Farm Hints.
A fourteen•ton cheese is the mite that
Ohio will contribute to the Centennial.
Use only fresh seed and do not use any
that is one or two years old, is tho advice
given by a farmer.
Tho manure from animals fed on cooked
or steamed food is not so valuable as from
animals fed on whole or ground grain in
the raw state.
There is no better way of killing out
quack or wire grassthan to summer fallow
the land. Sometimes it will require two
seasons and very thorough work; still it
can be killed in this way.
A rich, well pulverized, clean, and ra
ther stiff loam is best for onions. The
seed should be sown in rows nine or ten
inches apart (some sow one foot) and four
to to six inches apart in the row.
Don't forget at this season to take the
best care of your colts. They need the
best feed of the whole season. Don't
think it will pay to let the colts go out
into the fields and pick old foggy grass.
Pure Berkshire hogs should be jet
black in color, with a thick-set coat of fine
black hair, but choose one with coarse
hair, rather than one that is short of hair.
The reason why black wool is not worth
as much as white wool of the same quality
is, says the Country Gentleman, that black
wool cannot be bleached and will take no
other color perfectly.
It has been fully proven on the farm
that the deposits of a hen are worth her
feeed, when used as a fertilizer. In other
words, and as our friend Dickens would
say, not to put too fine a point upon it, a
check for the amount of her deposits, pre
sented to the gardener's bank, should be
fully honored to the amount of its face.
Peccavi I
A correspondent who keeps about fifteen
hundred fowls on his farm, a few miles
from Chicago, tells the Prairie Farmer,
that he has finally settled on two breeds,
the Bramah and the Leghorn. His flock
'a separated into three lots, and notwith
standing the great number there has never
been a case of cholera, and little trouble
with other diseases.
Fodder for cattle of chopped straw and
hay is being mixed in Belgium just now
with good wheaten flour, and allowed to
ferment for twenty-four hours somewhere
adjoining the stables. The aroma rising
from this mixture is said to tickle the ani
mals' palates and set their mouths water
ing; and, seasoned with a little pulp, this
food is as economical as it is nutritive.
Bee Industry.
In comparison with many other branch
es of business, this, at the first blush, might
be considered of small account, but when
it is taken into consideration that now,
more than ever, provision is to be made
for the suitable employment of a large
class of our population, particularly fe
males, who are thrown upon their own
personal exertions for a support, and to
none can there be a more interesting and
appropriate business than that of bee cul
ture and poultry raising, particularly at the
South, and we would wish to see its exten
sion more diffused than at present. As it
is, the product is of no small proportions,
and can be increased to an almost unlimi
ted extent. The President of the North
American Beekeepers' Association at Pitts
burgh, in his remarks before that body,
says that for ages past organizations have
been effected by our best men to develop
the various agricultural resources of the
land; and during the same period the
most industrious bees of our Continent
have been consigned to the ignomy of a
death by fire and brimstone.
If apiarians had given the time and at
tention in selecting the males and females
of the largest and most industrious, pro
lific and docile colonies to breed from,
with the same care, shrewdness and atten
tion that has been practiced with horses,
cattle, sheep, hogs and poultry, we would
not be under the necessity of importing
queens from Italy, bat would have a race
of bees much superior to the Italians
Man cannot obtain labor from any other
source as ()heap as from the honey bee.—
They work for nothing and board them
selves, only requiring house rent free.
Possessing, as we do in America, a ge
nial climate and a fertile soil, susceptible
of the production of richly varied honey
producing plants and flowers, with a due
degree of knowledge and enterprise, the
bees could be increased to an extent that
the profit arrising therefrom would pay all
our taxes and supply our table daily with
one of the choicest luxuries of life.
Bee keeping although not so popular a
pursuit as many others, is none less edify
ing and profitable. The honey bee is al
most the only insect that has been domes
ticated by man, and aside from its giving
us wealth and delicious luxury, it posses
ses many charms and is a study for the
naturalist. This is only the fourth ses
sion of a continental society in our land
for the purpose of investigating and learn
ing of the wonders of this little insect.
TRAVELING ON THE FARM.—Did any
of you ever think of the amount of travel
it takes to raise a crop of corn ? I never
saw an illustration in print, and I thought
I would give you one. I have a twenty
acre field, 40480 rods. To break this up
would take 165 miles; harrowing it, about
40 miles; furrowing out, 90 miles; plant
ing, 45 miles; if with a planter, and if
dropped and then oovered, 90 miles. Thus,
you see, it takes about 800 or 900 miles
of travel to raise twenty acres of corn, not
counting going to or returning from the
field. Besides, there are replanting, thin
ning, rolling, etc.
