The Pittsburg papers noticing the explosion
(of the New Casllo Bank, leaving $lOO,OOO of
ita worthlcss bills in the hands of individuals
\vho took them because “they are as good as
'gold,” saysL
The Now Oasllc Bank has been in operation
'about eighteen months. When organized a
Wall Street operator, named Sherman, obtain
bd control, and put in a German named Neiler,
as Cashier. Within a few months it was asc
ertained that Neiler had loaned its notes 10
‘Sherman to, the amount of fifty or sixty thou
sand dollars,whereupon a prosecution was in
stituted against Sherman, who disgorged ten
thousand’, dolors, and subsequently, all they
could ascertain he had received, except four or
five thousand dollars. Of the amount return
ed, sixteen .thousand dollars, it is alleged, was
retained a Pittsburg broker, for his servi
ces in forcing the Wall street man to disgorge.
Neiler was summarily dismissed, and one
Wagonsellcr, of Luzerne county, (who gave
General Charter and Hon. 11. M. Fuller as bail,
iti $30,0u0,) was chosen cashier. The direc
tors commenced .withdrawing heavy issues of
the bank, and in two months past had redeem
ed nearly two hundred thousand dollars, when,
on Wednesday of last week, the cashier was
missing, and with him whatever small sum in
cosh that might previously have been in the
< safe of the institution.

cashier and teller had gone East on business”
—and tho bank has not since been opened, al
though some of tho directors redeemed consid
erable amounts of Us notes on Thursday and
Friday, and pledged their property for tho re
demption of more. On Wednesday Wngonsel
ler was-in the city, and gave a man five thou
sand dollars in notes of the bank, on his pro
mise to return him four thousand in other
money on Saturday, in Philadelphia. The
five thousand have been returned to the bantt.
The runaway cashier appears to bo a defaul
ter m 353.000—according to tho statement of
tho directors—but St may bo much more.—
They think the notes out do not exceed 80,000
—but, as the President cannot tell how many
he has signed, or to what extent WngonselliT
has over-issued, we have no doubt It is much
more. The assets arc nominally two hundred
thousand, but may prove not worth one fourth
that amount. As the ascertained losses amount
to but seventy or eighty thousand dollars, and
the stockholders are individually liable for every
note out, we have little doubt its circulation
will be eventually redeemed at par. The di
rectors should ut once offer such a reward as
will secure the arrest and punishment of the
scoundrel who has defrauded them.

in stocks, and that the latter lias involved him.
