, of tho truth of this in the vineyard which produces the far-famed Johannisbergcr, situated on the Rhine. A proprietor once had it heavily dunged, and tho quality was per ceptibly injured for many years follow ing, though the yield was increased. The wine makers state that the most of grapes grown on the upland clay soil is richer than that from tho flatter lands of the Lake islands, or from sandy soils. Seasonable Hints.—The frost has laid an embargo on the cultivation of the soil, but something may still bo done to protect fruit trees from damage from stock, rabbits, mice, etc. It is well to encourage the growth of low branches, as they shade the trunks from the rays of the sun, and also prevent the growth of suckers. If stock are al lowed lo browse in orchards they will de stroy all the branches within reach, In former numbers of the lFestenii?u ral wo have described various methods of projecting trees from the attacks of rab bits and mice. The most effectual pre ventive of their inroads is their extirpa tion from the orchard .and its vicinity. Arrangements should.be made for re moving surface water from around the trees, where it sometimes collects during thaws, and by freezing on the return of frost, causes serious injury to the roots.— Surface drains should be made in all parts of the orchard where it is possible for wa ter to lodge. Trees that have been trans planted lately require to be examined and straightened, if they have been bent by the wind. A mulch of short manure will be a great protection to the roots in winter and a promoter of their growth in summer. Long manure should not be used, as it encourages mice about the trees.— Western Rural. Tu.u.MXii 01-- HoJiSKs.—Tlieru are a few very .■mnjile euiiimon sense rules which, if followed, will commend themselves to the horse ns well ns to the trainer, viz; Ist.—Always/ccf kindly toward a horse, no mutter what ho does to yon, and con sequently never show “ temper." Re member the horse knows instinctively how you feel. 2d.—Never go near a horse if you are afraid of him ; the horse will know it and take advantage of it, before you acknowl edge it yourself. 3d.—Never undertake anything with a horse that you do not know you can car ry out. 4th.— 11 Make haste slow!//," teaching the'nnimal what you want of him, as a child learns its A-ii-C-s, one letter at a time, being sure he knows each simple thing before you attempt to teach anoth er ; add repeat lessons often. sth.—Howard each effort to do as you wish, whether lie means it or docs it'ac cidentally. Olh.—lie sure that it is your will and not ids that conquers every time. hollowing these rules, you may nmko a horse do almost anything, if ho has not been spoiled before you get him. Gas I'ar.—The use of gas or coal tar in destroying insects is well known to some of our readers. There is nothing that will more quickly kill orchard cat erpillars than a slight touch on a swab.— Cotton batting dipped in it and placed around the stems of trees, taking care not to get much on the bark, will prevent in sects from climbing; and some aver that they have thus excluded thecureulio—an imperfect exclusion, however, so long as these insects mount on their wings. Its preservative effects on wood are well known. Posts soaked in the hoi tar fora lew minutes, if quite dry, will become very durable, care being taken that the tar extends a little above ground. It has been used with success on those parts of hot and green houses liable to decay.— Tlie Gardner’s Month!// contains, howev er, a statement of P. Henderson of its de structive effects on plants when used as a coating for hot water pipes. The heat of the pipes expelling the acrid gases, in jured or destroyed in one instance plants valued at two or three thousand dollars, merely for the want of knowledge con tained in this sentence. Tar applied to other parts of the house not subject to heat, appeared to do no harm. Tin-: Irish Potato.—We would call the attention ol our American farmers to the luct that the Philadelphia Agricul tural Society has appointed a committee 01 three of their most competent members to examine into and report upon the new ana best varieties of the Irish potato, for the table as well as for stock.
