Wo amiin present to our readers, a- the
tiuio approaches lor (ranspiant in g, a te
vised list of Fruit''Trees, Vines, .fee., which
we can recommend for general cultiva
tion. One dozen variety of pours, and six
of apples, are aU-sulUeient, provided they
are the host adapted to the soil ami local
ity—a fact which each one, upon trial,
must judge for himself. Frequently, a
pear, or apple, ora grape, may do well lor
a few years and then deteriorate; or mav
do excellently well in one location,.and
notin another, though separated by a very
narrow space. In such ease it had better
be disposed of hv grafting it with more
reliable varieties. We have changed our
opinion respecting a number ot (mils
within the last, half dozen years, and yet
in some of the instances we are convinced
the fault waa in the location and soil:

Socxn Maxims in I’ak.mi.vii,—The
following remarks are from an old pamph
let which accidentally came into Lite
hands of a correspondent who has kind- j
ly sent them for publication. Tin y un
well worth remembering:
The gentleman of fortune, whose farm
is his amusement, may wail years for his
reward. The common farmer wants Ids
paydown. Plans of improvement have
been recommended, practicable indeed to
the man of wealth, hut wholly uninter
esting to tlie mass of fanners, because
beyond their means. They van adopt no
system which the /arm tUn/ will not
support. It is a maxim in husbandry,
that no mode of management is won it
pursuing, that will not give a prolil ; and
that is the best which will alibi'd the
greatest profit with the least labor and ex
pense.
Great- crops may be obtained at great
expense ; but if the labor and expense is
not remunerated, tlie crops themselves
will bo ruinous. The (jnestion is, not
how a great crop can be obtained Hut
how it can be obtained in a manner to
pay? It is not a valuable improvement in
husbandry to increase your productions,
if your expense is nVoportioiiahl.v in
creased. Tno great object is, to im-rea-e
the productiveness of a farm, so that tlie
expense may bear a less ratio to tlie in
crease. Hy purchasing more- laud, you
impose a burden on yourself dillicull lo
sustain. Jinny have been impoverished,
and not a few have been mined, by pos
sessing themselves of hind for wliiclt they
could not pay. Tlie intelligent fanner,
beforehepliingesintodebt, will nol fail to
attend to litis plain question. Will tlie in
come of (he intended purchase more titan
repay, the interest, tlie labor ami tlie
taxes? If not, you are better without- tlie
laud. The possession of more, laud than
can be improved is a tax upon the owner.
