TWENTY-FIFTH CONGRESS.' SECOND.SESSION. IN SENATE. Thursday. Feb. 7. After the reception of some reports and private petitions— ' Mr. 'Clay, of Kentucky, presented a me morial, signed by a large number of the in habitants of the District of Columbia, remon stratingagainst the interference of the citi zens of"other parts of the country in the subject of slavery in the District, and against any action on the part of Congress in com pliance with such unauthorized interference. Mr. Clay addressed the Senate nearly two hours in an earnest, animated, and most eloquent exposition of his views of the sub ject presented by the memorial, and in op position to the proceedings and ulterior de signs of the abolitionists. Mr. C. concluded by moving (as the memorial demanded no legislative action) that-jt be laid on the table, and be printed; which motion (after a few remarks from Mr. Calhoun, expressing his great satisfaction at the views and sentiments delivered by Mr. Clay) was agreed to nem. con.; and the Senate adjourned. HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES, Mr. W. Cost Johnson, from the Select Committee on the Public Lands, on leave, made the following report and resolutions:’* Resolved, that the Committee report to the House and ask leave to be discharged from the further consideration of the subject matters referred to them, and-that the jour nal of the Committee be reported_and pub lished. Resolved, further, that the Committee deem it inexpedient to take further steps,on the subject'of the Public Lands this session. Mr. Robertson offered an.amendment in structing the committee to report a bill for dividing the proceeds of land sales among the several states; —the division to be sus pended during a war with sny foreign pow er. The hour having expired, without taking 1 any question, the House proceeded to the orders of the day. The Speaker presented sundry Executive communications, which were laid.on the ta ble and ordered to be printed. The House then resumed the considera tion of the Army Bill. The question pend ing being on the motion of Mr. Mercer to amend by inserting 530,000 for certain Sur veys. - The amendment was cut off by the pre vious question being carried. The bill was thereupon ordered to be engrossed, and,was then - read a third time, passed, and sent to the Senate for concurrence. Morgan sailed from Portsmouth on the 25(1T of December, and brings the London papers of the previous dayv We are indebted to Cnpt. Morgan for the use-of-a-file of-London papers to die evening of die 22d inclusive. y' The steamer at Liver pool on the morning oPtfic 21st, having sail ed on the 6th. She carried out the Presi dent’s Message, which is published in the London papers of the 22d. The Courier (ministerial) remarks.on that portion of it relating to the invasions of Canada. “The language used with respect to Ca nada mitst be received as a satisfactory re ply to the charge raised against Mr. Van Buren by party hostility.” The same paper pronounces the corres pondence between -Col. Worth and Col. Dundas. “creditable to the feelings of both officers.” The Vicenncs la. Sun says that a most daring attempt tvasmade a few evenings ago to rob the receiver’s office. With„ a large iron Crow-bar, they burst open the "shutters of_a back window, and went in. The iron chest in which 'the money was deposited, resisted all attempts to open it. Any quantity ot Hides can be procured in the neighborhood, as there is no other tannery with in several miles of the place—and there is also every facility tor getting hides from the cities, and sending them to market when tanned, eith er by rail road or canal.
