Tho Huntingdon Journal. germ null X3oliorlalil. Food and Health Bulk, as well as elements of nourish ment; is essential in food. Neither cattle nor horses could be kept alive long on fine flour, meal, or grains of any kind. _Mixed, however, with grass, dry hay, or straw, they thrive. The walls of the stomach and bowels must be kept apart in order to have perfect digestion. A dog lived twenty-one days, the only survivor of a wrecked ves sel at sea, closely shut up in the cabin, by eating the thick, strong wood and leath er binding of a Bible. Had he had plen , y of hard brad, he would probably hire died in about fifteen days, as the muci* surface of the digestive apparatus. by com ing in contact, would have inflamed fear fully. Those persons whose diet is rather cirirse, as bread of unbolted ft ,ur, large fruit eat, ers, bread and milk people in the country. etc., are exempt from• pains of dyspepsia. Thosa sustained mainly on very fine con centrated, delis ite fond, washed down with tea, are gaunt in form, weak in mu-ole and always taking mediciue. Their food should have more bulk. A poor man's family never la. k for an appetite with a crust of brown bread. neighbor's darlings, surfeited on rich cake, highly seas 'fled dishes and nurtu-ed iii luxury, are the life of doctors and drm:- gists. So s .ys science -- The Household. Catchi,ag Cold. The great secret of keeping from catch ing cold consists in not exposing one's sell to sudden extremes of temperature, CM tinually, as much as possible. Don't a , one time have a roaring fire andeverybod) in the room perspiring, and the next mo ment the dampers all off, and everybody shivering. Better have the atmosphere at sixty degrees and keep it there, than to have it first at sixty and then at eight or ninety. and then back to sixty again. The regulation of the fire at night is also of some importance, particularly where there are children. Some families allow their fires to go out completely during the night, and the temperature of their rooms falls often to the freezing point on cold nights, while during the day it was up to seventy or eighty. Such changes are bad for little ones, for their lungs are incapa ble of enduring it, and when such practi ces are indulged in children are continual ly troubled with some lung or throat dif ficulty, and often grow up only to fall the victims of consumption as a consequence. If people would only remember this great rule of sudden extremes of temperament. they would save themselves many useless doctor's bills and fits of sickness. Pulling at the Halter, A year ago I hid a fiur-year old hors, wl.i:h contracted the habit of pulling back whenever she was. fastened. She would be sure to break loos3 if what held hi-r could be broken by her drawing in such a backward way. She was cured of the habit by taking a rope two feet long, fast ening one end around her body just back of her shoulders, and passing the other end through the ring of the halter and tying to the post. She lay back for hei usual pull for a few times when fixed this way but soon found she was drawing from her body instead of her head, whirl she did not relish, and soon gave it up en tirely. She can now be left anywhere ic perfect safety. as nothing will induce hei to pull back when fastened.—Uor. Of Country Gentleman. Curo for a Felon. As soon 'as discovered take some spirit of turpentine in a cup, dip the finger in it. then hold the hand near a hot fire till dry then dip it in again and repeat for fifteei minutes, or till the pain ceases.. The neat day, with a sharp knife, pare off the thick skin and you will find something like honey comb filled with clear water, open the cells and the felon is gone. ANOTHEIL-If the felon is too far ad vanced for turpentine, oil of Origanium. treated in the came way, will cure. I too far advanced for either to cure, the felon will be ,benefitted, as it will be lea painful. Never draw it. Lamp Chimneys, The reason why chimneysso often break is, that they are not thoroughly annealed and like a good many other things an made to sell. This defect may be partial!) remedied by wrapping a cloth around them, or a little straw, and then put then in a saucepan of cold water, with as mricl salt as it will dissolve, and gradually brir4, it to boiling heat, at which it may be kept for some hours, and then allowed gradual ly to cool. The cloth or straw is to pre serve it from bumping against the sauce pan and breaking, when boiling, and the salt enables the water to take a higher de gree of heat. Farmers' Wives' Clubs At Oatka Falls , Kansas, they have n club composed of farmers' wive.. The society meets once a month at the houses of the members in regular succession, take their lunch baskets and have a sort of pic nic supper, so as to give little trouble t• the hottess. A regular subject connected with the management of the domestic de partment of the farm is agreed upon at previous meeting and is di:oussed over the tea and knitting work. Like good wives they allow their husbands to come in the evening, and girls, who expect to be far mers' wives some day, are wel :nine. The meetings are enjoyable and profitable. Thi is an institution that deserves to be estab lished in more States than Kansas. Wind Colic in Horses. 'The best and cheapest remedy that I liaave.ever known fur colic in horses, is to take a bench of cotton rags, put them into an old tin pan, and set them on fire a that they will smoke but not blaze. Hold it near the horse's nose, so he will draw the smoke into his nostrils. Do this for about fifteen minutes; the nose will sweat, the wind pass off, the horse will shake %timself, and maybe lie down and roll. and will eat his mess all right. Many who have tried it can testify to this.- -COMMCM health. Court Affairs. ‘,Z 11 EMI VS SALES. k../ By virulent - sundry writs ofFi.Fa. Vend. Ear. $ t L2V. NATURE'S GREAT REMEDY FOR TIIE THROAT AND LUNGS, it is gratifying to us to inform the public that Dr. L. Q. C. Wishart's Pine Tree Tar Cordial, for Throat and Lung Diseases, has gained an enria- ble reputation from the Atlantic to the ralific coast, and from thence to some of the first frmi ics Europe, not'through the press alone, but by per• sons throughout the States actually benefiitted and cured at his office. While be publishes less, so say oar reporters, he is unable to supbly the de• mand. It gains and bolds its reputation— First. Not by stopping cough, but by loosening and assisting nature to throw off the unhealthy matter collected about the throat and bronchial tubes, which cameo irritation. Second. it removes the cause of irritation (which produces cough) of the mucous membrane and bronchial tubes, assists the lungs to act and throw off the unhealthy semtions, and purifies the blood. Third. It is free from squills, lobelia, ipecac and opium, of which most throat and lung rome- dies are composed, which allay cough only, and disorganize the stomach. It has a soothing effect on the stomach, acts on the liver and kidneys, and lymphatic and nervous regions, thus reaching to every part of the system. and in its invigorating and purifying effects it has gained a reputation which it meet hold above all others in the market. The arrangement of the Agraffe, the manner of string;ng, the peculiar form and arrangement of the Iron Frame SUPERCEDES ALL OTHERS. The use of a bar (which is a part of the Iron Frame on a line with the heavy steel stringing,) gives GREAT STRENGTH where most needed, and in this respect all other pianoes fail. The construction of the WREST PLANK, into which the tuning Pins are inserted, is such that it is impossible for the pins to come loosened, or the Wrest Plank itself to split, as is too often the case in other Piano-Fortes. The Extraordinary Evenness throughout the scale, the excellent Singing Quali- ity, the LENGTH AND PURITY OF VIBRATION, all go to prove what we claim, vie : that the AMON PIANO-FORTE Is the Best Instrument Manufactured.
