    English Election Riots,
:%
Daring tho late Parliamentary election,
lots at the hustings were common through
ut the kingdom. , Tho proceedings at Car
sle, as described below, were not more vio
jut than of many other places :
“The nomination of candidates for the city
jok place’on Tuesday. A similar scene of
prom 1 , riot and conluaion has seldom been
•itnessed in the old Border city. Tho two
dberal candidates, Messrs. Lawsdn and Pot
jr, and the Conservative candidate, Mr.
Jodgson, were severally nominated. Mr.
Lawson concluded his address amid a perfect
shower of missiles, accompanied by tho most
terrific howling. Mr. Potter experienced a
similar treatment at tho hands of the mob,
pnd he concluded his address amid afusilado
bf powder and unclean tilings. *Tho riot,
however, culminated on tho appearance of
fhe Conservative candidate.. When- Mr.
lodgsoii presented himself to the crowd tho
bprour became so terrific as to threaten se-
Hcus consequences. Some oho in the crowd
discharged u pistol, and stones beginning to
supply the place of soot and ochre/&c., blorfd
was drawn in several parts of tho crowd.—
[The Mayor, after frequently retiring to the
town hall for momentary slfelter, directed tho
police to clear tho space in front of the bust*
tigs- The pqlico endeavored to do so with*
gout effect, and tho rioting continued, during
rwhich it was’iinpossiblo for Mr. Hodgson to
Jobtain a hearing. The Mayor then called
£for a show of hands, w hioh ho announced to
in favor of. Wim Nicholson Hodgson and
Potter. This announcement roused
fi’the ire of tho multitude to the estremest
and tho hustings was almost iirnnedi
lately cleared by missiles, the favor of the
*|lnob being showered with particular aim at
£phe Mayor, who, with other gentlemen on the
g-'liustings, was covered with powder of all col
ours —blue, yellow, white and green, Tho
I ""‘candidates wore pitilessly , assailed * heavy
bags of whiting and soot coming repeatedly
in faces, afad but for tho shelter of
strong and friendly umbrellas, it muab have
resulted in serious personal injury. The
usual vote of thanks was not proposed, it be
ing the first thought of every one - to escape.
The proceedings throughou t wore.of the most
riotous and unseemly character, a constant
nhowop of colored powder-bags, soot-bujis,
potatoes, rotten eggs and stale butchers' offal,
being poured upon the candidates and their
friends. The speeches wore in consequence
cut snort, all attempts at dislodging tho
‘‘roughs’' being unsuccessful. In fact it was
the most disgraceful exhibition ever witness
ed in Cumberland."
