The Huntingdon Journal. I,arm anb• Al3llsCipitt. Cultivate Wheat. At the regular monthly inceti lig of the Lancaster County Agricultural Society, recently held, Mr. L. W. Groff a practical farmer, made the following report, as to his experiments in raising wheat, which we clip from the Nw Era. "I have threshed the wheat grown on one acre, and it made sixty-one bushels and one peck. It is the "Champion Amber variety." The seed was obtained from Mr. Ileiges, of York, at $5 per bushel. One anl a half bushels were planted on the acre reported. Mr. Ileiges succeeded, in raising 71 bushels of this wheat to the acre. I cultivated this wheat in the spring of the year, three times between the drill rows. The cultivated "Clawson" variety, sown by me last fall, and now threshed, yielded 36} bushels per acre. The same variety, not cultivated, yielded 25 bushels and two pounds per acre. It is my opinion that the "Champion Amber," if raised under very favorable conditions, will yield from 75 to 80 pushels per acre. Mine this 3ear stood on ground a little too tow, and :t was sowed a little too late. I have no doubt that such a yield is quite possible and probable, and if all the grains in my present reported crop were plump and fu::, my yield would be 'at . least 75 bushels per acre this year." The committee appointed to visit Mr. Greffs farm and report on the method of cultivating wheat practiced by him, re ported as follows : "We, the undersigned, visited the farm of Mr. Groff about harvest time, and fully smeur in his report so far as we could judge at that time." _ D. N . ENGLE, CALIV IN COOPER , L. S. REIST, P. S. DEIST. A vote of thanks was given to Mr. Groff by the Society for his experiment, and his care in making the results public• _ _ Mr. Engle hoped that Mr. Groff had opened a new era in wheat culture, and that its example would be widely followed. It has now been proven that it pays to cultivate wheat. Let the farmers take up this subject and continue the experiment. Our wheat crop can be largely increased Improving Improving Farms. On this subject one of our exchanges thus alludes to the profit of fixing up about the buildings and farm—an item too often neglected because it is not properly appreciated by many who claim that it "does not pay" : "How few farmers improve their farms to the extent they might do if they had the requisite energy and perseverence ! Let us suppose a case. Mr. A. buys a farm that is "run down," the land is poor, s the farm club of repair, the house going to ruin, the barn leaky, no orchard, no garden worthy of the name, fields grown up to briars, no underdrain ing ever thought of, swamps in various places, land rocky, or too rough for a mowing machine—all the typical ch?tracter or a man who is not fit to own a rod of land. Ten years pass, and we again ex amine this farm ; and what do we behold ? The rocky and rough fields are as smooth as a lawn; the grass is luxuriant; marshes and males have disappeared by ditching and underdraining ; fine fences over the entire farm greet the eye ; a young orchard is just coming into bearing ; the dwelling is tainted and blinded; shade and fruit trees adorn the yard ; the barn and out houses look comfortable, and are in good repair ; a substantial picket fence sur rounds the house and garden, and every. thing denotes thrift and comfort ! How was the great improvement effected ? Simply by persistent labor at odd ti me s, when the crops did not need special atten tion, and the improved crops from year to year, obtained by a thorough system of farming, paid the entire expenses. Had Mr. B. or Mr. C. bought this farm, it is, probable that it F ould to day be the same old forlorn and "run down' place. It is energyiand brains that effect such results; and many farmers could do the same if they would wake up and bestir themselves " If the owner wishes to sell it will always pay, and if ha does not the lesson given to his children and their increased interest in the common home of the family will more than repay the expense. Care of Harness, Take newts foot oil and ivory black— the latter well pulverized, or to be made so before using. Mix thoroughly—adding the black until the oil is well colored, or quite black. In cool weather the oil should be warmed somewhat before mix_ ing. With a sponge apply a light opt of the mixture—only what the leather will readily absorb, unless the harness is very dry—in which case a heavy coat may be necessary. After the harnesq is dry— which will be in from two hours to a half or a whole day, depending upon the weather and previous condition of the leather wash thoroughly with soap suds. In mak ing the suds use good castile soap and cold rain water. (Warm water should never be used on harness leather.) Apply the sids with a sponge. Rub off with buck skin. This will give your harness a nice glossy surface, and the leather will retain a good color and continue pliable for month.. If it becomes soiled with mud or sweat, an applicatitin of soap and water, as above directed (without oiling), will be sufficient to keep harness, as ordinarily used, in good order. AEHES.—Do not allow ashes of any kind to be wasted. It will pay to haul leached ashes several miles, when one has his own team and a laborer at fair wages. Cwd'►ashes when spread around berry bashes of any sort, or cronnd grape vines, will aid materially in producing large and fair fruit.—Gardener's Monthly. MUFFINS.—Two cupfuls of buttermilk, 1 tablespoonful thick cream. 1 egg well beaten, small tablespoonful salt, 2 even tea spoonfuls of soda, 2i cupfuls of flour, or sufficieni to make a batter a little thicker than ter griddle cakes. VEGETINE Strikes at the root of di4oase by purifying the blood, re storing the liver and kidneys to healthy action, invigorat ing the nervous system. VEGETINE Is not a vile, nauseous compound which simply purp the bowels, but a safe, pleasant remedy, which is sure to purify the bits,d, and thereby restore the health. VEGETINE Is now prescribed, in cases of Scrofula and other diSeWied of the blood, by riAny of the hest physicians, owing to its gre,tt sucrose in curing all diseases of this nature. VEGETENE Does not deceive invalids into false hopes by purging and creating a fictitious appetite, but assists nature in cloaring and purifying the whole system, leading the patient grad ually to perfect health. VEGETIN E Was looked upon as an experiment for some time by some of our best physicians, but those most incredulous in re gard to its merit are now its inset ardent friends and sup porters. VEGETINE Instead of being a puffed-np medicine, has worked its way up to 144 presentastonishing success by actual merit in curing all diseases of the blood, of whatever nature. VEGETINE, Says a Boston physician, "line no equal as a blood purifi er. fearing of its many wonderful cures, after all other remedies had failed, I visited the laboratory, and convinc ed myself of its genuine merit. It is prepared from barks, roots, and herbs, each of which is highly effective; and they are compounded iu Both a manner as to produce as tonishing results." EG ETINE Is acknowledged and recommended by physicians and apothecaries to be the best purifier and cleamer of the blood yet discovered, and thousands speak in its praise who have been restored to health. PROOF. WHAT IS NEEDED, MR. H. R. STEVENS. Dear Sir:—About one year since, I found myself in a feeble condition from general debility. Vegetine was strongly recommended to me by a friend who had been much benefitted by its use. I procured the article, and after using several bottles was restored to health, and dis continued its use. I feel quite confident that there is no medicine superior to it for those complaints fbr which it is especially prepared, and would cheerfully rocommendit to those who feel that they need something to restore them to perfect health. Dear Sir,—My only object in glviEg you this testimo nial-is to spread valuable information. Having been badly afflicted with Salt Rheum, and the whole surface of my skin being covered with pimples and eruptions, many of which caused me great pain and annoyance, and knowing it to be a blood disease, 1 took many of the advertised blood preparations, among which was any quantity of Sarsaparilla, without obtaining any benefit until I corn menecd taking the VEGITINE ; and before I had completed the first bottle I saw that I had got the right medicine. Consequently I followed on with it until I had taken seven bottles, when I was pronounced a well man ; and my skin is smooth, and entirely free from pimples and erup t.ons. I have never enjoyed so good health before, and 1 attribute it all to the use of VEOETINE. To benefit those aßlicted with Rheumatism I will make mention also of the VEGETINE'S wonderful power of curing me of this acute complaint, of which I have suffer ed so intensEly. C. TUCKER, Pass.
