This Is to certify, that 1 have put In one of
Howd’s Patent Cast Iron Direct Action Water
Wheels, in the place of a Reaction Wheel; that
the Direct Wheel does not Bood'tlie tail race as
much by three inches as the reaction did, and
that I can grind seven bushels with the direct
action wheel an hour, and drive two run of
stones, where I could not grind four bushels in
the same time with the reaction and drive one
run of stones.

This may certify that Thave had in my Mill
one of Mr. Howd’s direct water wheels for the
apace of one year. It is a five feet wheel, and
1 have had a re-action in the same place—l have
also had WJteeleirV Union Wheel, yet I think
Mr. Howd’s will do more business with less wa
ter than any other I have tried. It docs well
in back water. I have.'had. from sto 6 feet
head. I think we could do as much work with
half the water as we used to do with the under
shoot wheel, which has also been in operation
in my mill. LA WHENCE RILEY,
Lyons, September 3, 1838.
This may certify, that we have used one of S.
Howd’s patent water Wheels since December
last, by the side of a re-actipn. wheel, and we
think that Howd’s will do double the businey.
with thro same water thnt the reaction wheel
wijl door very near. _ We never bars but three
feet head, and can grind with IhateightJjushels

wheel will do as good business under back wa

the attention and patronage of the public.

It has for many years been a great desideratum

'After long and tedious experiments, the sub

In cases where absorption of the aveolar pro

IMPROVEMENT IN BRIDGES.
ITtRANCIS GOOD, of the township of New
S' London, in the county of Chester, and state
oTVennsylvania, obtained letters patent for an
improved plan of erecting Bridges over streams
of-water. The plan combines strength artd per
mancncy with economy, so much so as not to re
quire, in some situations, more than one half the
expense to erect a Bridge on this plan, and when
built would not be liable to be injured by a fresh
et, or rise in the stieam: the Bridge being con
structed and secured in such a manner, that if
the water should rise so high ns to run over the
top of it, the Bridge would remain firm and se
cure. The plan has been submitted to a num
ber of scientific men, who all pronounce it a
great improvement. One on this plan has been
erected over a branch of Wbiteclay creek, in
the township of Londongrove, which received
the appi’obatioh of a Jury, appointed by the court
to view the same. The subscriber having pur

T R I UM P H
Of the Homoeopathic, over the old practice
of Medicine fairly established,
TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN.
SOMETIME the last of August, A. D. 1837,
a small protuberance appeared oh.my face
near my left eyei 1 thought it was what is called
aiblind boil, and treated it accordingly. Several
days after it first ap| eared, it was examined by
a physician of this place, who pronounced it a
CANCER, and directed me to apply a lunar
caustic, which I did lor two or three weeks, but
found no help from it. X also applied other rem
edies to no better effect, after which I was di
rected to use caustic potash, but all to no pur
pose. The last proposed remedy created a sore
about the size of a quarter of a dollar, and a co
pious discharge. It was again examined by.a
medical doctor, and thought by him to be suffi
ciently burned by the caustic, and he advised me
to apply some healing salve. I did so, and as it
healed, the cancer was more visible than at first!
and by the time the sore war healed, or nearly I
so—for it never was fully healed frog-, its first
appearance, until healed in the "Way hereafter
stated. At this time there was a head appeared
on the surface, about the size of a five penny bit,
with a shooting pain and a crawling sensation in
it. , v
Having been acquainted for severiilyears with
Mr. Asa F.Smith, generally known in this neigh
borhood, by the name of the Indian Ddctor • and
having seen him during the time 1 was applying
the remedies above stated, I asked his opinion.
He said, he feared they would not effect a curet
that he had cured many, and was perfectly ac
quainted with them imill their stages and vari
ety. After I had found those remedies which 1
had been using, ineffectual, I applied to the said
Mr. Smith; he applied a plaster,-with a small
quantity of powder, much larger Chan the tumor,
which" was exceedingly painful. .He gave me
a phial of the powder, and thecomposition of
the plaster,' with directions how to use them.—
It will he observed that the plaster was only for
the purpose of sticking and keeping the air from
the wound—the powder was intended to have
effect oh the cancer—and ah effect it bad, in
deed, for it burned similar to red hot iron. The
application of ‘which 1 continued' for about 38
days, during which time’my-sufferingiLW-ere-CX.
treme, beyond description. Indeed, it now ap
'pears astonishing to me how I bore up under it
so long. ’ In the course of this application* there
were several pieces of this cancer taken mu* hut
after taking out a piece in ope place and then
going to another for the same purpose, by the
time I had succeeded in taking that out another
one appeared in the place whence the former
one had been removed, until 1 had taken nut
'same place in succession, and
more still appeared lirinc n.»m« pla««. - »y-%hc
sufferings I had endured from the application of
tTffe said powder I was induced to cease using it.
The day on which I ceased the-application of it
I was informed that Dr. Frederick Ehrmun
professed to he skilled Jn the cure of cancers:
this was sometime in December 1837, to the best
of mv recollection, 1 called on the doctor that
evening. The next day he called to see me„ and
gave me medicine, which was used inwardly.—
He would not allow any outward application,
excepting dn/ lint —and to my astonishment,
there was no further discharge from the wound,
more than barely saturated the small quantity of
lint, which was only sufficient to cover it. After
I had taken his- prescription for three or four
days, I found by the sensation in the other side
of my face, that it was as highly charged with
the cancer as was the side I had made the ap.
plication of the powder to, aforesaid, and that it
had also got down over my under jaw into the
glands of my neck. I also found a cancerous
sensation on the inside of my right arm, between
the wrist and elbow, and another in the fleshv
part of my right thigh, and also in other p irtsof ]
my body. The sensation was ho Well Jtnown.by
me, having experienced so niuch of it, I could
not have been mistaken. After taking Dr. Ehr
man's prescription two or three days, I observed
a change in all those affected purls, above na
med, and more particularly in the wound which
was opened by the former . pplic»tion, which
now..began to heal.--L t l'i li k.itwaa notmore-than
two or three weeks from the tirtie Dr. Chrm ui 1
made the. first application until my face was
healed completely over, and has continued so '
ever since, and appears to he sound. " f.
From the foregoing facts I feel it a duty I owe
to Dr. Ehrnr.an and to the public at large, to
ceitify that bE fully removed the cakcer
FROM MV SYSTEM, by his fireseri/ition, and that
he not only cured me of the cancer, but hasp »r*
tially removed a disposition which I had long
felt of a dyspeptic affection, and also some urin
ary obstruction, so tbßt X feel more whole and ,
'sound In body than I have for several years past. |

A CASE OP DVSPEPSIA
of ZO years standing cured by Homoeopathic
■practice.
I do certify that 1 have been afflicted with dys
pepsia for the time above mentioned, and for the
last five years very severely, attended with a
burning,- aching and heating m the stomach, and
occasionally with stitches and vomiting. I ciiulii
not relish strong diet o any kind, and Was geh
erallyof a costive habit. " During my long ill
ness, I employed nine different physicians, at
different times, in the hope of getting some re
lief, if not entirely cured) but all was in vain—
At length I heard of different, astonishing cures
performed by Dr. Frederick Ehnnan, Homoe
opathic Physician, and I employed him as the
tenth, but withoiit-.niuch lione. He gave me
some pleasant medicine and continued it four or
five weeks, when I felt great relief, and in a verv
short time afterwards 1 was completely cured,
and for nearly a year since I have enjoyed a good
state of health, without theleast symptom of that
disagreeable- complaint returning. 1> would
therefore recommend to those afflicted with sim-
ilar or other complaints. to make early applica
tion to Dr. Ehrman, whose medicine is not only
pleasant to the taste, but seldom or never fails
in affording relief.' Moreover, the Doctor’:,
charge is uncommonly moderate. Witness mv

TO THE PUBLIC.
: I do certify with pleasure,- that Dr. Frederick
-Ehrman, Homoeopathic Physician,of Carlisle,
cured meof the following complaints, tow'd:—
tn the autumn of 183 f l was afflicted with u vin.
lent attack of dysentery, and I applied to and
was irttntded of cur most eminent
Ijphyslciana with but little success. Sometime
nifter I was afflicted with what is generally ter
med inflammatory rheumatism, and the pains 1
suffered were excruciating, particnlatly in my
joints.- I was attended by the same eminent
physician, and so acute were my pains? that
laudanum was copiously administered to lull me
ahd ease my sufferings*—it afforded but a tempo
rary relief: my joints were swelled and stiff, my
right arm and hand were powerless—l-could
not move a finger. I had the white swelling in
my right kne'e, and my ankle joint' was swelled
anditiff. I had a cough with purulent expecto
ration, accompanied with the dysentery . In fact
I was left by the different diseases, and the treat
ment prescribed, a living skeleton, almost with
out any hope of relief. One of my neighbors
who visited me about this time, navised me to
call on Dr. Frederick Ehrman, and I did so, on
the principle that a drowning man would catch
at straws; nr, in other words, I was willing to
try any thing to get relief from the miseries I
was laboring under, and contrary to my expec
tation, as well as all who saw me, I soon found a
general relief—my painyremoved, and my flesh
and health increased by Dr. Ehrman's treat
ment, and from that time I enjoyed and now-eru
jny a better state of health than before I was af
flicted. Ido therefore, with confidence recom
mend to those suffering under similar afflictions,
to call upon Dr Ehrman, in Carlisle. (the soon
er the better, after they become afflicted) under
a firm belief that they will he soon relieved and
restored to their usual if not better health, than
before they were afflicted, without the use of the
lancets nr the disagreeable and painful operation
of blistering or un nmmon restriction of diet.—
His medicine is pleasant but powerful, and is
always attended with beneficial consequences.—

For aboift two months it increased more and
more, though I tried every means to get relief.
I then employed one of our most eminent physi

was confined .to lled, and every movement of-niy

thought I must die. I cannot describe the suf
ferings 1 felt from the pain in my breast, nor the
quantity of putrid matter I discharged when
coughing—it appeared that mv whole inside
would be spit out. 1 was reduced to a skeletal.,
About this time some of my friend* came to see
me and related some cures of similar complaints
performed by Or. Ehrman, and strongly urged
me to give him atrial. I had heard of them,
before,-and consented, without any hope howev
er of recovering. But, contrary to the expec

THE TRUE RICHES OF LIFE IS
HE ALTH.
We knov) that health, nnd the ability to labor
Is the wealth of the great mass of the people in
this as in most other countries. 7b preserve %
therefore , that health by JfAIURAL, means, is
a gnind moral and political scheme, to Juffil
which requires our utmost attention .
THE unparalleled reputation which Peters*
Pills have acquired as a Medical Restorative,
is the most unquestionable proof that can be gi
ven of their immense importance to the afflicted,
in almost every class of diseases. The number
of letters received from patients recovering thro*
their means is really prodigious, and the com
plaints which they nave cured are almost as va
ried as,Jhey are numerous. But still "there are
<«pms In which they are more especially benefi
cial than, in others) and among those may be
named the too often fatal complaints of the sto
mach and bowels, such as. Cholic, Flatulence,
and Indigestion, for which they are not only a
certain but an immediate cure.
It is well known that from the disarrangement
of the stomach and bowels arise nine tenths of
all the maladies of adult and declining life) that
this is the foundation of Flatulency, Spasmodic
Pains, Indigestion, Loss of Apetite &c„ and that
those in their turn give birth to Dropsy, Liver
Complant, Consumption, ami habitual lowness of
spirits) therefore Peters* Pills being the very
.best medicine which has ever been discovered
for the incipient diseasts of the intestines, are
necessaril> the surest preventives of those dread,
fnl, and also general disorders, whirli embitter
mature life, anddrag so many millions to un
timely graves. , __
In speaking t thus Dr. deters, arrogates nothing
to himself that has not been conceded by the
public He is no needy quack or unknown spec'
nlatnr, who conies before the world as his own
herald and witness, hut .is placed in a responsi
bility of situation by the patronage which he has
enjoyed for years, and which is increasing to an
extent unprecedented do the annals of medicine,
that makes him careful to arrest nothing which
is not borne nut by. the most infalihte proof, and
hence he does not fear to be put to the test in any
thing which he has promised respecting his Pills.
■ Dr. Peters is most happy to he/able to slate,
on thtf authority of a great mimWrmf regular
physicians, that wherever his Vegetable Pills
have been introduced, .they have almost super
ceded the adoption of mercurial experiments,
for their peculiar laculty in sweetening the blood,
and stimulating it to expel all noxious juices, and
in giving strength and tone „lo the nerves, pre
vents disease Irom acquiring that strength which
must he got under,.lf at all, by dangerous reme-.

A CATAIaOGuijOF REASONS.
For using Dr. Peters’ Celebrated Vegetable
PILLS. v
- 1.- Because they are exceedingly popular,
which proves them to be. exceedingly good.
2. Because they are composed of simples
which have the pnwer'to do good in an immense
number of casesrwithout possessing the means
to do injury in any, .
.>3 .Because they are.not a quack medicine,but
the scientific compound of a regular physician,
who has made his profession the study of his life.
4 -Because they are not unpleasant to take not*
distressing to retain, while they are most effect
ive to operate*
5 Because they are recommended as standard
medicine by .the regular faculty.
6 Because by keeping the system in a natural
state of action, they cure almost -every disease
which is incidental to the human frame.
7 Because they are cheap and portable, and
will retain all their virtues in full vigor, in any
climate; and for &ny length of time.
8 Because, notwithstanding their simplicity
and mildness, they are one of the speediest pur*
gatiye medicines which has yet been discovered.
9 Because they are an unfailing "remedy for
procuring a good appetite.
10 Because in cases of spleen or despondency,
by their healthy influence on the excited state of
the body, they have a most happy effect, in
calming, and invigorating the mind.
11 Because' they-effect their cures without
the usual attendants of other pills, sickness and
grlpings.
13 Because as welt ns being an unrivalled
purifier of the general system, they are a sover
eign remedy for sick head-ache.
|8 Because they differ Irnro the majority of
medicines, in the fact that the more they-arc
.known the more they are approved.
14 Because as their application creates no
debility in the system, they may he taken with,
out producing any hindrance to business or the
usual pursuits of every day life.
15 Because when once Introduced into a fam
ily, or a'village, they almost immediately take
the precedence of all other medicines in genera/
complaints.
16 • Because a pumber of the wonderful cures
they have ♦ ffected, can he.substantiated without
my undue means being resorted to, to procure
invalid testimonies.
17 Because their composition is such, that
thev are equally applicable to (he usual diseases
of warm, cold, oVtemperate climates.
18 Because two nr three, a*re in general ’suf
ficient for a dose*— so that, ns is the rase with
tf.e patent niedinnes—the patient
is not compelled to make a meal fft - tin m.
19 Because each imlludual pill is put up un
der the immediate superinti ndence of the pro
prietor, so that no mi*take'in the romp* site n <r
quantity can ‘possibly occur tbr» ugh the care
lessness of a less interested agent.
20 . Because they purity the.frame without
debilitating the system.
21 Because, notwithstanding their immense -
popularity, no person ha- ever venture d to raise
against them the.breath of censure, which would
not have beet* the case, if envy coijM have" dis
•covered in them a'sirtele fla"w to cavil at
22 Because—(and this fact is of the utmost
importance)—ladies in a c.»rtainsituatn n may
take them, (not more than two t r thr* e at.a
time howVvei!) without in the *>light<«t degree"
iortirring the hazard of ahoithn. Wore the
virtues of Peters* inestimable pill-, c< i fined to
this desirable end alone, it would give tin m a
decided advantage over the medicines of all com
petitors, as in no cases is there more danger,to
be apprehended, or for which so Yewhav? been
discovered, as the’one referred to.
23. Because •'while they are so t fficient in (heir
operations with adults they may. at the same time
