shiftlessness; but'Miry she thought he
was a genius, an' she got it sot in her
mind that be was goin' to be Presi
dent o' the 'United States, or some
sieh. •
"Wal old Black Hess he wa'n't none
too polite to Miry's beaux in gineral,
but when Elderkin came to see her ho
was swirlier than a saw; he hadn't a
good word for him noways; an' he'd
rake up the fire right afore his face
and eyed, and rattle about fastening
up'tho' windows, and tramp up to bed
and call 'down the chamber-stairs to
Miry to go to bed, an' was a sort o'
aggravatin every way.
"Wal, of folks want to get a gal set
on havia' a man, that's the way to go
to work. Miry bad a consid'able stiff
will of her own, and of she didn't care
about Tom Beacon before, she hated
him now; and of she liked Bill Elder
kin before, she was clean gone over to
him now; so ho took to goin' to
Wednesday evening lectures, and the
Friday evenin' prayermeetins', and
the singin'.school, jest as regular as a
clock, and so did he; and afterwards
they always walked home the longest
way. Fathers may jest as well let
their gals be courted in the house Pea
ceable, 'cause if they can't be courted
there, they'll find places where they

Old Johnny McGill resided, during
the war, in East Tennessee. Guerril

Yankees. As all guerillas dressed

the crowd. At last he was overtaken
by a party whose politics he couldn't
oven gess at, and the following dist
logue enSued:
"Sir, aro you a Union man ?"
"No air," responded McGill,
"Aro you a rebel then ?"
"NO Sir, I am not, a rebel either."
"Thenwhat in the devil's:name, aro
you?" roared the captain.
"Well, sir," hesitated McGill,"to tell
the real truth, ram nothing and
but d—d littlo of that !"
