FIGHT ON JAMES ISLAND
Conflicting Rebel Accounts
-&EBEL VICTORY CLAIMED
Fortress Monroe, June .23 — 8J A; M.
The motamora arrived from City Point into
last night.
The Richmond papers of Saturday contain
n brief account'of a bloody'battle fought on
Monday lost, on James Island, betjveen five
federal regiments and a battery of Parrot
guns, and parts of four confederate regiments
and a battery. Tho battle lasted all day,-
with a heavy loss oh both sides. 1
The'Charleston Mercury feared the battle
would bo renewed the next day, and ex
pressed apprehensions for the safety of the
city in consequence of the great exhaustion
of tho southern troops and the loss of many
officers.'
Generals Evans and Pemberton-had 'conn
plimonted tho rebel troops for their bravery
in standing up under the heavy fire of shells,.
<to., from our gunboats and batteries.
The fight took place four miles from
Charleston, and from the tone of nn editorial
in tho Mercury, I should think the rebels have
been cut off from retreat; from James Island
by our gunboats. If this should- be so',
Charleston must soon fall.
FROM MEMPIIIS--

Charleston road, for Corinth, with a number
of teams arid wagons, and ono com pany of the
Fifty-sixth Ohio,, besides several officers,
Were attacked by a lago force of rebel caval
ry yesterday, about twelve miles from this
city. Tho rebels destroyed the locomotive,
burned the ears, and killed ten- of oar men,
and captured several of our officers, includ
ing Colonel Kimiy, Majors Pride and Sharpe;
the Railroad Superintendent, and Captain
M’Mleliaol, of Grant’s staff, Who was. taken
prisoner at Shiloh, just exchanged.
General Grant has restored the editorial
control of. tho Aryus to the proprietors, with
notice that itwillbeatonoe suppressed should
it contain anything offensive to the Govern
ment.
The locomotive captured yesterday was tho
only one on tho road at this point.

The Rebels commenced tho firing, which
. was at once returned by our forces, and was
kept up without intermission until near seven
o’clock, our loss in, killed, and wounded being
trifling, when we 1 consider the-rapid and suc
cessive firing, and the time occupied in the’
engagement, while that of tho Rebels must
bo very heavy,, from, the fact that several of'
our best batteries were on hand and succeeded,'
in doing good and. efficient service: '.
During the afternoon, Gen. Fits John; Por
ter marched to tho relief of Gen. McCall, his
reinforcement coming in just at the nick of
time, and' enabling, us to maintain-our posi
tion during.the night against an,overwhelm
ing force; even, with, the; addition, of tliesare*
inforcementsi.
This morning; however; the; commands- of
Gens. McCall and Porter, fell back from' tho
position 1 they held during the night, and
halted' and formed a lino of battle some three
miles in the rear of, and near' to the house of
the Rebel Gaines.. This- retreat, if it may
bo so called, was by no means a 1 forced one,
but was dono voluntayily, arid in all probiv
btlity to l secure 1 a better position; where 1 they."
could bo-nearer the main body, and hence be
more: readily reinforced,, should, they, need
them; i
• This* retirement was d'otie- ih a) quiet and’

tho first, Second and Fifth Pennsylvania Re
serves; who promptly returned thofire of the
Rebels, who: were following.
.. These 1 portions of tho two armies'are now
face 1 to faee; and 1 they may at 1 any moment
commence 1 anew 1 thr’ongagoment. ,
During the fight yesterday, one company
of the First Pennsylvania Buektail Reserve
Regiment was entirely surrounded, and all
were taken prisoners. Some' few however,

I leave 1 tllejr dead and wounded comrades in
the hands of the enemy.. Among the num-,
her in this regiment who were wounded’ we
gather the following
€bl. Irwin and Flout. Welsh of Cb. K.,
Captain Irwin, however, managed to effect his
escape- This regiment covered themselves
with -glory, winning from their officers the ,
highest meed 1 of praise ; from early in the af
ternoon iratit this morning, they were aeti vo-
b r r c , n £ fl fiod and in the thickest of the fight.
The Pennsylvania Reserves are deserving,
too, of their well earned praise ; throughout
the tight they stood their ground against ati
unequal force, and in- front of a galling fire.
Their conduct upon this occasion does honor
to the Keystone State. • 1
