increase of funds, and asked for a statement

the employees of that association. In partial
eoly there was received a financial report of
Ilia western dopartment.of that orginization,
covering a report from September 1,1861, to
January 1, 1864. From this report it np
nesra that, in that branch, the sum of $321,
bO5 42 had been expended. Of this $93,592
56 was applied to pnrohase of supplies, and
t l,e remainder expended in distribution of
those supplies. 'Under the head of “oxpen
,,» *27,447 72 was absorbed under the
head of “publication,” &0., $5,283 88 wasab
.orbed, and the amount of $ 24,069 15 vras
absorbed in the'work of “general inspection,'’
being no aggregate of $56,300 75 for those
three items alone. In the “Directory” the
dim of $13,071 53 was spent for “compensa
tion" of officers or agents and in the "Relief
Department” the quin of $13,224 50 was aim
°'ln it cost $227,572 86 to place $93,-
592 53 worth of supplies at the disposition of
Hie soldiers, notwithstanding the large amount
of transportation which was performed by
the government, and so not paid far by the
commission. Is this statement to be considered
us evidence tending to show the economyot
manogeraen by this associationT
The Intelligencer makes the following sig
nificant statement:
“We,learn that .the Eastern Department of
the Commission, which has its headquarters
in this city (Washington,) and in
appropriations have been made on a greatly
noire extensive scale, baa never published
nny financial report since the date of its or
ganization down to the present time.”
The National Intelligencer is_ not a party
paper, is edited with extraordinary ability
end care, and commands the respect and con
fidence of all who read it, from the highest of
ficers of the government to the humblest in
dividual.
With such evidences ns these of the ineffi
ciency, if hot corruption) of the Sanitary Com
mission, it is simply lolly for those who desire
to aio the soldier to commit their gifts to its
care. When it is.recolleoted that this insti
tution. is presided over by a Beverned who
denies the divinity of his Saviour, and that
in general it is made up of such disinterested
patriots ns FoUnet and Seedy indiviuUttln in
quest of plunder, it is not to be wondered at
that the suffering soldier complains in the
bitterness of hii disappointment that he does
not receive what is sent. The demorlization
always attendant upon the large expenditures
of war, naturally gives rise to every species
o' corruption and swindling. These “Com
missions” are not legally responsible to any
authority and can therefore practice rascality
with impunity. The way to stop such wrong
action is to withhold support. Send your
gifts directly to the soldiers.
