The HHunt u(_.,don Journal. farm anb The happiest men who Are those who cultivate the soil. Cultural Uses of Lime. The advantages of the use of lime arc so many that it is almost impossible to enumerate them. Their effects may be described as being both chemical and mechanical, and as beiog exercised both upon the organic and inorganic constitu ents of the soil. The following may be taken as a summary of some of the princi pal benefits to be derived from it : 1. Upon deep alluvial and clay soil it increases the crop of potatoes and renders them less waxy. Sprinkled over them in the store heap, it preserves them, and when riddled ever the cut sets, it wonder fully increases their fertility. li. Lime eradicates the finger and dis- ease in turnips and gives greater sound ness to the bulbs. :1. It gives, when'applicd to 5,.)11 meadow land, a lar i rcr production of mere nutri Lions grasses. It also exterminates coarse and sour grasses, destroys couch grass, and acts powerfully upon rye grasses. 4. Upon arable land it destroys weeds of various kind=. 5. It rapidly decompobus vegetable mat ter, producing a large amount of food fur plants in the form of carbonic acid gas. 1 3. It destroys or neutralizes the acids in the soil; hence its adaptability to our sour soils. 7. It acts powerfully upon some of the inorganic parts of the soils, especially on the sulphate of iron found in peaty soils, and the sulphate of magnesia and alumina. S. It proves fatal to worms and larva; of injurious insects, though favorable to the growth of shell hearers. _ _ 9. Slack live added to vegetable matter causes it to give of its nitrogen in the form of ammonia. ITpon soils in which ammonia is combined with acids it sets free the ammonia, which is seized upon by the plants. 10. Solubility in water causes it to sink and to ameliorate the subsoil. When the aril contains fragment of granite or trap rocks, lime hat,t,ns their deeowpozition and liberates the silicates. 11. Its combination with the acids in the soil produces saline compounds—such as potash, soda, etc. 12. Strewn over young plants, it de stroys or drives away the turnip fly. 13. Worked in with grass seeds, the beneficial effects of lime, chalk, marl, and Atell-sand have been visible for thirty years. 14. Applied to the rot heap, lime effect ually destroys the seeds of weeds To sum its advantages : When properly applied to the soil, it purifies and stimu lates its action, thereby promoting the growth of healthy vegetables of all kinds. A Good and Wholesome Harvest Drink. As alehohol drinks have happily been driven from the harvest fields, there have been various drinks besides water substi tuted, but scarcely any of them meeting fully the conditions sought for in the way of a wholesome satisfying beverage. Water, even in all its purity, does not seem to quench the thirst and stimulate the body, as it produces additional perspi_ ration and passes through the pores al most like passing through a collander, leaving the system exhausted and weak ; besides, a drink of cold water, when suf fering under a great degree of heat, is dangerous, even at times producing sud den death. Latterly in England and else where a drink is prepared by mixing oat meal with water, in the proportion of three or four ounces to a gallon of water. This is found not only to satisfy the thirst better than water, even when tempered with vinegar or other acid, but to pro• duce additional strength of body. Oat meal possesses a peculiar aroma and acts as a very active stimulant to the surface of the skin as to cause the complete di gestion cf the liquid. Men employed in an atmosphere of the intensest heat are much comforted with it, and become very fond of it. Hence it is in a measure "victuals and drink," possessing only vir tues and without any drawbacks whatever. Just now the time is here to give it a trial; and we shall be glad if at the end of the season those substituting the oat meal and water will make report as to the rz•sults —Wintry Genth nzan. Onions. From our own experience, and the observation of others, we can fully indorse the I, stimony of the St. Louis Miller, on the healthful properties of the above escu lent. Lung and liver complaints are cer tainly benefitted, often cured, by a free consumption of onions, either cooked or raw. Colds yield to them like magic. Don't be afraid of them. Taken _at night all offense will be wanting by morning, and the good effects will amply compensate for the trifling annoyance. Taken regularly they greatly promote the health of the lungs and digestive organs An extract made by boiling down the juice of onions to a syrup, and taken as a medicine, an swers the purpose very well, but fried, roasted, ur boiled onions are better. Onions are very cheap medicine, within everybody's reach, and they are not by any means as "bad to take" as the costly nos trums a neglect of their use may necessi tate. EARLY POTATOES.—"I confine myself to the cultivation of early potatoes fir the main crop. Why cultivate a potato that requires the entire season to mature when we can just as well have the crop in market by August, in time fir early reeding to turnip', grain or grass ? I have grown a fool crop of winter cabbages following the early 9hios. This double cropping only requires liberal manuring and a lively movement on the part of the cultivator."— Ii . A day is a wheel in the great machinery of life,—a link in the chain of my probation. It is as truly a part of vital and essential being as a year or a century. The day is given me. Will it vanish at my bidding? I did not originate it; I only received it. I have "no more power to blot it nut than to bring it in. It was a gift. "Thcre is a man," said his neighbor, speaking of a village carpenter, "who has done more good, I really believe, in this community, than any other person who ever lived in it. He cannot talk very well in prayer meeting, and he doesn't often try! Ile isn't worth two thousand dollars, and it's very little he can put down on sub• seliption papers fir any object. But a new family never moves into the village that he does not fiad them out, to give them a neighborly welcome, and offer any little service he can render.
