• Pruning
There is less correct knowledge among
cultivators of the habits and natures of
growth of trees than of any other depart
ment of farming. With regard to prun
ing there is one infallible guide. viz : Nev
er prune a tree when the saw you are us
ing will keep bright. That proves that
the pores of the wood are full of thin sap.
If they are then cut, the sap will run out.
When shall we prune? When the sap is
thick, and will gum up the saw, so that it
will need washing once or twice in two or
three hours. The Alin sap has then as
cended to swell the buds, and expand the
blossoms and leaves, and having perform
ed its required labor there, what portion
remains, but in a thickened form—returns
down under the'outside bark, and increas
es in diameter. Tbo sap vessels are now
comparatively empty, and the tree can be
pruned, if judiciously done, without much
injury.
Shortening in the trees is another mat
ter. That may be done in most trees at
any time without much harm, as none of
the large vessels are cut, and the leaves be.
low the place cnt would be likely to absorb
the passing sap. The downward motion of
the sap takes place about the middle of
June. Then the sap vessels are compar
atively empty. After the leaves have fal
len in the autumn they are in a similar
condition.—New England Farmer.
How to Prevent Spring Disease,
It is an indisputable physiological truth
that if the instincts of nature were yielded
to in the spring—were cherished in her
desire to take less and less food as the
weather grows warmer, as they are yielded
to in the autumn in having more, a very
large amount of the diseases of spring and
summer would be avoided. Tho great
practical lesson to be learned in reference
to the sobject, a question of health and dis
ease, yes, in multitudes of cases, a question
of life and death, is simply this :As the
winter passes, and the balmy spring time
comes on, do nothing to increase the appe
tite, eat no more than is called for; do not
be uneasy because you have no relish for
your food; eat less every day. The very
best way to increase your pleasure of eat
ing is to change the quality of your food.
Use articles less carbonaceous; less warm
ing ; send from your table the pork and
bacon, the meats and oils, and sugars, and
starches, and sago, and tapica pudding,
and the dumplings, and the rich pastries;
get hold of the early 'greens,', and spinach,
the salads, the turnip tops, the radish, the
early berry, and the early fruit, and lean
meats; pay increasing attention to the
cleanliness of the skin ; be more in the
open air: sleep in better ventilated rooms;
let your inner doors be left wide open.
Principles Governing Rotation
1. However well a soil may be prepar
ed, it cannot long nourish crops of, the
same kind in succession without becoming
exhausted.
2. Every crop impoverishes u soil more
or less, according as more or less is restor
ed to the soil by the plant cultivated.
3. Perpendicular rooting plants and
such as root horizontally ought to succeed
each other.
4. Plants of the same kind should not
return too frequently in rotation.
5. Two plants favorable to the growth
of weeds ought not to succeed each other.
6. Such plants as eminently exhaust
the soil, as the grams and oil plants, should
only be sown when the land is in good
heart.
7. In proportion as a soil is found to ex
haust itself by successive crops, plants
which are least exhausted should be culti
vated.
Our farmers have only to keep these
seven fundamental principles in mind in
order to keep their land rich fir all time.
—St. Louis Glolac.
Cure the Baby's Cold.
When your little baby or child is suffer
ing with a cold, and can scarcely breathe,
do not dose it with all sorts of medicines,
but try this simple remedy—the bust we'
ever knew :
Take a raw carrot, cut the top off smoott),
and with a knife dig or scrape out the pith
or light-colored centre, making a hole in
the carrot large enough to take in your
largest finger. Fill the hole with white
sugar, then suspend or stand the carrot up
in a cool place. In about twelve hour s
the sugar will be dissolved, and the cavity
in the carrot will be filled with a pure,
golden-colored syrup. Give the child from
six to twelve drops of this, from four to
eix times a day, according to the age of
the child and the severity of the cold. We
have seen this pleasant remedy, which chil
dren readily take, because it is pure and
sweet, cure cases of colds after other rem
edies have been given for weeks in vain.
It is comparatively a uew remedy, but so
efficacious it seems a duty to the public to
make it known. If the syrup be kept in
a warm room, it will sour in a few days,
when it should not be used, but new made
from another carrot.
Horseradish.
A correspondent of •The Garden' (Lon
don) says: "It may not be generally
known that if leaves or litter be placed on
the tops of horseradish crowns two feet or
so thick, the plants grow through them in
ate course of the summer, making small
white roots the thickness of one's finger,
which are as tender as spring radishes, and
mach to be preferred to the tough, stringy
stuff usually supplied with our roast beef."
IT is well known that leather articles
'kept in stables soon become brittle, in con
sequence of ammoniaeal exhalations, which
affect both harness hanging up in such lo
calities and the shoes of those who fre
quent them. The usual applications of
grease are not always sufficient to meet
this difficulty; but it is said that by add
ing to them a small quantity of glycerine
the leather will be kept continually in a
.soft and pliable condition.

VINEGAR BITTERS-PURELY
VEGETABLE-FREE FROM ALCOHOL
DR. WALKER'S CALIFORNIA VINEGAR BITTERS.
Vinegar Bitters are not a vile Fancy Drink, made
of Poor Rum, Whiskey, Proof Spirits and Refuse
Liquors, doctored, spiced. and sweetened to please
the taste, called "Tonics," "Appetizers," "Restor
ers," Ac., that lead the tippler on to drunkenness
and ruin, but area true Medicine, made from the
native roots and herbs of California, free from all
Alcoholic Stimutents. They are the Great Blood
Purifier and a Life-giving Principle, a Perfect
Renovator and Invigorator of the System, carry
ing off all poisonous matter and restoring the
blood to a healthy condition, enriching it, refresh
ing and invigorating both mind and body. They
are easy of administration, prompt in their action,
certain in their results, safe and reliable in all
forms of disease.
No Person can take these Bitters according to
directions, and remain long unwell, provided their
bones are not destroyed by mineral poison or other
means, and the vital organs wasted beyond the
point of repair.
Dyspepsia or lialyeetion. Headache, Pain in the
Shoulders, Coughs, Tightness of the Chest, Diz
ziness, Sour Fructations of the Stomach, Bad
Taste in the Month, Billions Attacks, Palpitation
of the Heart, Intlamation of the Lungs, Pain in
the regions of the Kidneys, and a hundred other
painful symptoms, are the offsprings of Depepsia.
In these complaints it has no equal, and one bot
tle will prove a better guarantee of its merits than
a lengthy advertisement.
For Amain Complaint?, in young or old, mar
ried or single, at the dawn of womanhood, or the
turn of life, these Tonic Bitters display so decided
an inflaenee that a marked improvement is soon
perceptible.
For Inflammatory and Chronic Ilheuniatinui and
Gout, Dyspepsia or Indigestion, Bilious, Remit
tent and Intermittent Fevers, Diseases of the
Blood, Liver, Kidneys and Bladder, these Bitters
have been most successful. Such Diseases are
caused by Vitiated Blood, which is generally pro
duced by derangement of the Digestive Organs.
They area Gentle Purgative an well se a Tonic,
possessing also the peculiar merit of acting as a
powerful agent in relieving Congestion of the
Liver and Visceral Organs, and in Bilious Diseases.
For Skin Disease; Eruptions, Totter, Salt
Rheum, Blotches, Spots, Pimples. Pustules, Boils,
Carbuncles, Ring-worms, Scald-Head, Soro Eyes,
Erysipelas, Itch, Scurfs, Disco!orations of the
Skin, Humors and Diseases of the Skin, of what
ever name or nature, are literally dug tip and car
ried out of the system in a short time by the use
of these Bitters. One bottle in such eases wil
convince the most incredulous of their curative
etreets.
Cleanse the Vitiated Blood whenever you find
its impurities bursting through the skin in Pim
ples, Eruptions, or Sores ; cleanse it when you find
it obstructed and sluggish in the veins; cleanse it
when it is foul; your feelings will tell you when.
Keep the blood pure, and the health of the system
will follow.
Grateful thousands proclaim Vinegar Bitters the
most wonderful Invigorant that ever sustained
the sinking system.
Pin, Tape, and other Worms, lurking in the
system of so many thousands, are effectually de
stroyed and removed. Says a distinguished phy
siologist t There is scarcely an individual upon
the face of the earth whose body is exempt from
the presence of worms. It is not upon the healthy
elements of the body that worms exist, but upon
the diseased humors and slimy deposits that breed
these living monsters of disease. No system of
Medicine, no vermifnge, no anthelminitire, will
free the system from worms like these Bitters.
Mechanical Disease.. Persons engaged in Paints
and Minerals, such as Plumbers, Type-setters
Gold-beaters, and Miners, as they advance in life,
will be subject to paralysis of the Bowels. To
guard against this take a dose of Walker's Vinegar
Bitters ones or twice a week, as a preventive.
Bilious, Remittent and Intermittent Freers, which
are so prevalent in the valleys of our great rivers
throughout the United States, especially those of
the Mississippi, Ohio, Missouri,lllinois Tennes
see, Cumberland, Arkansas, lied, Colorado, Brasos,
Rio Grande, Pearl, Alabama, Mobile, Savannah,
Roanoke, James, and many others, with their
vast tributaries, throughout our entire country
during the Summer and Autumn, and remarkably
so dining seasons of unwindl heat and dryness,
are invariably accompanied by extensive derange
ments of the stomach and liver, and other abdom
inal viscera. There are always more or less ob
structions of the liver, a weakness and irritable
state of the stomach, and great torper of the bow
els, being clogged up with vitiated accumulations.
In their treatment, a purgative, exerting a power
ful influence upon these various organs, is essen
tially necessary. There is no cathartic for the
purpose equal to Dr. J. Walker's Vinegar Bitters,
as they will speedily remove the dark-colored
viscid matter with which the bowels are loaded, at
the same time stimulating the secretions of the
liver, and generally restoring the healthy func
tions of the djgestive organs.
Scrofula, or King's Evil, White Swellings, Ul
cers, Erysipelas, Swelled Neck, Goiter, Scrofulous
Inffamations, Indolent Intlamations, Mercurial Af
fections,Old Sores, Eruptions of the Skin, Sore
Eyes, eta., etc. In these, as in all other constitu
tional Diseases, Walker's Vinegar Bitters have
shown their great curative powers in the most ob
stinate and intractable cases.
Dr. Walker's California Vinegar Bitters act on
all these eases in a similar manner. By purifying
the Blood they remove the cause, and by resolving
away the effects of the indamation (the tubercular
deposits) the affected parts receive health, and a
permanent sure is effected.
Tic properties of Dr. Walker's Vinegar Bitters
are Aperient, Diaphoretic and Carminative, Nu
tritious, Laxative, Diuretic, Sedative, Counter-Ir
ritant Sudorific, Alterative, and Anti-Bilious.
The, Aperient and mild Laxative proprieties of
Dr. Walker's Vinegar Bitters are the best safe
guard in all cases of eruptions and maglignant
fevers, their balsamic, healing, and soothing prop
erties protect the humors of the faeces. Their
Sedative properties allay pain in the nervous sys
tem, stomach, and bowels, either from inflame-
Lion, wind, colic, cramps, etc. Their Counter-Ir
ritant influence extends throughout the system.
Their Diuretic properties act on the Kidneys, cor
recting and regulating the flow of urine. Their
Anti-Bilious properties stimulate the liver, in the
secretion of bile, and its discharges through the
bibliary ducts, and are superior to all remedial
agents, for the cure of Bilious Fever, Fever and
Ague, etc.
