telligent community; it offers a desirable situa
tion for tho teacher and student to vigorously
prosecute (heir studies.
DESIGN.
The Board of Trustees, composed of one Di
rectoi from each school district In Cumberland
county, have estnblshed (ho school with (ho de
sign (hat teachers may bo properly (rained and
qualified in the different branches, necessary for
a proper prosecution of their professional du
ties; and, to furnish ns far as possible, a model
of a well organized and efficiently conducted
school, to nil others who may desire to attend,
and prepare themselves for other positions in
life.
COURSE OF STUDIES.
Tho annexed list of studies is arranged in de
partments, without regard to the order in which
the various brandies will bo pursued, or to4hc
length ot time which may be devoted to them.
English Language.— The Elementary soumlsj

ding Rhetoric, the Art of Debate.
Mathematics. —Oral or Mental Arithmetic,
Written Arithmetic, Practical Mathematics,
Mensuration, Algebra, Geometry, Surveying,
Mathematical Geography, including (ho use oi
Globes.
Natural Sciences.— Descriptive and Physi
cal Geography, oml tho usu of (he Globes, As
tronomy, with illustrations .by Magic Lantern,
Maps, Planisphere. &c., Human and Compara
tive Physiology, Natural Philosophy, with ap
paratus. Elements of Chemistry.
Theory and Practice op Teaching. Intel
lectual Philosophy, tho study of School Sys
tems, Lectures on Education and tho details of
Teaching, Practice in Model Schools. Vocal
music throughout the course.
Students w ho do not design to become teach
ers can select their studies from tho above list,
and will be classified according to attainments.
Lectures on Teaching.— These lectures will
be frequent and practical, and comprehend tho
best modes of application of instruction and dis
cipline in schools. Although not relied upon
as ttie chief basis of Instruction; yet. in connec
tion, with a rigid study ot Text Books, their
utility is unquestionable, and fully acknowledg
ed. Tho catechetical mode will be discarded. —
Tho student will bo expected to master his sub
jects, and recite them In clear, ami well-chosen
language ot his own.
Model Schools.— There will bo three Model
Schools connected with tho Normal School,
which will bo at all times open for observation
and practice. Tho Normal student will bo fre

part in tho management, and to adapt a proper
system and method in his attempts to tench the
young.
While Fish,

Sessions will continuo three months. The tui
tion will he $6 per three months, Including the
use of apparatus, Ac., payable in advance to J

No deduction made for absence. Books, Sta
tionery, Ac■, will bo furnished at Philadelphia
retail prices.
Good hoard can bo obtained in respectable
families at $2,26 per week, Including all except
washing. The pupils will frequently be visiter
by Ibe members of the Faculty, and a caro ox
erclsod over them at nil times.
CONDITIONS OF ADMISSJON.
Male pupils must bo sixteen \enrs of nge, and
female pupils fifteen. Satisfactory evidence of
good moral character mnq| bo furnished, and
(he pupils must have healthy constitutions.
EXAMINATIONS.
There will be public examinations at I he do
of each term, both in Normal and Model schools
which the nubile Is invited to attend. A certi
ficate will be awarded to those who give satis
factory evidence of acccralo attainments com
