THE HARVEST OP TROTH.
nr u. it. SPENCER
Dream. no more—the night is a cr
. Seize the sickle boldly ;
There's a miglity harvest of truth to reap.
And the winds are blowing coldly.
Seize the sickle! to the field 1
Harvest time is flying 1 ‘
The leaves have faded, nnc the flowers
Are all around us dying. **
Let.no weeds bo bound in ihe sheaf —
Throw them aside together;
Gather the true —the false may die
. Now as well as ever. .
The.night is o’er—dream no more—
Morn is breaking glorious ;
Gather in the harvest of truth,
O’er time and tide victorious.
A SilllLli.
<‘A smile; who will refuse a smile ■
The sorrowing breast to cheer?
And turn to love the heart of guile,
And check the falling tear ?
A pleasant smile for every face,
0! 'tis a blessed thing 1
It will the linos of care erase,
And spots of Iwnutr. Li-lnir.”
Thoughts on tuo i lining Year.
The lone murmur of the wind voice, at .thy
lattice,.reminds me that the year is dying.—
Thrc are no leaves of various hues, stretched
out over illimitable woods in which I may road
the destiny of the year,.but as the sunlight
crept down through the mass of buildings ami
fell upon, ihe street to day. it had that dreamy
hoe which tells us that the flower laden hours
ore nearly over. . -
How many will sigh, as the winds are now
sighing, while the year, with its beauty, passes
away. There wilt be many who, like myself,
will regret that so little has been accomplished,'
and will sorrow at wasted hours How few
will see the scroll of the .year rolled ,up and not
say, —'.‘ Alas I t hat I have let so many cluster
ing hours pass like dreams before me.” How
many of us fully realize that, we are one year
nearer the shadowy laud. Yet it is true: we
are hastening towards ihe darkness of the.
grave laud But though' we must call our mnr.-
tal life-chain one link shorter, we may. be as
sured. that ihe pleasant laud where flowers
bloom forever, where autumn winds, sigh not.
where decay never devastates, where beamy
blooms in unending, immortal perfection, is
nearer to us. ' •
Whatever may be.our regre;s at the miscon
ceptions of the passing year, will .be well if we
take from it a ,lesson for the year that, is aboui
to draw upon us. The past may ever serve as
a useful teacher, and many a useful, ennobling
lesson is to be learned from its pages ' If we
