The Huntingdo — u Journ.4l, tuna mul g•onotholti. Preparing the Land for Grasa, We are apt. very apt, to overlook the fact that land intended for grass should receive more thorough culture than any other, because for years while in grass, it hat} not the advantage of the plow and other implements to stir the soil, but must rest and back, and get more and more in a condition to keep out the air, and let in and pass off less readily the water. We should, therefore, thoroughly prepare the soil, plow as deep as may be, and subsoil well; pulverize and enrich the soil—en riching it will make it more loose and mel low, and keep it longer in that condition, as well as increase the yield. Such land will catch its seed, and if plentifully ap plied, will be certain, under anything like favorable circumstances to form a thick set. A little top dressing, aided by the atter math, which should never be fed close, will ensure good crops—two cuttings a year. Bat let there be a cold, hard undersell, and the seed put in the usual way—little of it, on a harsh reduced soil, without manure, what can be expected ? Just what we see; light crops, getting lighter every year until it will hardly pay for har vesting. Such land, when the plow turns it down, will be found to be hard. The sod amounts to but little, whereas in pro perly treated land it will yield from sixty to seventy loads of manure per acre. A mellow seed bed deeply loosened soil well enriched, plenty of seed sown as early as possible—are the points to be secured in putting down grass land.—The Rural World. Fluctuations in Wool A correspondent deplores the effect upon the sheep interests of the fluctuations in wool which have marked the previous history of this country, and declares the great necessity of the country, to be stabil ity and uniformity. This is all true enough, and to secure this stability and uniformity sheep-growers should resist all change in the tariff laws. They have been one fruit ful source of change and uncertainty, and it would seem as if the Government could not adhere to one line of policy in refer ence to the wool interest. But the tariff has not been the only source of these fluc tuations. The enormous production in south America, Australia, and Africa, have at times broken down the foreign markets to such a point as to seriously in fluence the American market, even when protected by the most stringent tariff. This matter, however, appears to have reg ulated itself; and if we may judge by the condition of foreign wool markets, there is very little prospect that the interests of American wool-growers will be seriously affected, for many years to come, by ex cessive productions in the southern hemis phere. There never was a time, in our estimation, when the outlook was more favorable to the stability and prosperity of American sheep husbandry than the present.—National Live Stock. Journal. Cure Dogs of Killing Sheep , If you have a good dog that kills or runs sheep and don't want to shoot him, build pen sixteen feet square, and run pole across the top, and then pick the largest and oldest buck of the flock, put him in the pen, get your dog with a col lar around his neck, and rope to draw up over the middle of the pole, so that the dog will have his fore feet swinging off of the ground a few inches. Get out of the pen, and let the buck give him several good butts, and then turn him loose.— This is a sure cure. I tried it on my father's dogs when I was a boy; never knew them to even cross a field where the sheep were grazing. Try it.— (hr. Rural Sun. Buz. how is it that a horse, that con sumes eight times as much food and has sight times the force or power of a man, only costs as much as one man annually, or 16s per week ? I suppose it is because he _wears no clothes, except Nature's, drinks no sugared tea, coffee, beer, spirits, or milk; smokes no pipe, eats no meat, butter, cheese or bread, has no washing or mending bill ;.his shoes are of iron instead of leather; pen, ink, paper and postage stamps, newspapers or books form no part of his expenditure; has no doctor's bill to pay, and no family to feed, clothe and educate ; births, marriages and burials are to him cost free ; his rent and taxes are moderate. We must therefore conclude that man, as a motive power or force, is much too expensive an article to be profit able as a substitute for horse or steam power, whether in cultivation or mann factures.—Mecki Tools and Machines, Hunt up every implement that will be wanted for use on the farm, and wee if it is in good order. If not so. it is a better time to have it repaired now than when the men and teams are waiting for it. If you have a bench and tools—and how can you get along without them ?—you may be able to do the job yourself, and thus save time in carrying it away and bringing it back, and save the money required to pay the mechanic. Besides this, as there al ways re broken tools, the mechanic may have so many on hand to repair that there may be a week of anxious suspense in waiting for them. Ironing Shirt Fronts , In a first-class laundry starch is made in the usual manner ; to a pail of starch a whole sperm candle is need. When the linen is dry, it is dipped in the cold starch And ironed in the ordinary way; then it is 'dampened with a cloth, and the polishing iron pressed over it. This is an ordinary smoothing-iron, ground off so that the edges are all rounding. To this last man ipulation the linen is indebted for the pe culiar laundry gloss which all admire so much, but which many housekeepers have - vainly striven to leave upon the wristbands .and bosoms of their husband's shirts. 7N2iscellaueous. INEGAB BITTERS-PURELY VEGETABLE-FREE FROM ALCOHOL OR. WALKERS CALIFORNIA VINEGAR BITTERS. l'inegar hitters are not a vile Fancy Drink, made of Poor Ram, Whiskey, Proof Spirits and Refuse Liquors, doctored, spiced, and sweetened to please the taste, called "Tonics," "Appetizers," "Restor ers," 5:3., that lead the tippler on to drunkenness and ruin, but are a true Medicine, made from the native roots and herbs of California, free from all Alcoholic Stimulents. They are the Great Blood Purifier and a Life-giving Principle, a Perfect Renovator and Invigorator of the System, carry ing off all. poisonous matter and restoring the blood to a healthy condition, enriching it, refresh ing and invigorating both mind and body. They are easy of administration, prompt in their action, certain in their results, rate and reliable in all forms of disease. No Person can take these hitters according to directions, and remain long unwell, provided their hones are not destroyed by mineral poison or other means, and the vital organs wasted beyond the point of repair. Uppepeia or ludgestiou. Headache. Pain in the Shoulders, Coughs, Tightness of the Chest, Diz ziness, Sour Eructations of the Stomach, Bad Taste in the Mouth, Billions Attacks, Palpitation of the Heart, Inflamariou of the Lunge, Pain in the regions of the Kidneys, and a hundred other painful symptoms, are the offsprings of Depepsia. In these complaints it has no equal. and one bot tle will prove a better guarantee of its merits than a lengthy advertisement. For Female Complaint*, in young or old, mar ried or single, at the dawn of womanhood, or the turn of life, these Tonic Bitters display so decided an influence thlt a marked improvement is soon perceptible. For bylananatory and Chronic Bheunsatian and Gout, Dyspepsia or Indigestion, Bilious, Remit tent and Intermittent Feveis, Diseases of the Blood, Liver, Kidneys and Bladder, these Bitters have been most successful. Such Diseases are caused by Vitiated Blood, which is generally pru duced by derangement of the Digestive Organs. They arc a Gentle Purgative as well as a Tonic, possessing also the peculiar merit of acting as a powerful agent in relieving Congestion of the Liver and Visceral Organs, and in Bilious Diseases. For Skin Disean; Eruptions, Tatter, Salt Rheum, Blotches, Spots. Pimples. Pustules, Boils, Carbuncles, Ring-worms, Scald-Bead. Sore Eyes, Erysipelas, Itch, Scuds, Discoloration! of the Skin, Humors and Diseases of the Skin, of what ever name or nature, are literally dug up and car ried out of the system in a short time by the use of these Bitters. One bottle in such eases .wil convince the most incredulous of their curative effects. Cleanse the Vitiated Blood whenever you find its impurities bursting through the skin in Pim ples, Eruptions, or Sores ; cleanse it when you find it obstructed and sluggish is the veins; cleanse it when it is foul; your feelings will tell you when. Keep the blood pure, .d the health of the system will follow. Grateful thousands proclaim Vinegar Bitters the most wonderful lovigorant that ever sustained the sinking system. Pin, Tape, and other IVorme, lurking in the system of so many thousands, are effectually de stroyed and removed. Says a distinguished phy siolosist There is scarcely an individual °pox the face of the earth whose body is exempt from the presence of worms. It is nut upon the healthy elements of the body that worms exist, but upon the diseased humors and slimy deposits that breeti these living monsters of disease. No system of Medicine, no vermifuge, no anthelminities, will free the system from worms like these Bitters. Mechanical Diseases. Persons engaged in Paints and Minerals, such as Plumbers,Type-setters Gold-beaters, and Miners, as they do.. in life, will be subject to paralysis of the Bowels. To guard against this take a dose of Walker's Vinegar Bitters once or twi.a week, as a preventive. Bilious, Remittent and Intermittent Fevers, which are so prevalent in the valleys of our great rivers throughout the United States, especially those of the Misaissippi, Ohio, Missouri, Illinois, Tennes see, Cumberland, Arkansas, Red, Colorado, Brazos, Rio Grande, Pearl, Alabama, Mobile, Savannah, Roanoke, James, and many others, with their vast tributaries, throughout our entire country during the Summer and Autumn, and remarkably so during seasons of unusual beat and dryness, are invariably accompanied by extensive derange ments of the stomach and liver, and other abdom inal viscera. There are always more or leas ob etructions of the liver, a weakness and irritable state of the stomach, and great torper of the bow els, tieing clogged up with vitiated accumulations. In their treatment, a purgative, exerting a power ful influence upon these various organs, is essen tially necessary. There is no cathartic for the purpose equal to Dr. J. Walker's Vinegar Bitter. as they will speedily remove the dark-colored viscid matter with which the bowels are loaded, at the same time stimulating the secretions of the liver, and generally restoring the healthy func tions of the digestive organs. Scrofula, or King's Ben, While Swellings, Ul cers, Erysipelas, Swelled Neck, Goiter, Scrofulous Inflamations, Indolent Inflamations,Mercurial Af fections, Old Sores, Eruptions of the Skin, Sore Eyes, ete., ete. In these, 1101 in all other constitu tional Diseases, Walker's Vinegar Bitters have shown their great curative powers in the most ob stinate and intractable cases. In. Walker's Califlornia Vinegar Bitters not on all these eases in a similar manner. By purifying the Blood they remove the cause, and by resolving away the effects of the inflamation (the tubercular deposits) the affected parts receive health, and a permanent cure is effected. The properties of Dr. Walker's Vinegar Bitters are Apirient, Diaphoretic and Carminative, Nu tritious, Laxative, Diuretic, Sedative, Counter-Ir ritant Sudorific, Alterative, and Anti-Biliou, The, Aperien t and mild Laxative proprieties of Dr. Walker's Vinegar Bitters are the best safe guard in all eases of eruptions and niaglignant fevers, their balsamic, healing, and soothing prop erties protect the humors of the fauces.
