    AMERICAN VOLUNTEER.
CARLISLE, APRIL 6, 1864.
Removal of. the Post Office.
Tire Post Office has been removed to the
largo three-story brick building, on the north
west comer of South Hanover and Pomfret
streets, where it will hereafter be kept.
Our. New Town Council.
The members of tho'now Town Council held
their first meeting on'Monday evening the 27th
ult., in their chamber in the Court House. The
oath of office was administered to each by Col.
A. Noble, Chief Burgess. The Council then
organized by the election of Joun B. Parker,
Esq., President, and. E. Beatty, Secretary pro.
tem. The Council then proceeded to the elec
tion of the various borough officers, which re
sulted in the choice of the following persons :
Secretary. —James Mullin.
Treasurer. —Daniel Ecklcs.
Market Master.— Stephen Keepers.
Tax Collector. —Alexander Woods.
Street Commissioner.— Worley Matthews.
Street Regulators.—J acob Spangler, John R.
Tumor, William Line.
High Constable. —Joseph Stuart.
The following Standing Committees of Coun
ty 1 . were also appointed:
Committee on Ordinances. —Messrs. Parker,
Qutsball and Brctz.
Committee on Accounts. —Messrs. Beatty,
Mdilyer and Inholl.
Committee on Streets, ffc. —Messrs. Rhoads,
Myers and Egbert. 4
We lehm from the Herald that the Council
has increased the salary of the High Constable
to $225 a year. This, we think, a very liberal
salary, and we hope that that officer will now
faithfully perform the duties appertaining to the
office. Heretofore, the office of High Constable
has been a snug little sinecure, the incumbent
pocketing the salary and performing little or
no service as an equivalent. At the salary now
allowed, that officer should devote his whole
time and attention to the discharge of his duties.
Our new Burgess, Col. Armstrong Noble,
it is said, has expressed himself to the effect,
t mt he is determined to perform Ins whole duty
promptly, and “ without fear, favor or affec
tion.” We do not doubt it. If he makes as
efficient a Burgess as he did a Colonel, wc may
sleep safely and 'soundly o’ nights.
The Late Fire—Large Reward Offered.
We see by a handbill posted up at different
public places, that Col. Noule, the Chief Bur
gess of the borough, lias, by direction of the
Town Council, offered a reward of One Hundred
and Fifty Dollars for such information oa may
lead to the detection and conviction of the in
dividual or individuals who, on the night of the
28th ultimo, set fire to the stable of Mr. Qeo.
Hkndbl.
From this it would appear that our borough
authorities are fully convinced that the recent
disastrous Arc was the work of an incendiary,
and that they arc determined to leave no means
untried in order to discover and bring to justice
the guilty perpetrator of so infamous a crime.
That th y may bo successful, must bo the earnest
prayer of every good citizen and right-thinking
man. The crime of arson is the most dangerous,
ar.d at the same time the most malignant and
cowardly act which can be committed, and it is
to be hoped that the author of the recent cala
mity may yet be discovered and severely dealt
his sane mind, deliberately,
and in the darkness of night, applies the torch
of the incendiary to his neighbor’s premises,
thus endangering the lives and property of an
entire community, is a miscreant unfit to dwell
among his fellow men, and should be compelled
to pass the remainder of his days within the
walls of the Penitentiary.
Removals. —Tho first of April has produced
some changes in tho borough among our publi
cans. Mr. C. Q. Stouqii has removed to the
“ Washington Hotel,” on West High street, re
cently occupied Ly Mr. H. L. Burkholder, and
ho is succeeded in the old “Rhoads House,” on
tho same street, by Mr. William Kozier, from
Mount Rock. On East High street, Mr. David
Martin has taken possession of the “Farmer’s
Hotel,” formerly kept by him, and recently in
the occupancy of Major John McCartney, who
retires to private life. On the same street, Mr.
Jonathan Dipprndappbr has taken the “Lc
tort Spring Hotel,” which will hereafter bo kept
by him. Mr. S. Allkgier having vacated the
three story brick tavern stand, comer of South
Hanover and Pomfret streets, it will be occu
pied hereafter by the Post Office.
Godet’s Lady’s Book.— The April number
of that old and popular monthly, “Qodet’s
Lady’s Book,” is already out, and in the va
riety and attractiveness of its contents and em
bellishments, is one of tho best numbers ever
issued. Every pngo is marked with industry,
talent and taste.
New Spring Goods. —The spring trade now
opening bids fhlr to bo exceedingly lively. Many
of our merchants have already opened their rc-,
spectivo stocks, and solicit the attention of the
public. Our advertising columns will show the
purchaser where every description of goods may
bo found, and the rule is a good and true one,
that tho mau of business who advertises, can be
dealt with to the best advantage. See in ano
ther part of to-day's paper the advertisements
of Mr. Ogilby, of East High street; Mr. Philip
North Hanover street; Messrs. Ar
nold & LivjyosTON, and Messrs. Weisb &
Campbell, of tho same street; and Messrs.
Bentz & Brothers, of South Hanover street.
Daguerreotypes. —Wohayo bpon shown re
cently several daguerreotypes, takpn by Mrs.
ft. A. Reynolds, 6f this place, and wo pro fixe
Id edrifeda 'ivo liavo never seen mdro beautiful
JikcncascS, being faithful and exact representa
tives of tho living originals. There is no more
expressive or yaluable memento of those wo love,
than a handsome and faUhfpl likeness. Those
who wish to “ secure tho shadow 6re tho sub
stance fades”, of Some loved friend, should at
once call upon Mrs. Reynolds, at her Dagutr
rcan Saloon, on East Louthcr street, immedia
cy in tho rear of Humcr’s store.
Tub Watbh Wobks.—-Wo learn that these
works oro now being pushed forward with much
energy, and it is oxpeoted that before tho end
of summer they will bo completed. On South
Hanover street, just in front of our office, some
huge cast iron pipes have been deposited, and
tho digging of tho trenches for their reception
will bo commenced in a few days. When fin
ished and in operation, these Works will bo of
immense benefit to the borough, and in case of
fire, our firemen Could act with gnat efficiency.
We trust that the slight opposition which has
tWR manifest*! to them wfilceaie entirely.
New School Houses.—Wo aro.pleased to
see that tho Directors of our Common Schools
have advertised for proposals for tho building
of two additional brick school houses, for the
accommodation of three of tho public schools of
tho borough—tho proposals to be received until
Wednesday tho 12th inst. This is right and
proper, and Wo think it will meet the appro
bation of all our citizens.- One of the new build
ings is to bo erected on East Leather street, to
be two stories high, 31 feet in front and 34 feet
in depth, and intended for tho use of two schools.
The other, a one story building, 21 feet in front
and 29 feet in depth, is to bo located on Dick--
inson alley, on the foot of the same lot. Plans
and specifications of tho buildings may bo seen
at tho store of J. W. Ebt, Esq.

Valuable Potatoes for Bd%.
THE subscriber offers the following valuable
varieties of potatoes for sale. The N. Y. l
State Agricultural Society have generously en
couraged their importation and culture.
Ist. The Rough Purple Chili, This was im
ported at a great expense from South America,
in 1861, and was the only sort out of eight adap
ted to our climate. For hardaitess, yield , and
quality for the table, ft has no equal. Seventy
five small parcels of it were widely spread in
1853, over twelve northern States. From more
than one-third of them, embracing nine States,
reports have been received. These reports, not
withstanding the unfavorublcness of the season,
usually show a yield varying from twenty to sixty
pounds, from one pd. planted. But i\co cases of
disease have been reported, one from Mass., and
one from N. Y., both in circumstances of very
unfavorable culture. The adaptation of this va
riety to the varying soil and climate of our coun
try ia such as to render it superior to any now
cultivated. Price $8 per bushel.
2d. Seedlings of Ihe Rough Purple Chilis—
These were derived from the seed-ball of the
preceding, in 1852. They present a considera
ble number of varieties. They have been chosen
i by three successive selections, from nearly eight
hundred varieties, so as to secure hardiness, the
beat yield and fine flesh. In season of maturity
many of them, and in color and shape the most
of them, exceed the parent. They are now of
fered to the public, after a most laborious and
costly cultivation, In the fullest confidence that
they will make an addition of valuable sorts to
those now in use, such ns have never before been
made. Connected with them are some other
sorts of the same age, and equally valuable, and
similarly selected from three other families.—
Many of those seedlings were widely tested the
hist year, in connection with the Rough Purple
Chilis. Those varieties ot these seedlings which
are too late for the northern States, have been
expressly selected for the South. Price $8 pur
bushel.
