. Mr. Sherman .has a history worthy efmen
tion, Five years einoo he commenced -with
little capito! and.hard manual labor to- seek
for oil in Pennsylvania. He'sank five wells
all-of which are failures. This exhausted
-his fends but he did 'not despair He. tried
again—pawning his watch andololhiugcven
—to - get means to go bn with another well.
fhis.well, before completed, reduced him to
poverty, and yet he managed Ito sink his
well with his own hands until he struck oil
rn such large quantities as to make famous
■over the world the Sherman well. This well
flowed at first 5,500, barrels per day, and
nv.eraged forevera year a flow of 1,500 barrels.
About this time he sold the well for $2,-,
800,000. Since that time by- judicious pur
chases and sales has added to his capital un-,
nl be is now reported worth $7,500/00, all in
cash end equivalent stocks outside; of oil
lands and oif companies. Mr. Sherman is
nbout 50 years of ago and still in bachelor’*
hhssrr-such as it is—and contemplates going
to Europe in June where heezpcots.'ti spend
■ft few years. Ho has ho brother or outer or

Terrible Effect* or a Qoarrrl Between
HcSband and Wife.— Ferdinand Evorsbaok
nnd his wife Ernestine, both Germans, resi
ding in Philadelphia, got into » insTrol on
Tuesday night, which resulted in a desper
ate fight, which attracted to their residence
an excited crowd. A policeman was the first
to enter. Everything inside was (bundle be
m disorder, showing that n terrible stJruggle
had taken place. On the floor lay the hus
band, with n severe wound in one o( (Ms tem
ples, from which blood was running freely
, into a pail. At his side was a bloody hatchet.
In'one ot the upper rooms the wife was dis
• with a number of scalp wounds
Neither of them was able to give any ao
count of the origin of the occurrence. Both
wrero removed to the Pennsylvania Hospital.
It was believed that the husband could not
survive his injuries, while the wife also
seemed to be dangerously hurt.
ID” Democracy is looking Up; From States
whereat the last elections,.Republicanism,
rode down all opposition, and where. Demoo-,

buried beyond all-hope of resurrection by the
insane murder on of our country’s' peace—it
is. like truth, rising, to new life. In Ohio, in
the State of New York, in Indiana, and even
in Maine, there are pnrtentious signs that
with the dawn of pence the party'of the peo
