' World/’ HARPER’S MAGAZINE. Tbo mtaf
, popular Monthly iu the world. 1
ATcio York Observer,
-i’ No Magazine in Europe or America is sol well
known,* none has lialf as many readers; and, wo
inay safely say, none has received so largo a tribute
of admiration from the cultivated classes, that de
light in a healthy, diversified, elevating periodical
literature. It is the foremost Magazine of the day.
The fireside never bad a more delightful companion,
nor the million a moro entertaining friend,, than
Harper's Magazine.
- Methodist Protestant (Baltimore.)
Twenty-five cents buys'it—the cheapest, richest,
Arid most lasting luxury for the mouoy that wo
know. Throe dollars secures it for one year, and
What three dollars overwent so far? Put the same
amount in clothes, eating, drinking, furniture, and
how much of a substantial thing is obtained? If
ideas, facts; and sentiments have a monetary value
*—above all, if tbo humor that refreshes, the pleas
antries that bring a gentle smile, and brighten the
passage of a truth to your brain, and tho happj
combination of tbo real and the imaginative, with-
out which no one can live a life above the animal,
are to be put into the scale opposite to dollars and
'cents, then you may bo certain, that if Harper were
throe or four times as dear, it would amply repay its
price.. It is a Magazine proper, with the idea and
purpose of a Magazinorr-not a book, not a scientific
periodical,-nor yet a supplier of light gossip and
chatty^anccdotcs— but a Magazino that takoß every
form of interesting, dignified, and attractive litera
ture in its'grasp. —Southern Times.
The volumes bound constitute of themselves a li
brary of .miscellaneous reading, such ns cannot bo.
found iu the same compass in any other publication
that has como under our notice. —Ifoston Courier,
Unqcstionubly it is the beat sustained work ol the
kind in the language; that is to any, in tlio woria.
The.splendid monthly essays from the ISditors Ta
ble are above price, : •
/■ NY. Christian Advocate and Journal.
Wo must refer in terms of eulogy to the higji tone
and varied owiitk-noios of Harper’s Magazine, a jour
nnl with a monthly circulation of about 170,000 co
pies, in whoso pages aro. to bo found some of the
choicest light and general reading of the day. We
speak of this work as an evidence of the American
people, and the popularity it has acquired is meri
ted. -Each number contains fully 144 pages of in
structive matter, appropriately illustrated with good
wood-edts; and U combines .iu itself the racy month
ly and the moro philosophical quarterly, blended
with'the best features of the daily journal. It has
groat power in the creation anddiseommation of a
love of pure literature.

BALD ABFI> GRAV.
MANY, since the discovery of Prof-Wood,
liuvp attempted not only to imitate his restora
tive, Imt profess to have discovered something that
would produce results identical; but they have all
come and gone.-heimi'carried away by the wonder
ful results of Prof.'Wood's preparations, and hare
been forced fo leave the field to its resistless sway;
Read tho following:—
Bath, Maine, April 13th, 1859.
Pnop. 0.. J. Wood 1 Co.: Gents.:—Tho letter I
wrote yourn X-Ssfi concerning your valuable Hair'
Restorative, and which you hare published in this
vicinity and elsewhere, has given rise to numerous
enquiries touching the facta in tho case.. Tho en
quiries arc, first- is it a fact of my habitation and
name, ns slated in the communication; second, is it
Into of all therein contained; third, does my hair
still continue to ho in good order and of natural col
hor? .To all I can and do answer invariably yds.—
My hair is even belter than in any stage of my life
for 40 years past, more soft, thrifty, and better tel
ored ; tho same is true of my whiskers, arid the oh
ly cause why it is not generally true, is tit tit the sub
stance is washed off by frequent ablution of the face,
when if eared were used by wiping the face in close
connection with the whiskers, the same result will
follow as' the hair. I have been in the receipt of a
groat number of letters from all parts of New Eng
land, asking mo if my hair still continues to bo good ;
as there is so much fraud in the manufacture and
sale of various compounds as well as this, it has, ho
doubt been basely imitated and boon used, not only
without any good effect, but to absolute injury. X
have not used any of your Restorative of any account
for some months, and yet my hair is as good as ov
er, and hundreds have examined it with Surprise, as
I am now til years old arid not a gray hair in nr.
head or on my face: and to'prove this fact, I scad
you ri lock of my hair taken off tho past week. X
received your favor of two quart bottles l;ist summer,
for. which lam very grateful: I gave it to my friends
and thereby induced them to try it, many were skep
tical until after trial, and then purchased and used
it with universal success. I will ask as a favor, that
you send me a,test by which lean discover fraud in
the Restorative, sold by many, I fear, without au
thority from you. A pure article will insure suc
cess, and I believe where good effects do not follow,
the failure is ■ caused by tho impure article, which,
curses the inventor of tho good. I deeni it my duty
as heretofore, to keep you apprised of. tho continued
effect on my hair; ns I assure all who enquire of me
of my unshaken opinion of its valuable results. I
