LOVE’S LAST QBIEF. BY FINLEY JOHNSON. Now faro tUo well, my own beloved, Death’s stamp is on thy brow, ~flis hand,is plucking from thy (Shooks, TUo blooming roses now : Ah I bitter, biltei is the pang, ' Dark fate lias left for me, ’ To know that soon the grave will Uillo, Thy loving form from mo. •Ah I little, thought this heart of mine, In pleasure’s golden hours. That they so soon would lade away, Like summer’s fragile flowers •, And as I pressed thy velvet cheek, And calmed thy loving fears, I little thought that I so soon, Should be in grief and tears. But ah! too soon the spoiler came And marked thee for his prey, And where he touched his withering hand, ■■ Soon faded to decay j ,Thou wert too fair and beautiful, Within this world to dwell, •And angels now have welcomed thee, ; Their anthems loud to swell. O, when they told this throbbing heart, ■That thou, alas! had died, I cursed the cold formality Which kept thee from my side. -But when I flew on love’s own wings, And by thy bedside prayed, "And wept to think that they refused To let me give thou aid. And as I stood convulsed in grief, I wildly o’er thee bent. And prayed and wept, and wept and prayed, ■ Until my breath was spent; 'And as I saw thee robed in white, In awe X held my breath, — ■My God 1 My God 1 I would have died,. To Woo thee back from death. But faro thee well, my own beloved, ‘ I know'that thou art blest. No earthly woe, no dream of pain, Shall haunt thy peaceful breast. Thou hast but fled to realms of bliss, A mansion to prepare, ■Where I shall join thee, dearest one, Thy endless joys to share. Big Trees in California. Tlio Big Tree forest, says the Bulletin, a pa per printed on the stump of the “ big tree,” is situated in a small valley surrounded by spurs of the Sierra Nevada, at th ■ source of one of the tributaries,of the Calaveras river, 15 miles flora Murphy’s, 25 from Mokelnmno Hill, 80 from Stockton, 80 from Sacramento, 30 from Columbia, and 24 from Sonora. The-grove and its immense trees were disco vered early in 1850, by hunters, whose accounts wore, considered fabulous until confirmed by ac tual measurement. A. T. Dowd, our present intrepid expressman to Carson'Valiby, was among the first discove rers: he was afthat time employed hunting game for the workmen of the Cnidn Canal Com pany’s works, which were iu course of construc tion. had wounded a grizzly, and follow ed him until he passed between the two “guards men,” (two trees that guard the entrance to the grove.) The immense size and height of those trees so surprised him that he lost sight of the grizxly, who made his escape into the dense uhder-grou-th. After stepping .the . distance around the base of the trees, he cast his eyes in a northerly direction and saw one yet larger, and whoso base he stepped, and found it to' be near one bundled feet in.circumference.' Hav ing lost sight, of the tracks of his grizzly he re turned to camp, when he related to his compa. njons his discovery of the big trees. They list tdned to his story with marked attention, until the conclusion, when they all, in one voice, ex claimed, “that’s a hunter’s yarn—got a good thing on old Dowd now,” One, more knowing than the balance, placed ills thumb-on his pro boscis, and with a gendo and graceful twirl of the Bugera, intimated that “ you can’t como.it over me with yonr timber yarn;. I’m too old in the Mississippi bottoms to believe any such d—d story as that.” . Dowd being rather sensitive, and hot wishing his word doubted, said no more about his big trees for six months, when another parly chan, ced to wander into the grove, and corroborate 1 all of Dowd’s statements. The valley in which , these 'trees gro found contains about 160 acres of land, and is 6,500 /got above the level of the sea. Overloo trees of tin's species are now stand ing, and are found within an area of 60 acres of the valley. Accordingto botanists, they belong to the family of Taxodiums, and have been just ly named Wasbingtonia Gigantea, and are, beyond doubt, the most stupendous vegetable product upon earth. The soil in the grove la a rich alluvial, very deep and loose. The growth of the forest is the Washington gigantea; bal sam fir, cedar, sugar pine, yellow pine, dogwood, hazel, and a luxurious and dense underbrush, strawberries, raspberries, and currants in great abundance, also, a rare plant, which tor rich ness of color surpasses anything in the moun tains. By some it is called the ice-plant; its bo tanlcal name has not as yet been given it, ] Mr. Honey, of Coulterville, informs the Mari posa Gazette that.a grove of big trees was dis covered the past week by a party of hunters from Garote, near Deer Flat, within one mile of the Coulterville and To Somite trail. About fqyty trees were counted—the largest of which is said to be 86 feet in diameter. This measurement is is probably someting of an exaggeration, but wO are assured that they are very largo, and, from their, proximity to the Coulterville trail, will be much visited. . Spam the Birds.— A correspondent furnjph es ua the following sensible and forcibly express ed,appeal in favor of the preservation of birds : •It is generally known that a new law for the better preservation of game and insectivorous birds, was enacted at the last session of the Leg, islature. This law is ■of great importance to farmers and in fact every lover of nature. There was a time in the “ken of man” when our woods and meadows were gladdened l with the songs and chattcrings of Nature’s beautiful little songsters. Once we were greeted in the . spring with thousands of happy innocent voic. es, whilst now we but occasionally hear ihe eve ning melody of some lono Kobin-Rcd-Breast, perched upon the top of some.high Iree, know ing hot but that he sin'gs his own requiem. As bards have decreased, thousands of insects once Vmknqwn in these parts have taken their place. Peach tree, apple trie, locust and pine tree bo rers are making sad havoc in orchards and for est. The caterpillars weave... their web and their young breakfast on the lender buds of choicest fruit trees unmolested. The milk wca vil; ih« Hessian fly. and ihousands of other in sects in myriads, have come, and rob the far mer of the reward of his ioil. Formers look to your interests. Drive from your fields, your woods and meadows, the lazy heartless scamps, and' the thoughtless boys who prowl around with gun in hand seeking to de stroy your protectors The little sap-suckers, the flickers, the wood-peckers, the larks, the blue birds, in short, nearly all the feathered tribe are your friends, and though some.may share your early apples and'cherries with you, it is only by way of honest compensation for the good done. Let us too protect our own game birds, and-instead of killing all oil, lot us seek to perpetuate the different species ofgame. Who would kill the mother of a brood of chick ens ? Who would kill the turkey when care fully preparing her nest, and who but a tieart less, selUsK creature would- harm the forest birds when in like manner raising their young ? ■D oiA Montez on Hoops.— ljolii IFontoz de livered a lecture at Newark, N. J., on Monday night, on “the comic aspects of fashion,” du ring which sho declnred the female fashions of the present day wore modern in comparison with those of former times, and the satires o( Juven al and other Koman writers were quoted to show the ridiculous and excessive practices indulged in by the Roman ladies. The hoop skirts of the present day are diminutive compared with those of former times, and instead of grumbling or laughing at them, themon ought to be thank-1 fu) that sufficient breathing room is unoccupied by them. The lecturer maintained them to bo a conducive to health, and much better for (ho Wearers than a load of petticoats. Many a woman has perished, she said, on whom, if tho Coronet’s Inquest had been held, the verdict wonld nave been “died of petticoats.” ' NOW FOR BARGAINS I Large and.
