IMPROVEMENT IN BRIDGES.
EjIRANCIS GOOD, of the township of New
F London, in the county of Chester, and state
orPennsyl vania, obtained letters patent for an
improved plan of erecting Bridges over streams
of water. The plan combines strength and per
manency with economy, so much so as not to re
quire, in some situations, more than one half the
expense to erect a Bridge on this plan, add when
built would not be liable to be injured by a fresh
et, or rise in the sticam; the Bridge being con
structed and- secured in such a manner, .that if
the water should rise so high at to run over the
topoflt, the Bridge would remain firm and se
cure. The plan has been submitted to a num
ber of scientific! men, who' all pronounce it a
great improvement. One on this plan has been
erected over a branch-of Whiteclay,creek, in
the township -of Londongrove, which received
the approbation of a Jury appointed by the Court
to view the same. The subscriber having pur

d wnAll protuberance appeared on my ttce

a blind boil, and treated it accordingly. Several
day 6 after it first api-eared/it wasekumined by
a physician of this place, who pronounced it a
CANCER, and directed me tn apply a lunar
caustiCt which I did tor two or.three weeks, hut
found no Help from it. I also applied other rem
edies to no better effect, after which 1 was di*
rected to use caustic potash, but all to no pur
pose. The last proposed remedy created ninnj
about the Hise of a quarter of a dollar, and a co>
pious discharge* It was again examined by a
ipedical doctor, and thought by him to be suffi
ciently burned by the caustic, and he advised me
to apply some healing salve, 1 did so, and as it
healed; the cancer was more visible than at first;
and by the time the sore war healed, or nearly
so—for it never was fully healed,From its first
app-arance, until healed in the way hereafter
stated. At this time there was a head-appeared
on the surface, about .the size of a five penny hit,
with a shooting pain'and u crawling sensation in
It.
Having: been acquainted for several years with
| Mr. Asa F.Smith, generally known in this ijeigh-
I borhood, by the name of the Indian Doctor t and
I having seen him during.the time’Twas applying
the reihedtes above stated, tasked his opinion.
I He.said, he feared lhe.y_w.ould not effect a ciifn
j that he had cured.many, and was perfectly ac
quainted with them in ail their stages and vari
ety. ’After I had found .those remedies which 1
had been using, ineffectual, 1 applied to the said
Mr. £mitfi; he applied a plaster, with/.a. small
quantity of powder, much larger than thelumor,
which was cxceedmgly paipfu). He gave me
a phial of the powder, and the composition of
the plaster, with directions how to use them.—
It will he observed that the plaster was only For
the purpose of sticking and keeping the air from
thVwoimd--the powder was intended to have
effect on^the-Cancer—and an effect it had, in
deed, for it burned similar to red hot iron. The
application of which 1 continued for about-38
days, during which time my sufferings were ex
treme, beyond description. indeed, it now ap
pears astonishing to me how 1 bore up under it
so long. In the course of this application, there
were several pieces of this cancer taken ouii but
after taking out a piece in one place and then
going to another for the same purpose, by the
time I had succeeded in taking that nut Mother
one appeared in the place whence the former
one had been removed, until I had; taken nut
three pieces in the same place in succession, and
more still appeared in the same place. By the
gufferiiurs I had endured from the application of
tne BampowntMri was innu(^^y <
The day on which I ceased lh? application of it
1 was informed that Hr. Frederick Ebrman
professed to be skilled in the cure of cancers:
this was sometime in O cember 1837, to the best
of my recollection. 1 called on the doctor that
evening. The next day he called to see me, and
gave me medicine, which was used inwardly.—
He would not allow any outward application,
excepting dry /inf—and to my astonishment,
there was no further discharge from the wound,
barely saturated the small quantity of
lint, .which was only sufficient to cover it. After
I had taken hia prescription for three or four
days, 1 found by the sensation in the other side
of mV face, that it wa* as.highly charged with
the cancer as was the side I had, made the ap.
Klicatton of the powder to, kforesaid, ami that it
ad also got down over my under jaw into-the.
glands of my neck; 1 also found a cancerous
sensation on the inside, of my right arm, between
the wrist and elbow, and {toother in the fleshy
part of my right thigh, and ajso in other parts of
my body,. The sensation was so well hhow.aby
me, having experienced so much ><f it, I Could
pot have been mistaken. After takjng Dr. Ehr
man’s prescription two.'or three days, 1 observed
a change in all, those. affected parts, above na
med, and more particularly in the wound which
was opened by the former tpplic .tion, .which
now began to heal. I thinkjt wasnot more thah
two or three wtfeks from the linne Dr. Ebrman
made the first application until my face was
healed completely oYer, and has continued so
ever since, and appears to lie' Sound,
