WeitzeU ascertained that, Campbell hadrefused
to surrender tho boards, ho armed himself with
two muskets and a hatchet and went to tho res
idence of. Campbell and demanded them. Ho
was told.bo.could not .have them until the reat
was-: paid;. whereupon WeitzeU. deUbcratcly
fired upon Campbell, lodging thirty-nine grains
of shot inhis legs. l Ho then drew up the other
gun, but Campbell motioned for him not to
shoot, and lie desisted, and hastily fled. Wo
are not informed whether Campbell’s wounds
arc dangerous or not, nor have wo learned of

It is safe to put down eight Nebraska senators
from these States, and one fromMissouri,whoso
legislature, although- politically uncertain* is in
favor of tho Nebraska law by a large majority.
Herri then, are nine Nebraska senators in pros
pect,’ which may'safely ho added to tho thirty
ono already elecotid, making an aggregate of
forty in favor of saidlaw. Even conceding to
the anti-NcbraSkaitcs all tho chances for the
senators to bo; elected in Illinois, Dura, New
York, New Hampshire, (two,) and Wisconsin
—which they aro by no means to—
still they would have but twenty-two senators
all told, or only about one-third of the, whole
number; tho Senate, when toll, comprising

at East New York, there Was a vtry unique
sale. Tho wild animals, which have been shown
in almostnll parts of the United States for sev
eral years under tho name of Bamum’s Me
nagcric. which were owned by P. T. Barnum,
S, B. Bowes, S. E. Stratton (Tom Thumb’s
father), and' Avery Smith, were sold to close
the partnejshin. ;
The two Giraffes, valued at $7,500 each,
were bought by Mr. Barnum, and will winter,
at the Museum.
The Rhinoceros found no buyer. Pork is
too low.
Seven Elephants were puliip in one lot, Tho
first bid was $l,OOO for the seven. They were
sold to S. B. Howes for $2,300. These ani
mals were imported from Ceylon, five ycara
ago, at a cost, it is said of $3,000 each. , It will
cost something to keep them through the win
ter. They will cat 200 pounds of hay and two
bushels of oats each per day, and wash it down
with a half barrel of water. . %
Two lions and one lioness, trained animals ;
two Asiatic lions,-male and female; a Bengal
tiger, a leopard, zebra, black bear, two hyenas,
alpaca, prariowolf, monkcys,’&c.. with cages,

B. Howes, for 52,500. Tom Thumb's wogons

hard winter," but it is not—it is the commence
ment of one. It is a “winter of discontent"

doctrine of free trado, and claim it as their
own. Tina lack of consistency on the part of
Massachusetts, however, does not militate
against tho movement. -It is a good one, and
wo hope that the first act of the coming session
will bo to repeal tho entire duty on coal, and
open the ports, for tho benefit and advantage of
